  • How to upgrade a PS3's hard drive?

Alright, I've got a 40gig PS3. This is woefully inadequate. I've got Metal Gear, Fallout, Siren, Mirror's Edge and Valkyria Chronicles and a few other odds and ends such as some music and a couple of demos on it's hard drive and I'm damn near out of room. So, I need an upgrade. For preference without buying, you know, a new one.

I know you can physically have the drive upgraded but I assume you loose all information, which will drive me nuts. I know switching them in and out doesn't work either, like the 360. Or so I'm led to believe, anyway. So...is there anyway to simply add extra storage to a PS3? Plug in an external hard drive or the like?

Yes, I'm woefully uneducated in such things.

Well, doing some more rummaging, I've found that it seems quite simple to save your settings and such to an external device such as a memory stick and then switch out the hard drive with a new one, but oddly can't find anything regarding using a external drive with them bar as a back up tool. I'm probably looking in the wrong place.

You can change the internal HDD with simple Laptop ones, of course, if they're supported.
You can have upto 320gb I think, people replace the 40gb because it's so small.
I have a 40, and I currently have 8gb left; I delete the game data when I'm not using the game, like MGS4, or Home, it really gives you space.
But, the HDD will eventually be full, nevertheless, you can use an external HDD through USB, but I'm unsure if you can even USE the saves while it's in, and you can't copy demos to it.

If you delete a game does it also delete the saves and such off the hard drive?

If you delete the Game Data but not the Saved data, it shouldnt.
If you have a game downloaded from PSN and delete it, the Save data should still be on your HDD.
But theres also the case that Game Data can be DLC, but even if you delete that, you can redownload it.

The best and simplest way to do it!
You will need to own, buy or borrow an External HDD.

Plug the external HDD in with the USB.
I've got a 'Western Digital' and didn't have to format it or anything. Just plugged it in and it was ready to rock.
(note: an External HDD can only be used for videos, music and photos, NOT for demos, games and game data! But you can use it to back up your internal HDD)

Go to 'back up utility' in the PS3 menu.
It should ask you if you want to back it up to 'external USB device' (or it's something like that). Say yes.
This will 'back up' (copy) the entire contents of your present internal HDD. All game saves, game patches, demos EVERYTHING... the process takes some time.

When finished, you can switch everything off and then take out your internal HDD (very simple to do). Put your new internal HDD into your PS3 (I used a 320gb 'Seagate').
Then power up the PS3 again and return to the 'back up' feature on the menu. Then you just do it in reverse. Move the entire external HDD's contents back over to your new internal HDD.

When finished, your PS3 will be exactly as it was before (you will lose nothing) but you'll have a LOT more space to use.

I chose to keep my external HDD plugged in. I just wiped the back up data from it and use it to store videos, music and photos. You can do this by choosing something on your internal HDD, press 'Triangle' for options, then 'copy'. Once you copy it to your External HDD, you can just delete it from your internal HDD.

So I got 320gb 'external' for videos, music and photos and 320gb 'internal' for games, demos and game data.

For external HDDs I would suggest getting the WD-640 with Antec MX-1 enclosure. Reliable and quiet. I tend to stay away from the pre-built external HDDs..

Oddly enough this was one thing I saw IGN do right, they did an instructional video on how to do it. Considering what steps are needed, it's worth seeing this as a visual.
