I think it'll be more things like the Council and humanity's standing, which NPC's are still alive and kicking, stuff like that. There won't be many huge changes I suspect.

I think some of the things will have big consequences though, with the biggest one being decided by who you chose to be on the council.

Can I just ask: did anyone actually even consider Udina for the council?

I doubt it. If the Shepard is really dead, I want to have the possibility to customize name, look and background of my new character.

Bioware's Mass Effect 2 product description on Amazon has unveiled the game's overall objective and lead character.

Despite the debut trailer suggesting that Commander Shepard had been "killed in action", Amazon says that you once again play as Shepard, with players being able to further customise his appearance.

The objective of the game is apparently to investigate the disappearance of humans across the galaxy; a mission that will take players into the "heart of enemy territory".

The product description also suggests that there will be improvements made to the combat and that the game will feature a refined dialogue system.

Mass Effect 2 is scheduled to be released for the PC and 360 in January 2010.
