If there were to be a Metal Gear Game made without Kojima at the helm, i don't think id want to see it. Because Metal gear is Kojima's thing, no one can do better than him at his own thing. It would be like seeing a Star Wars film not made by George Lucas, it's just wrong.Last edited by Mr. Spencer; 05-28-2009, 02:09 PM.See you in hell.

But no, my problem here is the fact that Kojima is continuing the series, when he told all he needed to in MGS4, if it's a prequel it'll be mysteriously overlooked within MGS4, and if it's a sequel it'll just artificially extend characters.

I have a theory about this. Say Kojima wants to end MGS, and he did so with MGS4. But Konami wants to milk it, pretty much forcing Kojima into working on it (risk someone potentially running the franchise into the ground or grind your teeth and work it through). If hes the kind of man who I think he is, then hes got too much emotionally invested into MGS to just let go, especially considering that not many franchises have survived the change in leadership.
But I agree. Artificially extending characters would be terribad. Theres only a number of grey areas that "could" offer a story platform (but really, shouldnt). I wouldnt mind seeing-
Solid Snakes Green Beret days
Liquid Snakes SAS days
Big Boss post MPO days
And then theres Raiden between MGS2 and MGS4, which Im not too thrilled about

missvalentine, they canned the game because the event was too recent and would have sparked a lot of negativity towards Konami. Although they were pretty ambitious with the project.

I have a lot of respect towards him for not giving it up to the chance.
Considering the complaining and hate Ive seen for the last 4 years, its as if some of you *want* him to give up MGS, just so you would have some validation to your negativity. Because frankly, the talent of the team does not mean the team can pursue the leaders vision without his lead.
You said you you were happy that me nor missvalentine were leading a successful franchise. But with all honesty, its your kind of mentality which has caused a lot of franchises to stray off the winning formula that made them great. And yes, while a lot of them became a commercial success, with change in leadership, and change in direction, a lot of fans were alienated. Looking at MGS today, its one of the only games that has stayed more or less the same.
And at the same time, stayed successful.
All in all. It just makes a lot more sense to "assume" that Kojima doesnt want his game to be ran into ground, than to call him an egoist.
Who knows if MGS5 will be any good with or without him. And as I've said once already, and as this thread proves, thats all opinion anyway. You don't think the series is that bad, but there are people here who didn't like MGS4. There are also plenty of people here who thought the MGS has already been run into the ground by one of the previous main series games even before then.
You've also gotten my point entirely wrong which I find heeeeelerious. As I said earlier I don't actually care if Kojima continues to want to direct, I just want him to stop pulling out the "I'm not going to direct the next one" card and quit the "I want to work on something else" line when he brings this upon himself. My discussion on why he cant let go is pure conjecture on my opinion of why he can't. My only other real issue is that, regardless of continuing Metal Gear, in general the best thing for the series right now... would actually be a break, considering they haven't had one since... well MGS. I think everyone, even you, could agree take a year or two off and work on something else before coming back to it will probably help the game in the long run. Kojima's point of why he needs to even consider working on something else is more to do with taking a break from Metal Gear anyway.
missvalentine - I'm shouldnt even dignify your message with a responce on the basis of your poor analogies. It's already been pointed out, but neither original Star Wars sequel was directed by Lucas - Irvin Kershner on Empire, Richard Marquand on Jedi (making it's comparison to Kojima's requirement to direct all entirely pointless). Personally I found Johnson's directing of JP3 was the least of it's issues, the real problem was its script and inherently some dubious pacing and acting choices - additionally I wasn't even a fan of the second because it deviated horribly from the novel and as much as I like Spielberg, JP2 is definently not anywhere near one of his better films.
And... and... if you're going to use any of the Alien's films as an example dear god use the last two... A comparison of the two that were good (and the fact that Aliens is considered a successful sequel since it's release entirely because its different than Scott's original) is a poor comparison piece here.
Again, you also brush over the fact that Kojima's still in charge of this department. Director or not, he can still have a large amount of control here. It's not like it would be if he'd quit Konami and didn't want to stick around and direct. Then... and only then, I'd probably agree not having him around to direct would be entirely bad. But then it wouldn't be him writing it either.
In the end, I'll agree to disagree with you both. Reply as you need, and I'll ease off on this. In the end, the one thing I think everyone can agree on it it will be interesting to see what Kojima provides in a couple of days from now.

Kojima's still there, it's his team, he doesn't need to be the director to still have the majority of control anyway so it's a mute point.
Usually, if self-loving and egoistic people are being challenged, they drop everything and want to prove that everyone else is wrong, thus allowing others to fuck it up so they can feel better. Doesnt seem like that case here.
You honestly believe that shared creative control is good for the pace and progress? It isnt. It will just create a lot of tention and unneeded backtracking.

2. I dont know about you, but I dont see it as a problem, not at all. Youre not giving the guy the benefit of the doubt and slander him as someone ego issues. I find it very akward that you couldnt relate to him, considering your own sweat and work that went into REfan. At the very least, I figured people whove created something successful, would understand the pressure. Note, Im not saying "right" or "wrong", just saying that its understandable.
3. I also think that at least some communication with the community, in a non-formal Eastern-like way, is always welcome. I dont know what is it that people are expecting. "Kojima eating his own words"? Times are fickle, plans change. The reward is that MGS for me has been the most consistent series Ive played, and considering theres not many of those around...
And I agree about the break. Ive also noticed that a lot of people here have a lot to gain if he does move on to other projects, I also see that those other projects are *sequels* [sic!].
Im a firm believer that unless people are very, very competent, they should stick to their trade. Unsuccessful exploitations of franchises and high-grade artistic experiments are a waste of time, money and talent. Besides, Ive heard he was doing a lot of research in different studios seemingly with no relation to MGS so Im fairly confident he does have something up in the long run. 18 month development cycles are a thing of the past anyway.

Whether or not a person likes, using your examples, RE4 and RE5 has no bearing whatsoever on whether or not they will like certain games in other series. While I am sure there are exceptions, most gamers have different expectations for different video games series, because certain expectations are not relevant to every genre or series out there.
Just because someone may like RE4 or RE5 and yet dislike MGS2, 3, or 4 is in no way ironic.
Say, for example, someone thinks that both the MGS series and the RE series have been run into the ground. It's likely going to be for very different reasons. Why? Because MGS and RE are two very different series, and what a person enjoys about each will differ. Even if, superficially, the reasons a person enjoys each series is the same (e.g. gameplay and story), the reasons they enjoy the gameplay and story of each series will differ greatly.Last edited by Archelon; 05-28-2009, 11:43 PM.

The irony was in the fact that for a lot of people, MGS has changed a lot, and there is a significant gap between MGS4 and MGS, even though the basics are still the same. And from my observations in this forum, the same people who arent pleased with the evolutionary changes in MGS franchise, are very pleased with the revolutionary jumps and inconsistency in RE franchise.
