  • Name Changes

What are your opinions on people who legally change their name to that of either a video game or fictional character?

In my opinion, that's a whole other level of fandom, one I'm currently not all that comfortable with entering yet or at all. Needless to say, there are those who will either change their first name or full name to that of their favorite character. I've known of two people that have legally changed their name to that of a video game character. One was a high school bud of mine by the name of Stacey Chandler; she changed her name to "Claire" after being inspired by none other than Claire Redfield. The other person I know changed his name to Cid after playing FF7 because he looks just like him (perpetual cigarette in mouth and everything).

    Weird? Yes. Fanatical? Definitely.

Baffaling is all I can say.
People have freedom of will, so I won't judge them, but why is my quesiton.
You could say an utter burst of fandom, but what then? Fandom lasts for so long and it dies off, hence why people start to like other bands, hence why people go from one series to another, everyone has different times, but what happens when it ends?
Your just gonna keep the same fan name until you change it again?
I just find it oddly silly, I see no point in it.

Honestly? I can live with this level of bizarre. It's Otakukin, the guys who believe they really are video game and anime characters that make me stop and wonder what happened to the worlds sanity supply. I mean, I read a blog of this guy talking about how he believed he was Ken, the Digimon Emperor, and that he was simply unlucky to be born in a dimension without Digimon.

        It was...sorta creepy.

Ever run into a cosplayer that WAS the character they were cosplaying? Now that is creepy.

You guys are harsh. I know I'm not the only one here who seriously thought of legally changing their name to "L-Block."

              That would be funny.
"Do you L-Block, take I-Block, to be your block for eternity?"

I have to admit though, that would be pretty bad-ass to see someone's driver's license that reads "Cloud Strife."

My dog, Franklin, had his right eye torn out by another of my dogs (boxer-pit)...

I've since called him Frank XIII (in reference to Red XIII/FF7), and he responds to it.

                  Yeah.
                  I'm a blackstar.

That's pretty bad ass. I named an old cat I had because it had one working eye and was always squinting "Nanaki" because of Red XIII too.

Redfield would be a pretty cool name for a Golden Retriever, I feel.

                        ...or a Pug named Wesker!

I once met a friend of a friend in the streets only to find out that this guy had changed his forename to Sephiroth! I turned and said to him: "Obviously your favourite game is Final Fantasy VII." He replies: "No, actually it's Kingdom Hearts II." The funny thing is that this happened on "Mother"s day.

If people legally change their name... Please change it to something original (and most important; Somehow Fitting/Suitable. As that's one of the important factors if you're gonna take a name that is "inspired" or straight out plagiarized from somewhere/someone else and expect the world to take you seriously for it and actually respect it) and, of course, they better be prepared to face the fact that some people will still use their old name (or some other nickname).

A name is a very personal thing, and the decision to change it shouldn't just be the product of 5 minutes of crappy digital entertainment, a little boredom and filling out some paperwork.

A guy I know changed his name to Vincent at some point. I still call him something completely different and some other people still use his old name. In fact, I guess he knew what he was in for and it's probably more of an artist's name for him (the new one), I guess.

                            As a sidenote;
I hate the thought of standing in a room with people that most of all look like they escaped from a forum or MMO. Everyone being named shit like "Aurons Sephiroht X_1989".

we do have the will to do as we please, but we're never in charge of what we named ourselves, our parents did that for us.

i think it'd be annoying if people did use names like what carnivol said. but what about the people with.. horrible names? i knew a girl in highschool named smelly, and a guy named dykshot (dickshot)

                              i wouldn't want those names

my name's shivana, at first i didn't like it because i'd have to spell for people
