I suppose it wasn't too bad, but one moment sticks out clearly in my mind: When Claire walks into the S.T.A.R.S. Office and exclaims, "LEON!" The delivery on that line shatters my ear drums and my sanity.
Her voice actress did a pretty good job throughout the rest of the game, though.

I want to hear that "Leon" part again

Actually, no, it's not worse. It's a lot more professional to do it that way, and it's a lot less noticeable than pixelating would be.
They did it in RE3 also, for the odd backgrounds that weren't upscaled. Because RE3's backgrounds were only upscaled half the time.
Basically, you know how the intro looks in RE3, the one where Jill goes on, "It all began as an ordinary day in september..." That's how the backrounds in RE2 are. That's filtered.

Well, some of RE3's backgrounds weren't upscaled, some were. Like... If you play the PC version (the older PC version at least) at 640x480 resolution, you'll see which backtrounds were pixelated or not. Those that ARE pixelated were filtered in the GC version. But yeah, it doesn't horribly clash, it just doesn't look as good as those that were upscaled in RE3. Like, if the bar was pixelated in RE3, you simply wouldn't be able to see that, "This too shall pass" scratched in wood above the door, but it wouldn't horribly clash.
