I really like the game. The only things I don't like are two car chase sequences, and they are early on in the game. I haven't encountered any game breaking glitches though from what I hear I may be lucky, but honestly this game could've had a bit more quality assurance. =P
The graphics are very good, but some areas look really bad. I don't understand why with next gen games these days that so many of them have some REALLY NICE looking areas and then some really horrible looking areas. It's just disappointing because it's not consistent all.
The gameplay is pretty good. There is a lot of things you can do though I haven't tried to "push" the engine to it's limits, if you understand what I'm saying. Mind you, the engine that Eden have built for fire is great and it's something I wouldn't mind seeing implemented in more games themselves. The ability to close your eyes and hone in on an enemy's weakpoint is brilliant - truly emphasises the horror aspect of the game - having to give up something important to get an edge in battle.
Many people complain that they have no items but a lot of those people are playing it like an action game. JUST BECAUSE IT LOOKS LIKE GEARS OF WAR DOES NOT MEAN YOU PLAY IT LIKE IT. I'm being awfully conservative and haven't run into any inventory related problems. AS for the combat, it has a lot of work that needs to be done, but it works enough. Sometimes it is frustrating, and I've NEVER liked dual stick combat (Death by Degrees and Too Human come to mind) but it does work. The ability to burn, smash or simply walk through a door is a nice touch too. =D
As said before, the driving is terrible. It's weird since Eden developed Test Drive Unlimited which I recall many people saying was a brilliant driving based game. How could they fuck it up?
The soundtrack is nothing short of brilliant. Very nice style of music and suits the atmosphere and setting of the game very well. The ambient pieces really set the mood, one time I actually got up and turned the light on because I was getting too nervous (I do let myself get into these things too much, though >_>)
The presentation is magnificent - the way the game is divided into episodes AND the way things just happen in-game really impressed me. It's all very cinematic and suits the "TV Show" archetype the game is going by. The recap along with the "Previously on Alone in the Dark" is a nice refresher whenever you leave the game for extended periods of time and come back to it. Running through Central Park with a critical wound, checking car glove boxes for a bandage to heal is something that is done really well -the music ups the ante as you run breaking windows, getting into cars and just pillaging for whatever you can find. It's really well put together
And for the record, it IS a direct continuation of the story. Although set in an entirely different time era, Edward's presence is explained and there are several key events mentioned, including the Derceto mansion incident (AitD 1).
I would give it an 8/10 but the driving segments really drag the game down to a 7.
My biggest gripe though is that in many screenshots and even the final box art, Edward Carnby looks like this: -
whereas in the game itself, he looks like this: -
I am definitely too picky, but I hate the older looking Carnby. And the inconsistency from an artistic point of view.Last edited by James; 07-14-2008, 01:07 PM.

Viva Pinata got really tedious to play especially since it has no real ending you can play for months on end and just have a really fancy garden. Once you get all the achievements there's really not much else you can do to have fun unless you like virtual gardening and pet keeping/breeding.
Alone in the Dark definitely has more action and horror than VP ever could
If both games are your cup of tea, then I'd recommend buying Viva Pinata since it will definitely last you a while and renting Alone in the Dark since you can get that done with in less than a day...
