  • The Survival Guide (Now flushed - Read #1 and #3 before posting)

Looking for survival horror games? Let's try to make a list of the "alternatives" here! And by all means post missing titles to get them added to the list!

It's actually always been "in the papers" to do some features on other games than the Resident Evil franchise, but we're kinda working a bit on and off on a lot of stuff, so I figured we could at least put up a little sticky here where we can list games. I hope my fellow moderators can help edit/add titles in the main post(s) here too. And also evt. do some purges every now and then to clean away your title submissions

Just look at the already entered titles for information on how we'd like to "keep things. For now, at least".

If you want a quick "introduction" on how I'd love it if you could list your titles, keep on reading, (and feel free to suggest a better format, but stick with this one as long as we use it and then evt. shift if this topic and the list changes to reflect a new format):

    Game Title - Genre - Original Release Date - Developer/Publisher - Platforms

Game titles preferably written out with "Nice Use of the Caps, The"
(notice how words such as "of" and "the" should not have uppercase first letter if used in the middle. And how the "The" is put at the end after a comma.)

Developers/Publishers just seperated by /, basically anything to just identify the origin of the game.

Original Release Date is pretty self-explanatory.
I'm not a fan of the whole "MM-DD-YYYY" format, as various countries list those in different orders and sometimes with only YY and not YYYY, so we'll use DD-MMM-YYYY, where MMM is the 3 letter capitalized short for the release month. If a game was unreleased, don't enter a release date. If a game was planned, but canceled, for a specific platform, add the "Unreleased" as a () note after the platform name in the platform section.

Genre might seem a bit odd to have.
Basically, it refers to what type of game it is. A game like Resident Evil is Survival Horror, but some games might fit with a better description, but yet somehow belong in the horror genre.

Platforms is something we'd like to spell out, with the use of comma to seperate them. So you pretty much write: Nintendo DS, Nintendo Wii, Sony PlayStation, Microsoft Xbox 360, Windows XP/Vista, MS-DOS 6.22, etc... (OS for computers, preferably).

Also, in the case of missing information, use question marks (?). A full sample line of missing info would be: Game Title - ???/??? - ??-???-???? - ???

If you have additional notes to a title, do a new line and use a "-". Additional notes should be things worth taking note of in the game.
(Short description of the game and/or its main features. Game ID codes can also go here, if possible, even though some games might not have proper IDs 'cause of their platform of choice and weird publishing/distribution methods. International names is also a thing you can put here. Note: Resident Evil will be an exclusion to the rule of using original names for the main listing. So no BioHazard entries labeled entries, even in the odd case of titles with possibly no international release. But the use of the release date of the initial release will still be used, if Japan got it first. You may translate subtitles for games, as long as the translation is commonly used and you provide the original name as an additional note.)

Hoping to expand this thing later. Also, I'm hoping we'll see some oddities pop up here.

      Okay! Let's try this again.

Added some stuff to the list, flushed all posts.

From now on - Not obeying the format samples seen on the list will be an infraction worthy offense of a wooping 1 point pr. post.
Especially note the DATE format, as there are different date formats around the world we're using DD/MMM/YYYY, where month is written out in a 3 letter abbreviation. Also, only the initial release date is needed. Not regional ones (but feel free to add them to the notes)

Anyway, feel free to make additional notes for already existing entries and suggest additional titles to be added (as this is far from a complete list). Also, try to make your post include a description of the game somehow. As there'll probably be some games no one's ever heard of or that just don't quite fit the tab of being a traditional survival horror game.

I'd consider Dino Crisis 2 an Action Horror game.

Ammo isn't really a problem and health can be bought. You can run while shooting. Enemies constantly respawn. Theres also fps segments where you shoot at dinosaurs while on a speeding vehicle.

Oh god, when you said "Now flushed" I thought you meant you'd dumped everything everyone did and that huge list I had would be gone. I almost had a heart attack.

Well, I'll let you know if I can find any more games.

Edit: My friend just reminded me of a fantastic horror game, actually.

XD I had a similar feeling of dread to Canas until I checked the thread.
Anyway, just thought I'd put these in as I've been following a few of these games (and their later novelizations and the like).

Anyway a little bit of information on these ones I'm posting now, these ones all play like visual novels (and in some forms, murder mysteries) but when you get further into the games, you can see that they're actually psychological horror/mystery/thrillers (Umineko no Naku Koro ni also delves into fantasy). There are differences with the main titles as they're considered the different story arcs but are essentially all part of the "When They Cry" series. Of course, the arcs will often show the plot through different perspectives but will always leave the player to guess what happens.

They also have novelizations, manga, anime and drama CD versions (and spin-offs) that generally focus on the horror factor of each game.

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni ( ひぐらしのなく頃に ) series, "When the Cicadas Cry":
            Spoiler:

Umineko no Naku Koro ni ( うみねこのなく頃に ) series, "When the Seagulls Cry":

Ahah. Nah. I just flushed the countless posts of the "I'VE HEARD STORKUKIANUS IS A GREAT GAME! WHY IS NOT LIST?" caliber.

Also, damn... there's a whole lot of Higurashi and Umineko games... guess I'll use the SPOILER tag to group them. Thanks for grouping them in spoiler tags

I'll update the main list soon. (And, yeah, I skipped a few games from the old posts. Mostly 'cause I couldn't find any proper info on them and people just name dropped them with no additional info provided and no respect paid to the formats)

Also, speaking of Higurashi and Umineko. I've yet to see the anime adaption of Umineko, but I seriously hated Season 2 + the OVAs of Higurashi (guess why!)

                True, thanks for that Carn.

Yeah, there's another one being released in Feb (or March) this year I believe but an exact date hasn't been given so I haven't listed it (nor the mobile ports by Cavia, as I can't remember which ones and their port release dates). Not a problem at all, figured spoiler tags would be the way to go to avoid any unnecessary page stretching lists.

Also, thank you for putting in that huge list I had posted in here before.

I recall seeing a little bit of it and it seems to be a little bit better than Higurashi (personally, the changes weren't to my liking and Umineko seems to be sticking to it a bit better from what I've been told). *Shrugs* It's probably because I tend to like Umineko's adaptions more than the Higurashi ones.

                  Lifeline - Survival Horror/Adventure - 02/Mar/2004 - Konami - Sony Playstation 2
                  -Japan version called "Operator's Side" - 30/Jan/2003
-Unique and innovative game, controlled by speaking commands into a USB headset.
-On screen heroine is seen in third person, while 'you' view security monitors.
-Set on a monster infested, space station hotel.
-Original Japan release came in 2 versions. One included a USB headset.

                  ^Did I do that right?
It's been years since I played Lifeline. But I remember I was surprised by how well the voice command controls worked. Yelling commands at an on screen character, with no other means of controlling their actions, sounds like an exercise in frustration but it wasn't too bad.

I've got a lot of other games to add to that list. I'll just need some time to track down their release details etc. And I'll wait for this "Update" to come, to see which ones are missing.

Looks about right. Only thing is that the release date in the headline should be for the game's initial release. Following release dates aren't really necessary, but of course welcome (so throw out the 2004 date there and move the Japanese into the header)

I'll see if I can move everything into the main list later tonight. Also, if the title hasn't been mentioned in this thread already or isn't in the 2nd post. Go ahead and write up an entry for it

It probably wont be the greatest list in the world, but at least if we can smooch in some basic trivia for most of them and such, people should be able to look for stuff to play (+chances are, in a far off future, that we might do some minor coverage of certain titles...)

Thanks Carn, I've got more games as well however I'll wait until the list is updated to see if I've got any that aren't on there (or any information on ones lacking a little tidbit or two).

In all honesty, I'm glad that there's a list as it does save a lot of time looking for some good horror games.

(Just wondering, is it alright to list games that a few people wouldn't consider a horror game? Initially they aren't, however the themes shift from that sort of sickly, happy environment into darker, more psychological thriller/horror? As I have a couple of games that look like normal RPGs until you move along the game and the closer you get towards the end the more twisted, gory and overall - uncomfortable to continue playing).

                        Updated!

Redid the top level entry for Umineko and Higurashi, Enetirnel.
(Adding the general genre description to the top level + main developer/creator + release of the first game in the series)

Think I might consider grouping other series too now
