  • End of an era...EGM is cancelled

it was jsut announced on gamespot that EGM is cancelled. its now the end of days cause now all we have left is gamepro and game informer, i have no grudge against gamepro but if i have to go to game informer for gaming news then i would just not want ot be a gamer anymore.

those guys are nothing but adds and they have given up on there gaming routes the minutes gamestop bought them...with a lot of my fave mags being canceled[PSM, gamefan, and now EGM] it makes me wonder if we'll see yet another game crash like we did in the 80s, due to mediocre games and the recent american economy.

The news was announced yesterday with the ZD sell off.

Exaggerate much? The industry is pulling in more revenue than ever overall, with many more platinum selling games even during a recession (that you may or may not care for). GameFan has been out of commission for years now too, and PSM... I'm surprised that anyone misses them. I think I've bought 4 mags since 1999.

The print press overall has been in a steady decline for a while now, and given ZD's woes, this shouldn't have come as a surprise. Aside from the odd exclusive once in a while, EGM has been irrelevant since the late 90's (the same can be said for all of them now anyway). Controversies with publishers' attitude (and Hsu's) is the only noteworthy thing that comes to mind in recent years so that alone speaks volumes.

All game mags will disappear sooner or later and the substitute isn't exactly bad. Even Edge is releasing their noteworthy pieces online a little after print dates.

It's just like what is happening with reference books in the library I work in. With everything moving to digital, it is only natural fewer magazines will be in print in the upcoming years. I only get mags these days if they have RE related or if my friend at the book store gives them to me for free.

Man, the crazies are really coming out in full force on this. I'm beginning to lose count of how many times I've read "This is all Nintendo's fault!" *facepalm*

I realllllllllllllllly hated it when the Australian PS1 magazine slowly transformed into a PS2 magazine with the announcment and coming news. I remember half the magazine being dedicated to the PS2 one issue, with only news and thoughts on upcoming games.

EGM I stopped buying in 2002 because the issues got thin and yet the number of ads when way up... I remember when EGM's used to have like around 200 pages a month in the mid 90's, and was so big they split it off as EGM2 for cheat, codes, guides and yet the main magazine still continued to get bigger until the late 90's. I think one of the biggest issues I can recall was the July 1997 issue - post E3 97. It was crazy big... like phonebook big... like 300 pages I think.

PSM... that was a quality magazine from like 1997 until 2000.... then they started getting thinner too, yet had more ads than ever. I stopped getting it after that...

The last magazine I ever brought consistantly was PSW (previously PlayStation World) from the UK and Australia because they had a covermount DVD with direct feed trailers for a number of years before online sites provided those content. Once that started to be more common place PSW wasn't great, the quality of the writing began to drop, and I stopped buying them in 2005.

But as Umon pointed out, as if people couldn't see this one coming a mile away.

1 year ago 1up/ZD was facing full on bankruptcy, and their shareholders split stocks to wipe debt and keep the company alive. Dan "Shoe" Hsu stood down six months later as EIC of EGM and 1up clearly on the fact that the company was still struggling. Then rumors started up again about a month or two back about the company being sold off to UGO.

By not moving the entire company across as it is they've [UGO] effectively cut the legs off their investment... smart thing to have done was not fire anyone yet, make the transition, give it three-six months of development and poll their userbase about whats good and not and then axe clearly what doesn't work - the removal of the staff that make the podcasts, main content, and video content is obviously a poor move because this is actually what makes 1up tick - but UGO clearly wants to fill these roles with people they already have.

I also think EGM should have gotten a final Feb issue, marking the magazine lasting to it's 20th year - and thus allowing for a final word from it's staff and retrospecting the history of the magazine.

Didn't really read American gaming mags but I thank the one where I spotted Xenogears. Could of been either Gamepro or EGM.

Edit: Is Playstation Plus in the UK still going? Man, that thing was like a pr0n mag. But they did a few good jokes like "SCUM".

Funny enough, I use to get PSW at my local store a while back, because of the DVD package and some of the magazine info. Today, it's pretty much buying the 360 magazine and EDGE from time-to-time.

I don't really see the point in buying a magazine anymore. I stopped in... 2003?
