Could I, for instance, play a USA Sony PS3 game on a Japanese Sony PS3 system?
yes , i have a Japanese PS3 and i played on it European/Japanese/USA games without any problems at all , however you can't play USA PS2/1 games on a Japanese PS3, you can only play J games on a J system and US games on US system.
