Xbox 360 or PS3? *flinch*

Buy a 360. You might not be able to mod a new hard drive onto it or install Linux, but I really doubt you wanted to do that in the first place. If all you want your gaming system for is to play games, there really isn't two ways about it, either you want the games for the 360 or the PS3 and if you wanted my opinion (which this is an open invitation for), the 360 has more games worth playing. Not to say games on the PS3 are not worth playing, simply that the 360 has more, and a pretty good variety at that. However, where this comparison fails pecifically is on platformers, so if you want some nice platformers to play, as opposed to rpg's or action games, you should probably look at a PS3.

Achievements, Xbox Live, and other controversial issues aside, I think time and time again this generation has shown that the 360 is generally the preferred console for developers and purchasing one will guarantee a substantial amount of new third party material in the future. The PS3 certainly has an impressive breadth in this area but it always feels like it is playing catch up and their arcade library is meager in comparison.

Those are my feelings as a gamer, but if you are a hardware enthusiast it would be pretty hard to deny that the PS3 is a much more open platform. Good luck with whatever you choose.

I thought I'd ask this question here. I want to connect my PS3 to my lap top, so I can try playing online.

Do I need a straight-through or a crossover cable? Sorry, I'm a complete noob when it comes to this sort of stuff.

If you are planning to do an ICS connection with your laptop, then you'd need a cross-over cable, when you're connecting to a router/switch, you'd use a regular patch cable.

For Vista, however, I think you will have to go to the sharing tab instead of the advanced tab when you are browsing the properties of a connection...

1. Get a CAT5 or CAT6 crossover cable. The cable that came with the PS3 is a normal Ethernet cable, therefore it cannot be used for this operation.

2. Make sure you have two sources for network communication. For example, you can have 2 ethernet ports on your computer, or you can have a wireless card and a Ethernet port etc. It helps to draw out a connection blueprint such as this:

DSL Modem > CAT5 cable > Network Card 1 > Computer > Network Card 2 > CAT5 Crossover cable > PS3

3. Connect your computer to the modem and verify that you have an Internet connection. Then, click on Start, go to settings, control panel. Double click on Network Connections, and identify the connection to your modem (Network card 1).

4. Right click on the modem connection, and choose properties. Next, click on the advanced tab (Sharing tab for Vista users), and check the “allow other users to connect…” checkbox. After the checkbox is checked, click on the “Home networking connection” drop down box and select the name of the second network connection. Click OK and exit the properties window.

5. Finally, connect the CAT5 crossover cable from the second network adapter of the computer to the PS3, and voila, your Internet connection is now routed to your PS3. Please be aware that your computer must be on in order for your PS3 to stay online. In the long run, a router may be a much better device to use than your computer, since it consumes only a fraction of the electricity than your computer does.

WOW. I haven't checked in to this thread in a while. I'm amazed at how many replies it's gotten, I had no idea that people felt this strongly about their consoles.

That's the reason for the *flinch* I guess.

After reading through some of the posts here, I'm starting to think about the PS3, mostly for the games it has. I don't really like Halo all that much, and Dead Rising's coming to Wii, so the two largest 360 titles I've seen don't interest me. And from what I've read, PS3 has way less problems to contend with, especially regarding the fact that there's a thread titled "Xbox 360 is an unreliable piece of shit". PS3 will take a larger chunk out of my wallet, but I'm considering it to be the better purchase at the moment.
