You need to watch that film. Also, just send it back to Sony and see what they can do with it. Chances are you'll get away scot-free, and earn yourself a brand new console if they can't fix it. Nothing to lose by trying.

I know. My second one has given me no problems.
However, I have been talking to the folk in the shops here and apparently a lot of the 40 and 60 gig models have started failing now. The 60 gig is having a disc drive failure (which looks like what hit me) and the 40 gig is having some other issues.
So...while not nearly as bad as the 360 the PS3's aren't as tough either, it appears.
Only Wii shall survive in an urban brawl!

We'll surely be seeing more and more reports of this coming now. I've already noticed an increase in forum topics about the issue in various corners of the web.
Not sure if anyone's nailed the source of this problem yet, but I guess a good blind guess theory could be:
A cheap drive, maybe mixed with way too early adoption of a new format... Or maybe it's some odd thing that happens through heat? (heating of some substance, maybe the protective layer of some BR discs, creating a "mist"-like substance of some sort that ends up sticking itself to nice surfaces, such as the lens, maybe?)

My PS3 (60 gig) has never given me any problems. They should've just kept that model on the market.

Oddly, the only time I had a problem with my Wii is when my daughter fed it some pennies. Once I got the disc that was now destroyed out along with the pennies it worked perfectly.
Still, my PS3 has given me few problems since I got the new one. Only the odd crash or glitch. As has the new 360. The Wii is simply the only one never to give me any problems that weren't caused by pennies.
