Ok, IGN says it wont be out for a year or so.
But, another question remains: how will it be? 2D or 3D?
Would Capcom try to keep it as close to the original as possible and make it 2D? Or will make the next step to 3D. (SF EX doesnt really count, 3D graphics with 2D gameplay).
Would Capcom try to please the old fanbase or try to get new fans?
Either way, seeing how Capcom does things lately, 2D or 3D will rock.
I personally would prefer 3D but I'll love it anyway.

It's a Capcom USA effort btw (IP is theirs now, and has been for 3 years). Not to mention that the guys that really made Capcom's fighters what they are have left the company a while ago, so I'm not too excited.

Niko, comparing DS and SF is like comparing Navel and Valencia oranges. DS existed because of SF's success and was based on SFII's engine. It was obviously an effort to do another big splash like SFII but it never took off.

It added chain combos (cheesy concept that Alpha 1 borrowed and then dropped), air blocking and crouch stepping as brand new features with the first game. The engine and other features were SF derivatives for the most part, so it's really no wonder that it never took off. That and the character designs didn't have the mainstream western appeal. R&D1 concentrated on SF, and the games after Alpha 1 showed it. The progress of DS as it evolved and ended as a trilogy was because of the developers' experience with SF. Naturally being a younger series, it benefited. They tried to be more creative with ES and EX specials.

Capcom didn't even start making significant changes to the SF engine until SSFII Turbo (after 4 games). Then they obviously went on a roll with several games until 1999.

It's not a case of a mainstream series overcoming a "superior" one (an example of that is MK Vs SF). SF's popularity started going down in 95 anyway; even SFIII couldn't really revive the series.

*Counts.* True. I'ts my fourth wedding anniversary in a couple of weeks, so it must have been some time before that. Maybe five or six years ago. It was back when we had all the fun of REE, though, and were hosted on Gamespy. I was head mod/writter, which was fun.

I know, I was a site admin at the time, though it went down before I got the chance to really put up anything or do much with the site. That is, besides kick REEtards in the nuts and get yelled at by both parties for it, only to apologize later for realizing how stupid they were to sabotage THIA for that. And before that, I was a mod. There wasn’t much time of my seven years of being on THIA that I was only a member!

Some minor details. It's handed over to Capcom Japan.. who in turn outsourced the game to Dimps (Budokai developer).

Between this and the Basara fighter, Capcom's management have lost their minds.

I was thinking about this. What games are Capcom actually developing? Resident Evil 5? Everything else seems to be outsourced.

Every console game basically, not including ports. If a game is multiplatform like DMC4, one team handles it. Ports like LP for PS3 is probably outsourced.

Outsourcing isn't typically noted, but when it is, you know that they're not heavily involved with the project.

What about Umbrella Chronicles? That was developed by cavia inc, not Capcom. I just find it so confusing. I mean, Bionic Commando is being done by GRiN, and Street Fighter 4 is being made by someone else.

I mean the outsourcing never works. CiRCLE Studios did a terrible job of Without Warning, Beatdown was another terrible game by cavia, the list could just be going on.

Seems that internal studios are handling high budget titles that require the use of Framework (since it's an in-house engine).

I wouldn't say that outsourcing never works. Nextech did a fantastic job with all versions of CV (and GS2). Don't remember who handled Zero mainly, but it wasn't Capcom's internal studios either.

Yes but we can all agree that GS2 and Zero weren't as "good" as the previous titles in the series, as well as CV being not liked by many either (though I personally enjoyed it).

So basically, RE5 and DMC4 are both using the MT Framework engine, so that's the only ones that Capcom are working on internally?
