I cannot hear you over the sound of Yakuza and Valkyria Chronicles.

^ Agreed on VC, never played Yakuza. Damn shame that Valkyria Chronicles 3 is Japan-only, I thought it made the transition to PSP fantastically in VC2. @_@

Anyway, according to this, Nintendo has confirmed that the reasoning for the eShop restriction is indeed due to the (draconian) German laws since that's where they're based: http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/a...erman-law.aspx

It's just ridiculous... They really need to come up with a better solution to this. Why can't they just block German IPs from using the eShop outside of the four-hour time period instead of making everyone else suffer?

The move to PSP wasn't good for VC in western countries. Amazed VC2 escaped japan. The Yakuza games are awesome, RPGs with a Shenmue like battle system. If you got a PS3 look into getting Yakuza 3 (1/2 PS2 games).

Nintendo's servers are in Germany as well as their HQ's (been there for two decades) and that seems to be the problem. Nintendo didn't really knew such laws would've come up when they first set up shop in Germany.

The solution is to set up servers elsewhere in EU.

You mean like what they're doing right now:

Sega is suing Level-5 over its touchscreen controls in Inazuma Eleven

Sega is suing Professor Layton publisher Level-5 for its use of a mechanic where players control characters via "a finger or pen" in its anime-inspired footy series Inazuma Eleven.

This of course sounds ridiculous as most DS games use the touchscreen in this regard, but according to Japanese publication Yomiuri Online (via Kotaku), Sega claims that Level-5 violated two patents.

It's unclear exactly what these patents entail, but Sega is seeking to cease sales of all eight Inazuma Eleven games and has requested Level-5 pay ¥900 million (£6.8 million) in damages.
Wow... what's going on at SEGA?

              EDIT: Picture of the patents

...the fuck is wrong with Sega?

Judging the picture, it's as-if they're trying to patent a human being's hand and finger movements. At this rate, it's only a matter of time before some faceless corporation tries to patent the human race.

I love the part where SEGA is suing LEVEL-5 over a patent they submitted for approval several years after the first of Inuzuma Eleven games came out ...

Good going, SEGA. Stay classy. Stay fresh.

Every digital provider for games on the net has this solution via blocking content until a certain time using the IP of the German consumers.
Blocking the whole of Europe is lazy and pathetic. They could easily throw in a measure to match German IP to set a restricted time since that is a law in Germany, but being elsewhere in Europe it is not, so we shouldn't have to abide by this absurd law.

EDIT: Oh and to add salt to the wound, everywhere in Europe has 4 hours to purchase content, Germany has 6. What kind of backwards implementation is that?

Spoke to a work friend who is german, asking about the censorship, she said for normal TV 'adult' content is blocked until late, but that any system that has a PIN number system can be shown during day and just blocked until PIN entered. She doesn't unerstand why such a system wouldn't be used, or why German laws are applying to the rest of Europe, since apparently German companies can sell/distribute/broadcast content banned in Germany freely in other countries (where it is allowed).

Seems like Nintendo may have just gone for a blanket decision based on german only restrictions.

Also, lawl at SEGA, patent on a way to play games? Sod off.

Speaking about patents and staying classy:

Sony patents tech to block used games

Sony has researched and patented new technology that could be implemented to block used games. As spotted by a NeoGAF user, patent application number 20130007892 for an "Electronic Content Processing System" and "Use Apparatus" would associate individual game discs with matched user accounts.
                        Madness...

So, they're trying to make sure the PS4 bombs? 'Cos given the choice between a console that can play second hand games and one that can't, guess which one a lot of folks will buy? And developers are unlikely to go, 'well, we'll get only a fraction of the sales we'd see on the PS4 compared to the 720, since there are about 10 720's to each PS4 out there, but at least no one will buy it from anyone other than us! Totally worth it!'

Of course that's assuming that Sony actually plans to use this. And that it's legally allowed to stop reselling in this fashion in every market it intends to sell in, not something I'm sure of.

But yeah, it's about as sane as the 720 will be 'download only' with no disc games.

Seriously, if either of them do it I'll just go buy a WiiU and fuck 'em both.

It will also kill the rental market, do they think it would make enough money without that? Or is the whole digital stream plan coming along faster than I thought.... can't trade-in without a disc which is what they hate apparently. Also, what is Sega even trying to patent there... how people use their fingers?

'Crysis 3' not coming to Wii U due to a lack of a "business drive"

Crysis 3 won't receive a Wii U version, it has been confirmed.

Despite being a "possibility" last year, CEO and founder of Crytek Cevat Yerli said "there is no Wii U version" due to a lack of "business drive" between publisher EA and Nintendo.

"There has been discussions between Nintendo and EA and Crytek, but the bottom line is that there is that there's not enough business drive in it," he told Digital Spy.
I read this as 'Crysis 3' not coming to Wii U due to lack of Nintendo being EA's prison bitch regarding their online system. Seriously, EA needs to get the fuck over themselves and quit being whiny because Nintendo turned down their outright absurd offer to help with their online component... on the condition that it run Origin, and that EA completely, 100% owned every portion of their online system.

EA are not fanboys or butthurt children and they don't play in this silly console war crap. CoD, the biggest game series for the last 6 years has sold like crap on WiiU. What on earth makes you think releasing Crysis 3 on WiiU is going to make any money when Crysis 2 had mediocre sales even on PS3/360?

                                Is just basic business.
