DDR3 is better for transferring smaller amounts of data.

    GDDR5 ranges between 256bit or 384bit bandwidth.
    DDR3 ranges between 64bit or 128bit.

GDDR5 is much faster, tearing DDR3 a new asshole and then some. The PS4 has lots of bandwidth but the CPU suffers due to GDDR5's latency... but this is somewhat negated by the fact that the PS4's CPU is clocked higher. Oh, and the little fact that CPUs require minimal latency because of multiple applications fighting for resources from available compute threads/cores - and multiple concurrent applications aren't likely to come into play with a console (except when you have three OS's running, like the XB1).
Whichever benefits you the most depends entirely on the structure of your game's access to RAM (and why it needs that RAM) - along with, of course, whatever the wiring's like.

OS side of the XB1 is something I wouldn't worry much about in terms of threads and what not. The 360 didn't exactly suffer from having a core dedicated to the OS and its media functions (mainly 'cause few human beings seems to know how to properly take advantage of multi-core CPUs within a game's environment, despite games these days consisting of a gazillion layers of applications XD)

The CPU of the XB1 could always be clocked up again. Assuming they deem it safe after more extensive endurance testing (and this can of course backfire the other way on Sony too, that they've accidentally clocked things too high; I mean, look at the compact size of that thing compared to the One -- heating could very well become an issue ;D)

The differences won't be apparent for another few years, but don't kid yourself by claiming there's little difference. Once developers wrap their heads around it, the XB1 is going to be eclipsed.
At launch, the RAM size is without a doubt more than anyone could need. Regardless of 7 or 5 GB. But once we step further, depending on how the XB1 i structured on the OS front and how it handles specific types of functionality on the resource front and what devs are allowed to do with them in terms of resources (the HDMI pass-through, snap aps such as Skype, etc.) the footprint of the OS could either be significantly decreased over time or devs could be allowed for games to disable specific OS features during gameplay (If you look at the current 360 Dash, only the Guide exists when you go into games, while in ye olde days, you had the full dashboard still running)

    • Really, all of that would fall under "optimization." Every console has epic potential and can make up for its shortcomings in other areas. But hardware/spec/numbers-wise, the XB1 ain't looking particularly spiffy at the moment. The differences won't shine for a while.

I wouldn't doubt the PS4's actual design and architecture, Japanese engineering innovation is a beast. It's one area they've always particularly excelled at and Sony is one of the main pioneers in that area. Fitting more into less isn't that much of a hefty task with the right people behind it. Of course being wary is fine too, and it's the reason I haven't pre-ordered lest another 360 RROD/PS2 dicky laser situation happen again.

If they really want to please people, they should probably show the Cloud in action rather than speaking of it like a myth. Right now it's all nothing but hot air.

Problem is that people are too fast with dismissing something based solely on numbers - Numbers without context are kinda pointless. ;D

Problem here right now is that this is Sony, the "masterminds" behind the hardware clusterfucks known as the PS2 and PS3 - the former not exactly being the greatest piece of engineering (+strangely gimped right before launch) and the latter which has a gazillion hardware revisions, where the failure rate hasn't exactly been pretty for the first generation ones AND, curiously enough, the recent Super Slims haven't exactly left a good taste in my mouth (I've actually never seen so many defective returns on a platform during its launch period as the Super Slim -and that's a hardware revision- anything from DREs to reproduceable shutdowns that are strangely enough not of heating origin ... not to mention the total fisherprice quality on the plastic too - just like that god awful gimped PSP Street)

Well, they've at least done a good job of talking up the concept, and you don't exactly have to be a tech genuis to get the benefits of it (in a scenario where it works). Titanfall and Forza 5 are clearly their benchmark games for demonstrating how this stuff will work, so we'll surely see more of as we get closer to launch. But then again, the "problem" with something like this is that it's not really anything to show. It's like saying "Show me physics calculations", "Now show me the same calculations done on the GPU!" -- you basically need to get a moment to touch it, I suppose. Besides, you can actually already see the cloud in action, although in a very limited manner. There's already a cellphone game that's been using it for a little while. Some tactical space sim for WP8, where the cloud calculates, generates and renders fancy FMV-like presentations of the outcome of your combat decisions/encounters.

        • i think its a stupid stretch to say if we're gonna see any actual difference in the future. where in the age of slow progression in graphics, and it'll get the point where not even the human eye can tell the difference. gameplay is going to be so fluid its like your just controlling an avatar. that's how ridiculous and real its going to get. people want gaming to be accepted as art, but art shouldnt always be based on realism, like cel-shading. if a game like GTAV can be created with its "supposed" massive scale size, and this is on a measly 512MB whether unified or split, then i'm calling a doubt that we'll even see games comes close to using 5GB [and dont say Killzone: Shadow Fall, i will stab you. i find that one a bogus example]. the only ones that "might" do it, are creation games like Minecraft where it would have render large of amounts of data in creative process.

          • I can't believe Microsoft actually went back on their word. I've got to admit I didn't like some of the things they were forcing users into, but I can't respect them as a company for coming into the market with a vision and then simply crumbling under the pressure. It's like Nintendo coming out and announcing the Wii and then six months before launch deciding not to use motion controls and use analogue controllers instead. I might not have liked how they presented it, and I might not have liked what it changed about my comfort zone when it comes to gaming, but Microsoft just lost their USP and I'm not sure if anyone will be better off for it, including them.

I imagine you would've said it was a stupid stretch last generation too.

              • Actually quite happy to see there were some games utilizing non-realistic rendering. (And last gen, I totally considered Wind Waker one of the most "realistic" games, thanks to Link's animation set, the way wind affects elements in the game world, the way fire effects were, etc.. The game world LOOKED alive in the same way a real world should.)

Actually, while it's true that people have both grossly overestimated the capabilities of 3D consoles in the past (PS1 once being seen as realistic, PS2 being all "TOY STORY GRAPHICS REALTIME!!!" and so forth) and greatly undeerestimated them in terms of what they considered "mind blowing" at the start of a generation, we are actually at a state in 3D production now where 3D assets for many years have been possible to create in extremely realistic detail, rigged for facial- and mocap, 3D scanned from objects, etc.. But to use most of that crap in realtime on consumer friendly hardware requires way too much time and resources to properly rig them for all sorts of stuff and optimize and QA it that we now are at a stage where even on current gen consoles; the "HD Assets" are an economical hurdle in terms of production and also a major contributing reason to why a flopping AAA title is a major, studio killing disaster.

                  • Just saw this, found it an interesting read.

                    Sony +1
                    Microsoft -1

                    • According to that guy the family sharing was on a time limit of 15 minutes to an hour. Was MS bending the facts there then?

                        • I'm sorry they changed it now, the uproar and backlash on release when people realised would have been great. From both people who bought one.

it was actually far less serious for me, if at all at the beginning, until the internet decided to suck me in me in a different way...

Imagine the pure chaos during the release when everyone tried to play their games at the same time, making Microsoft's server crash. It'd have been so funny.
