Favorite Villains

In videogames, who are your favorite bad guys? Alos, why do you like them?

Note: Monsters, generally, are not villains. Nemesis from RE for example has no will of its own so it's an antagonist, not a villain.

My list:
The Elder God (Legacy of Kain) - Voiced by the late and great Tony Jay, he was a gaint Lovecraftian horror who had orchestrated every great evil in the game's history. With its arrogance and power, I found it a quite awesome villain.

Walter Sullivan (Silent Hill 4) - A very tragic and sad character who nevertheless is a crazy serial killer who we must stop. I liked learning about Walter's twisted life.

Kuja (Final Fantasy IX) - Best FF villain in my opinio. All of Kefka's sadistic tendencies but he was sitll sane and had real motivation.

Solidus Snake (Metal Gear Solid) - My favorite Snake brother. He was the "grey" Snake to compete with the Brother of Light and the Brother of Dark. He died an anti-hero IMO but some view him as a villain.

And those are all I can think of right now.

Scolar Visari (Killzone) - In a game riddled with WWII connotations, there had to be a Hitler-esque leader, and that leader comes in the form of Brian Cox. That's all that needs to be said - Brian Cox rambling like a madman. That's enough to please anyone.

Zero (Metal Gear Solid) - What I find amusing are the large number of pissweasels who are so eager to praise Big Boss, yet conveniently forget the fact that he stole WMDs, raised child soldiers and threatened the world with nuclear holocaust. Zero, on the other hand, wanted to carry on with the will of The Boss, something that could have been done if Big Boss hadn't broken away, and subsequently pushed Zero over the brink into insanity. This is why we need another prequel in the series, so they can flesh out the relationship between Zero and The Boss, instead of just "lol SAS".

Oswell E. Spencer (Resident Evil) - Another elderly British gentleman who also turns out to be an utter bar-steward. I liked the fact that he was this enigmatic, yet omnipresent force in the RE universe. In a sense, he WAS Umbrella. The mysterious founder of the very company that's the cause of everything in the series. Finally, we have a chance of figuring out his true motives. He kept his cards very close to his chest. In many ways he reminds me of Davros from Doctor Who. Physically no threat, but with overwhelming influencial power. Funnily enough, Davros too was confined to a wheelchair - and was a scientist.

Revolver Ocelot - Metal Gear Solid series
Well he just about did it all, didn't he? Son of a legendary soldier born on the shores of Normandy on D-Day? Check. Confiscated by the Philosophers? Check. GRU Major, commander of his own unit? Check. Double agent? Check. Triple agent? Check. Ricochet expert? Check. Co-founder of the Patriots? CHECK. I could go on for a while but I'll stop here. In the world of Metal Gear Solid, where things are never what they seem and there is never any black and white, good and bad, it's tough to call Ocelot a 'villain' in lieu of what MGS4's ending taught us...but he was there, from beginning to end, always in the shadows...always doing something. The ultimate bad-ass.


Sin/Jecht - Final Fantasy X
What? A giant whale that obliterates entire cities in one fell swoop? Wait, it's not a whale? It's your father? WTF? After playing through FFX a couple times, I appreciate Sin for what he was -- a giant whale...that obliterates entire cities in one fell swoop. But then, he turns out to be so much more. Braska's Final Aeon? That battle was awesome...made mostly by the music that played during the battle.

Seifer - Final Fantasy VIII
Sure, he was under some sort of spell for more than half the game, but you can't deny his overall bad-assery. The mission in Dollet spent with Seifer on your team for a duration of about 5 battles is the most powerful I've ever felt in a video game(even moreso than controlling Sephiroth in the Nibelheim flashback in FF7). There's something about his blind devotion to the Sorceress that makes me admire him as a villain. Plus, that trenchcoat is the ultimate bad-ass attire.

King Bohan - Heavenly Sword
This game does not get enough credit, and neither does Bohan. Sure, he was pretty much a pussy who made his 3 henchmen do all of his dirty work, but when push came to shove, he was an excellent final boss in an extremely underrated game. Did I mention Andy Serkis mo-capped and voiced him? Awesome. AWESOME.

Umm... For EVERY game?
Let's see, in no particular order, my top 5 all time favorite video game antagonists (they're not always VILLAINS) are:

Liquid Snake: MGS1 - I always thought he was such an ideal villain for Snake. For obvious reasons of course. But I always liked him as a villain more than Ocelot.

Wesker: RE1 - They milked the hell out of him, and it's damn unfortunate. But back in RE1/Remake, he was the fucking man. He was slick, calculating, precise and ruthless. Exactly my kind of villain.

Shao Kahn: Mortal Kombat II and 3 - He's powerful, wrathful, evil, and he has presence like almost no other MK villain had. I think Shao Kahn did a great job of giving off that, "Oh crap. I'm not gonna mess with this guy!" aura.

King Bohan: Heavenly Sword - Although a fairly short game, and not yet a full blown franchise. I gotta say, King Bohan was very, very memorable. I was never sure whether he was funny or not. Some of the things he did made me want to laugh, but then he was so ruthless, and treated everyone--even the only person(?) who actually loved him--like garbage. He had a lot of presence as a villain.

Dr. Nefarious: Ratchet and Clank Up Your Arsenal - This guy was like something out of Invader Zim. He was eccentric, buggy robot, who, when angered, froze and started broadcasting an audio of a soap opera. I think he was the most developed villain in the whole series, and I'm hoping to see his return in the future.

Well, Morpheus is like a less girly version of Sephiroth. So I guess he's alright.

He's my favorite villain for a few reasons. One of them is, as evidenced by my list, I like villains that are mentally unstable. I think it makes for an interesting storyline and character interactions. The second is that fact that Morpheus is just so camp and over the top. And the third is because he had electrical powers, and when I was a kid and my friends and I played X-men, I would always have electric powers.
