  • Crysis 2 Announced : MULTIPLATFORM LOL :P

    http://www.gamezine.co.uk/news/crytek-announces-crysis-2-consoles-and-pc-$1300130.htm

Today EA and Crytek announced Crysis 2 for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC.

The next instalment of Crysis will be the first game built on Crytek's CryENGINE 3 and will be released for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC. EA will publish the game.

"The development of Crysis 2 marks a major stepping stone for our studio," said Cevat Yerli, CEO and President of Crytek.

"This is not only the next game in the Crysis franchise, it’s the first title we are developing for consoles and the first title being built on CryENGINE 3. We are excited to have the support of EA Partners again as we work together to make the launch of Crysis 2 a huge event."

Yes, it looks good, but worse than Crysis on Very High/Enthusiast.

I have, its months now since it was announced. Have you seen the framedrops at that continental forrest part? Or how washed out the graphics were in the beach part? Then theres the issue with console hardware being able to run Crysis 2 properly without the game being significantly downgraded either map scale wise or texture wise. I can guarantee you that CE3 on consoles will not even come close to CE2 on PCs and the whole game is going to be a significant downgrade. But this was all expected, considering how much complaining there was from Cryteks ranks on how much the sales were affected by piracy.

If only they were able to make the multiplayer work properly...

However, I am going to be very pleased if they were able to deliver at least half the Crysis experience, because Crysis was pretty much the only single player sandbox game with true and proper infinite possibilities to tackle any obstacle. Unfortunately for PS3 and X360 users, even though CE3 will most probably have significant modding support (CE2 mod projects had extensive support from devs), will probably not receive the necessary gameplay enhancement mods Crysis 2 will probably need (such as AI improvements).

One thing that "multiplatform" does spell for CE3, is [HOLY SHIT! Party poker QUEEN QUADS! THANK YOU RANDOMNESS!] pussified vehicular controls. I was so disappointed with Crysis helo and VTOL controls, that I wanted to smack some kids in the face. Weve got 4 successful futuristic all-aspect combat titles today, and none of them have figured out how to properly develop VTOL controls (Dropship: United Peace Force was the only one who has ever done it). Nowadays they overly simplify them and while on one hand one cant exploit them, on the other, the reliance on skill is minimal, aswell as is the fun factor.

Prepare for a quality down-grade from crytech with their now multi-console strategy
As long as the pc version is still utilised and polished, with SDK support, I am fine with it.

Considering its a multiplatform, and not on parallel development, PC version is most probably going to be as downgraded as the console versions, however, I do hope that the custom settings will be available. I dont mind the downgrade, aslong as they significantly improve on the multiplayer gameplay, but considering Crytek doesnt know anything about how to create a proper multiplayer game...

Crytek UK does on the other hand (Use to be Free Radical) and I am sure one of the biggest reasons for this new studio purchase was their experiance on console/multiplayer development with the TimeSplitters series, which is probably one of the best multiplayer games I have played in my life, easily soaking over around 100 hours of game-play friend fun. I want to hear something from their end though, it's a shame I'll probably have to wait until next year to get an update on their project.

TimeSplitters? Hmm... 100 hours isnt really all that much. I clock about 100 game hours during 1.5-2 months and there are some games in my repertoir that Ive played for 4 years now. Ive probably clocked 1500 hours into SWAT4 and BF2 each, in 5 years total and thats not really all that much if we put that into weekly perspective.

Really good games usually clock 300+ hours at least, competitive players clock 1500-2500-.... . RE4 is clocked at 14 on my xfire account and I hate that game with a passion

Yes, the game will be multiplatform, but from what I remember one of CE3 features is scalability. The engine is said to be made for both this and next generation of consoles.
Also, look at the Crysis itself - just because you could run it on an old computer (I've played the demo, when it was released, on my Sempron 2800+, 512mb RAM and Radeon 9550) doesn't mean that on a really powerful rig it won't look awesome.

100 hours of LAN game-play with friends, not online per Quite the achivement for a Local multiplayer game, but if they ever decided to make a new Time-splitters game, utilising online game-play this generation, it would be a solid hit, especially given their map maker skills back with TP2.

Oh man! I played it on a similar rig, albeit with a better processor. I had a P4 Prescott @ 3.0 Ghz. But the thing is, at lower and even medium specs, the game was playable, gameplay-wise enjoyable, but it was not too pretty and Im sure noone enjoyed 20 FPS. Scalability doesnt mean much if you have to sacrifice Crysis´ main selling point just so it would run on a console, without a hickup.

G-Man, 100 hours on LAN is indeed quite an achievement.

Crysis is a nightmare to run on vista, but on my old XP rig, I was able to play it fine on medium settings, and considering I had an old 1.8 processor, that was insane. But I doubt that Cryengine 3 will be a huge leap as its second engine was from one. They've just made it console adaptable, and I don't see many developers jumping on the wagon since of U3 taking the cake in this department. Time will tell.

Back to Timesplitters though, its diversity of modes, weapons, options, maps, etc, was the strength why both 2 and 3 had significant long legs in the LAN department. And given it this was on previous consoles, it was an amazing feat given the tools (One of the best map makers in its time) they had back then. I want to see the butter Crytech UK will give to the studio in this area, it better make a solid multiplayer experiance this time around.

I think GSC Game World is one to watch with Cryengine 3, I want to see what they could do with STALKER 2, or if they go down the multi-console aproach.

Depends on how much CE3 maps are going to be scaled down, Id like STALKER 2 to utilize vehicles properly. But I wouldnt mind a similar system implemented like in Clear Sky (Fallout 3 free area switching wasnt too good).

I'm still afraid of checking the amount of time I put into local split-screen multiplayer on Goldeneye, Perfect Dark and Time Splitters 2-3... (this during the period shortly following release. I know that before the GC came out, every profile on my Perfect Dark cartridge had gone beyond 100 hours of playtime. Time Splitters 2 and Future Perfect even went way beyond that...)

But, yeah, if Crytek UK are somehow involved in this, things should be in good hands (and hopefully there'll be split-screen... shitty next gen and PC games and their failure at split-screen games. What exactly are all those controller ports good for... like... besides beer drinking casuals playing sports games during workhours?)
