I wouldn't buy it to save my life. I think certain games, like RE1, although started a cult following, everyone acknowledged that RE1 was far from perfect. And a remake was welcome.
But FF7, overrated or not, is one of those games that's so iconic, that it should NOT be remade. First of all, I think voice overs wouldn't do justice to it, anyway.
But yeah, it's just one of those games like Zelda Ocarina of Time, like Silent Hill 2, where it's so iconic that it should not be remade... I mean, it's like having a remake of "The Godfather" you know?
That didn't stop them from remaking Metal Gear Solid.

Yeah, but that was a GameCube exclusive. To me, it felt more like a gift to those gamers who bought the Cube, and ended up with barely any really serious games on it. So they got MGS1. Except instead of a direct port like Capcom did with RE2 and 3, Kojima said, "Let's have a third party developer make an updated version."
And yes, it was a big release on the Cube, but overall, it wasn't like this huge major release like Remake.
final fantasy have a wonderful story and its all cool but im more into resident evil
the horror everything about re is just kick ass so im with resident evil in this one.
with dissidia fina fnatsy coming out in mid 09 and the blu ray verison of FFVII AC also coming out next year the big spec is a FFVII rerelease rather than a remake and with my knowledge of square pulling stuff out its ass a video of it will be included with the blu reay advent children
Well now they certainly aren't. They focus too much on eye-candy as opposed to story and gameplay mechanics, etc. But they had a good run of 10 games (11 for me, I personally liked X-2).
But back when it first came out, it was the second RPG behind Dragon Quest, and it was much more popular (or so I think). FF more or less popularized the genre for the rest of the world (while both it and DQ did for Japan at first), so I'd say that's a pretty true RPG. It has all the elements, good stories (for their respective times), etc.
