  • Star Wars Battlefront 3

It was originally speculated that Free Radical Design would be developing the game, after announcing that they were working on a "Secret LucasArts Project". It was also reported that the game will allow ships to fly from ground to orbit. However on December Free Radical announced that their company had gone into administration, and that the project had been handed down to Rebellion Developments, the developers behind Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron. After that renders of Star Wars characters surfaced from a laid off employee of Free Radical, bearing the Star Wars Battlefront III watermark and this was followed by leaked gameplay footage. On January concept design artwork for Dark Obi-Wan Kenobi was revealed, apparently Obi Wan has been corrupted by the dark side and now he is leaving in the swamps of Dagobah. Unfortunately now that the game has moved to new developers the technology that allows players to fly from ground to orbit will be staying with Free Radical. Shame.

I think it's gonna fail without Free Rad. That gameplay footage looked so good, I havent played Renegade Squadron its a psp game isnt it? Anyone played it, how does it hold up compared to the other battlefronts.

Yeah I saw the article mentioning the code staying with Free Radical on Kotaku. Tis a shame really that they aren't going to have that still with the new production team, although maybe they'll code their own version of this, who knows?

The footage that was leaked of Free Radicals stuff looked really good, although the characters looked like they ran a little quickly in some sections, but otherwise looked like a game that was coming along nicely. Tis a real shame we won't ever see that version. Maybe it will become the Star Wars equivalent of 1.5 ;D

i really really really really really really really hope that version doesn't get scrapped and the new devs continue on with it.

and i wonder what made Obi Wan turn to the dark side? and then back, but he looks really BADASS for a dark jedi though, all messed up and all, it's so damn cool.

So what was the point of this post?

It's a shame that battle-front 3 was canend because that looked rather promising, and Free Radical was doing a great job on the technology/engine they had. Such a shame.

That certainly sounds like a great concept. Battlefront 2 was a pretty fun game but I always wished you could do things on a much grander scale. This sounds like what I would've wanted but it's a shame if Rebellion don't bring over those development concepts and instead make just another HD Battlefront =(

It's a big shame that Ubisoft made them have to restart Haze's development numerous times, hence them causing money problems when the founder of free radical left with several members of the team to start a new company, leaving the other divisions on the other projects with no money at all. Free Radical are very creative, but I think that they shouldn't of gone through with Haze, or the team that was on it for that matter, and just focused on Battlefront 3 and Timesplitters 4.

Whoever is glad about Free-Radcial being in liquidation because of one game fuck-up, should honestly shut up and think twice about the situation. I just hope either some big company would pick them up. Hopefully Microsoft because of Rare and the whole community and live for them to use for their online area for TS. Such a huge shame...

People who don't like Free Radical don't like good games!
Thus they have no reason to talk about games and/or be on any gaming related site or forum.

'Tis a real shame if this stuff does not get put to good use. (Battlefront III material and any evt. work on Time Splitters 4)

I loved the first SW Battlefront!
Never played it online, just against bots but I had a ton of great times with it.

I rushed out and bought SW-BF2 as soon as it was released and found it quite disappointing. It was better in a lot of ways but it just wasn't as FUN to play, IMO.
My biggest gripe was the removal of the realtime 'scoreboard'. Seeing the enemy and friendly numbers going down made it like a sport. Hunting the last enemy survivor or loosing badly and trying to survive against overwhelming odds, seeing you're the last alive and going Rambo...
The 2nd game seemed to lose a lot of that magic.

SW-BF3 on PS3/360/(Wii?) will surely happen one way or the other. It's a popular series that makes money.
