I cant believe theres no S.T.A.L.K.E.R. thread here. For those who dont know, STALKER is an FPS with RPG elements, taking place in the "Zone", a 30 kilometre radius area around the Chernobyl NPP, where living conditions are harsh and due to a couple of incidents, various mutants and anomalies (local distortions of time and space, usually lethal) have rendered most of it unhospitable for anumber of time. After Ukrainian armed forces quarantined the entire area, it has become its own post-apocalyptic world. According to the background story, the Zone has attracted a lot of people, usually those which see it as a last chance of survival (criminals, greedy and selfish scum, et cetera) aswell as scientists, and the most valued treasures are the so called "artifacts", which are various minerals and "things" created by the zones anomalies.
Its definitely the most atmospheric videogame there is and the architecture, NPCs, nature and level design are very authentic, very Soviet (post-soviet).
Theres a 1935 version out aswell, a pre-alpha version, which is what the game was supposed to be like originally, but Shadow of Chernobyl (first STALKER) is impressive nonetheless.
If anyone wants to give the game a shot, should remember that the game was released in a butchered down state, a lot of its awesome features cut out. So its vital that you play the game with mods. There are 3-4 global mods (change, enhance, tweak all aspects of the game, adding additional content, aswell as general bug fixes) out of which the most known ones are:
- AMK md (my personal favourite)
- Oblivion Lost
- Priboi Story (builds and entirely new campaign on the existing one)
Theres also a need for weather cycle mods, as the default one only has a few. Nightz or Weather Overhaul mod increases the available weather patterns to 24+ and most of them will make you breathless. 5 AM in the Zone is amazing.
STALKER experience will also greatly improve if you have a realistic weapons mod installed. The game becomes ridiculously challenging and the moves the AI makes in the game is really amazing. For example, they will lure you into traps and ambushes and the CQB fights are a pure nightmare. Various AI enhancement packs make STALKER one of the TOP 3 (in my books) games enemy AI wise.
Who needs help with modding, I can answer to the best of my abilities. I also have a 200 MB mod pack which is stable and running without conflicts, that has the right mix of the best stuff in it. Textures, weather, AI, better skins, et cetera. And if you want to see how the game plays I can set up a live stream videolink-
