Well, true, the "setting" is of course part of the main appeal when it comes to most games. (If it wasn't. Then I bet a lot of people would be playing H.U.R.L./Slob Zone, even in this day and age.)

Also true. But I have to say that there aren't many FPS games (if any, at all) that actually offer a proper and solid group co-op experience the same way Halo does.

Hey, as far as I'm concerned, to me, games are movies (or books in case of text dialogue) with an interactive aspect. I'm a movie fan first and foremost.
I wish that label could somehow vanish from the games industry "again", though. As the total playtime, story quality and interactivity of many such games, that indeed fit straight into that description, are comparable to budget DVD releases with "Interactive menus" as one of the listed things on the "Bonus Features" list

You don't see board games like Monopoly and Ladders released as toilet reading material... right? (Please don't prove me wrong on this one... please... )

Like the 360, the "etc" is a multitude of multiplatform titles from the usual publishers, and first party games such as GT5, another Forza, R&C or whatnot. There hasn't been a drought for over a year now, unless we're looking at titles selectively (in which case, it's been a desert for the past 3 years for me).

I can't think of a lot of big hitters in general that we know of for the new year. Even FFXIII's western release is a big question mark.

Anyway, online wise, my feelings are reflected with EX's comments. I'm not really much of an online gaming fan aside from the occasional fighter (all of them are peer to peer), so if I had to pay a subscription, I'd gladly pass. Not only that, I still love single player games and will always do.

My taste in gaming is old school, hence the dwindling interest in general. So for the last 6 months I had the 360, I didn't even have a valid subscription and when I did, I played some SFII Turbo and mostly UMK3.

My ID is Verdugo04, and I'm usually on from 10:00PM eastern until midnight these days playing SSFII Turbo HD Remix.

Someone had to say it. And, hey, at least you caught the reference.

Anyway, if I really wanted to be questioning things on a more serious note... I could go out and wonder why even PS3 first party titles are so "behind" when compared to their counterparts on other platforms. And yeah... I'm having a bit of a hard time finding stuff for next year to go with if I was a PS3 owner seeking to expand my library of exclusives.
(And oh, I'd also go out and question the Asian FFXIII release(s). Including Q1(?) 2009's PS3 demo.)

Heck, you'd have a hard time expanding a whole exclusive library on the 360 too. Then again, what's new since 2007? It's always about first or second party software when looking for exclusives for a while now. The difference is the online experience basically from a gamer's point of view. I've said it before and I'll say it again, I can't recommend owning both consoles if someone is a third party fan.

My decision maker was the BD factor, and once an overall better player comes along, I'll bid it farewell.

As far as I could remember, SCEI games past the PS1 days have been delayed and eventually released (GT2000 anyone?). The ones that kept software coming steadily were the second parties like Insomniac and (then) Naughty Dog.

Whether FFXIII is released in the spring or fall, people better bone up on their Japanese because the western releases won't happen until they finish the 360 version, which they haven't even started on.

Not that I'm overly exited about some of these, but they are still considered exclusives, but I just snatched The Last Remnant and Broken Bond in November (along with a huge pile of PC/360 or full multi-platform titles). And early next year is Halo Wars, which reminds me of how hilarious it kinda is that Halo 3 was officially announced a year after Killzone 2, came out a year ago and now has a full expansion announced + a spin-off. (Not to mention the steps from canned Gran Turismo HD -> Prologue Demo -> Prologue, the later which is still just an expanded and glorified demo in my eyes, vs. PGR3-4 and Forza 2.)

Sony has a lot of catching up to do, really.
(Though, they did churn out Killzone: Liberation on the PSP, which is pretty nice. But then again... where's Gran Turismo Portable?)

I've actually been eying one of Samsung's new players for some time now. It costs half of what the PS3 costs here and seems to be a ground up solid player. But the region stuff is kinda annoying me on the BluRay format, especially since I was a pretty heavy importer of Asian DVDs (both R2 and some R3) and some US R1s. I've found some nice lists over releases that are region free, though. Which has boosted my interest in evt. grabbing a BR player. But the problem is that with the PS3, I could just as well buy one of those new ACER laptops with a bluray player for almost the same price and run a region disabler on it + use it for something else than "just" what is most certainly the best alternative for a BluRay player (Getting a computer setup with one, that is).

I think the really interesting question in terms of FFXIII is basically how "complete" the Japanese version has to be before they actually start the production of both the localization and the 360 version. (Some studios have a bad habit of starting localization before the design and main database is even locked down. Others have everything finalized ages in advance and just have an insanely long QA period for their local market, while also (ab)using the Localization team to squash a few extra while they're at it)

Also, since the Crystal Tools was up and running for PC/360 before they even had any proper specs for the PS3, porting should almost be an over-the-night job. So for all we know, the international releases might end up being much more "back to back" than you'd initially expect.

To each his own; Sony's exclusives do have their fans. Two of which are GT and GOWIII, both out next year. Ironically the latter has progressed more smoothly than GT5.

Killzone 2 was, and still is, their technical showcase for the genre. So the delay hasn't exactly surprised me considering what the first build really was.

As for FFXIII, Crystal Tools is still a PC based engine. Porting the code to the 360 will still require some tweaking so I wouldn't call it an overnight type of work. Either way, they just recently had the PS3 build up and running, and they've made it clear that getting the Japanese version out the door is a priority. A given for SE anyway.

As for a BD player, without going into a lot of detail, I'd go for an entry level Panasonic one rather than anything made by Samsung or LG right now (Fox's DRM has particularly hindered compatibility with some titles) . Make sure it's profile 2.0 though. The PS3 has the edge with the frequent firmware updates, and loading times even compared to a $2200 Elite player.

Regional locking stinks given that PAL region libraries are more robust, and catalogue titles often see a release there months in advance. Case in point, the Burton Batman movies (out later this month in the UK and March in NA).

Warner and Universal have been keeping their discs region free so far thankfully, though who knows how long that will last. Speaking of which, The Dark Knight made a not-so subtle cameo in a PS3 commercial recently. It's poised to be the format's "Matrix" so I'm not entirely surprised.
