...Silent Hill's pretty much always done it though. Sometimes the camera will be forced into an interesting shot but the majority of the game has it over the shoulder. RE4's only real addition on top of what Silent Hill did was giving you the chance to futher aim the weapon. And I personally find Silent Hill a lot scarier than Resident Evil.

I can play with the tank controls as well as any. But I find the RE4 system much smoother and more pleasant to play. Of course, I never felt like I was playing a movie. I always wanted to feel like I was there, and I never really could when I knew the character could see stuff I couldn't.

Personally, I don't see how the camera angle should really effect the scares of a game. If you're relying on forcing someone to not notice a monster by putting the camera at an akward angle then you're doing it wrong, in my opinion. And I can't think of a single scare you can't pull off some other way. For example, a neat little alcove can contain an undead creature you can't easily or quickly.

What I want to see... Dammit... Is Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare, for PS2. I mean, they were working on it, then they cancel it? It could've looked great on the PS2, like it did on the PC. But I'm not a PC gamer, and all I have to me is the PS1 version, which looks great for a PS1 game, but upscaled, it could be so much more.

Actually, no, the camera usually follows behind the character somewhat, but it's not attached to the shoulder. The character was, first of all, usually a good distance away from it, so much so that you could see the character in full height. And secondly, if you turned the character around, the camera wouldn't follow. And I'm not gonna spend my time trying to figure out why one is more effective than the other, but the bottom line is, neither RE4, Dead Space or Silent Hill: Homecoming gave me very many scares, if any at all. But even as recent as Silent Hill Origins, which didn't have tank controls, yet still, the camera stayed as independent as it has always been in Silent Hill, Origins gave me some pretty good scares and creeped the hell out of me at certain parts.

And yeah, one of the reasons I fell in love with RE is because it looked like you were playing a movie, with the dramatic camera angles. If you want to feel like you're there, you might as well be playing a first person shooter.

...oddly enough, they did make it for PS2. It seems to be a Europe only thing, however. I actually own a copy.

Yeah, I saw the European version for sale once. Can't play it though. And either way, it's still rare as hell, as far as I've seen.

Really? I got mine in a 'Buy four for £10' sale a few years ago at GameStation. Should have picked up more copies, I guess. Mind, I've never actually gotten around to beating the one I own.

Well, I've only seen one copy on eBay, once. Ah well, I'll see if I can acquire the PC version, I guess, to get the most out of it.
But Alone in the Dark is an example, where I can see how someone can get frustrated with tank controls. Because they were sluggish. I can deal with it, but yes, it is a bit frustrating. The thing about Resident Evil is/was, that they perfected the tank controls from the start. Even in RE1, despite the tank controls, the characters moved fast and the controls were extremely responsive. If anyone nailed the tank controls, it's Capcom. So it's a damn shame to see the one game that did it 100% right, getting rid of it.

But RE4 still has tank controls. You want to move forward - push up, want to move back - push down, to turn left or right you push left or right on your d-pad. But thanks to camera that is always in the same place it is now more intuitive.

To be honest I've never understood why so many reviewers would complain about tank controls in every RE game. I never had problem with it and to be honest, I prefer it over 3D controls (tried it in SH3 and quickly switched back to 2D controls).

                          A DS-remake of Resident Evil 1.5.

                          A REmake of RE3.

A remake of the Megaman games similar to powered up.

                          A remake of Majora's mask.

                          A Dino Crisis REmake.

That may be true. But the camera angles are the only other part of that. I loved the dramatic camera angles, they gave the game so much more atmosphere. Like the odd time you're walking in a hallway, and your view is from the outside into the window, makes it seem like someone's watching you. Creepily awesome.

Well, now, there's an interesting thought. That game was pretty bad-ass, before they went into space in the 2nd one, which was pretty lame. The original was pretty sweet...gunning down velociraptors and the occasional run-in with that big-ass t-rex. I feel like Dino Crisis reimagined on current-gen consoles could be spectacular.

I don't know... I think Dino Crisis remake would be somewhat unnecessary. Now, a decent sequel, that would be nice. Something that picks up where Dino Crisis 2 actually left off. With Regina going back to save Dillain, or something of the sort.
