I miss the diversity of games that we used to have...
A problem with modern games vs older games is that modern games try so hard to define themselves as a specific type of game (*Genre*, *game mechanic*, *target audience*). I don't think anyone considered Capcom's license games during the 8-bit and 16-bit era as "Games for children", but now ... I think pretty much only the LEGO games and the Mario franchise has managed to dodge the bullet of a serious kiddie label. (There are of course those who firmly believes a "mature" game is one where you have the camera rammed up the hairy arse of a bloke shouting FUCK, SHIT, and DAMN every half-a-second whilst spooning beefcakes and painting the walls red with blood... I tend to compare such forms for entertainment to drawing cocks with phonenumbers next to the walls of public bathrooms. Childish, immature, but under the right circumstances; amazingly hilarious.)
ok lets talk about football or soccer. i remember playing different titles eg pes, fifa, this is football etc but now i jus think ppl play fifa only
PES and FIFA are both rocking it out. Although, over the past half-a-decade or so, FIFA completely stole the thunder from PES. Whilst PES still delivers a pretty nice arcade feeling, FIFA offers simulation of pretty much everything football (+Ultimate Team ). It was a strange day for me when people in the old office started playing glitchy FIFA builds during their breaks instead of PES. This is Football wasn't really that good, it only lived off of the short glory of being the first mocapped soccer game (iirc). No clue how UbiSoft's Pure Football was, but EA's at least still shifting copies of their fourth FIFA Street (which isn't exactly "new" anymore) and FIFA 14 is already, before even its proper reveal, likely to become the biggest sports beast yet
It's a different world. It's impossible to ever go back into that era where there was barely any kind of online console service and developers had to work with that in mind, no patches and DLC. Add to this the new age of "Oh look, Call of Duty sold X copies, so why can't we have the same, even when the audiences and reasons it's sells like that are totally unrelated derp!!" which builds on the wrong trends like casual gamer focus and co-op for the sake of it. Without this, things were actually better in some ways and it's not really nostalgia because these are pretty clear factors. I am not saying everything is terrible or even that there is less variety, and I have a lot of favourites from this generation of consoles, but it is a real thing happening and it's only going to increase.
This is why I haven't bought a new game in ages. I too grew up with a sega mega drive, n64, ps1, and ps2. Remember games like Dynamite Heddy, mission impossible 64, Goldeneye, sonic the hedgehog, earth worm jim, terminator 2, perfect dark, banjo kazooie, shadows of the empire; the first star wars game to simulate the battle of hoth, syphon filter, resident evil, silent hill, gta, gran tourismo, final fantasy, tekken, dead or alive, silent hill, alone in the dark, metal grear solid, wwf smackdown, and a billion others. Even in the ps2's prime games were all different and diverse; devil may cry, code veronica, outbreak file 1 and 2, crazy taxi, sos final escape, silent hill, raw danger, gran tourismo, gta, red faction, deus ex, etc etc. The point is in those days you could spend all day playing different games with different challenges, and they felt like a different game. These days it's just corporate bullshit for sheep that want graphics and multiplayer. For one thing online gaming has ruined modern games in a lot of ways, and recent home gaming has also seen to the demise of video game arcades. It's a very boring world we live in now in terms of video games, but with the amount of people re buying retro consoles at the moment, I live in hope. For one thing the shop I went to had sold of out of ps1 memory cards!
