  • Max Payne Xbox

I bought this yesterday and finished it today after a good five hours playing it this afternoon.

My score for the port: 5/10.

GRAPHICS: I'd say it's the equivalent of medium settings on PC. Looks alright, but there were times when the snowstorm seemed non-present Oh well.

SOUND: No complaints here, great audio all round. No cuts. I noticed a few very rare glitches that righted themselves after a minute or two, but that was okay

FRAMERATE: Nothing below 15fps, and it ran at a good 30FPS 90% of the time, so it's all good.

GAMEPLAY: The autoaim helped me drill down enemies a shitload quicker, which made it more fun in some respects, but it was always over too quick. I guess to make up for the shockingly inaccurate analog stick, they implemented the autoaim. On a side note, bullet time seemed slower in this version, but maybe that's just me. Also, enemy difficulty remained the same, so it wasn't too hard.

CONTROLS: Not too bad, but the analog sticks sucked, to me. I hate analog sticks, so that's just my opinion. I really don't like games that use them really heavily for aiming and stuff, but oh well.

LOADING: Real shockingly bad stuff. About 15-30 seconds per load, and you can only go through four or five small rooms or one or two big rooms before another loading screen appears. There's usually about three or four loading points per chapter.

VERDICT: Get the PC version if you can. Much better than the Xbox edition

(PS: I just had a revelation and realized that James McCaffery (the Max Payne VA) also done Edward Carnby in AITD5. Pure pwnage.)

I already have the kick ass PC version. Any news on Max Payne 3? I heard that the game is on production...

Remedy ain't doing a Max Payne 3, last I heard. I'm kinda apprehensive about a third game. The first game didn't feel fit for a sequel, but Remedy amazingly pulled it off really well. The story was strong and the gameplay was stronger.

Max Payne 3 though? I can't picture it. Max has already learned to forgive himself, and he and Mona have (presumably) hooked up [no she didn't die; play the game on the hardest difficulty and see what I mean].

I agree that the story by the end of Max Payne 2 is pretty much complete but there's a hint for a sequel after the end credits. Remember? Also I don't like the alternate ending of the game, Max and Mona had a thing going on between them but she was too dangerous and Max would have ended getting hurt again.

Whatever you do, do not touch the PS2 version. It's easily the worst version of the lot...

I agree though, Xbox version pales in comparison to PC version.

What's bad about the PS2 version?

Oh, I almost forgot about the loading points. I added a new bit to the OP.

It's just the PS2 version has even more loading screens than the Xbox version (and chopped into more chapters because of it), but that's about it. I just noticed that you found the loading screens for the Xbox version tortuous so thought I'd warn you.

The PC version also has more rooms to explore than either the Xbox and PS2 version.

Yeah, I noticed that a lot of rooms were locked off in the Xbox version, and many had the useful contents placed near the door so you could still grab the goodies.

I didn't wholly "OH FUCK" mind the loading screens, but I found it a bit quirky and it made unnecessary breaks in the action. The Xbox is almost identical to a PC, why not just use the hard drive as a little storage device to feed map data to the memory when needed? I can now clearly see why you need to install games on PS3 and 360.
