Damn. I really like the look of this thing. Sitting here looking at my fat-assed, shiny, oft-broken 60GB system makes me feel kind of depressed. But...at least I can still play PS2 games on it.

Here's an image gallery of the new Slim PS3:

That's my exact point, JB and I agree. At the minute, my PS2 is connected in my room and I can only have a certain amount of consoles there. Obviously, my 360 takes priority. Then I have my Wii and PS2. My PS3 is currently disconnected and gathering dust in the corner of my room. If I had BC on my PS3, I'd be more inclined to buy more PS3 games because it'd still be connected and would be easier to play the games to begin with. People don't want consoles clogging up their room.

Wow this news makes me kinda wish i didn't get my 80GB PS3 though I did buy it all with gift cards. It looks like the console wars are going strong and surprised that a newer smaller version of the PS3 is coming out this early.

            Does it still grill sandwiches?
I'm not suprised about the BC situation though. I think this model was all about cutting the price, and BC would have increased the price.
Really good news for all, even PS3 owners. Means more players on PSN, hopefully more publishers and developers investing even more in it. Also means that Microsoft and Nintendo might have to develop new strategies to keep their place in the market, now that Sony are more competitive (price wise).

BC will come via a firmware update Sony has patents for EE and GS emulation now.

Will pick up a PS3 Slim for myself when its out next month.
BC updates will eventually make the purchase much more interesting, it would just be a shame if the firmware is region locked as I have plenty of US PS2 games on my shelf and no US PS2 to play them on *it broke*.

I think it is silly for new consoles not to have BC as a mandatory feature. I mean, video gamers have extensive collections, and the software always outlives the hardware.
Yup. I have tons of consoles. I still have my N64 somewhere. It's just annoying that I'm forced to keep my PS2 in my room so I can play PS2 games I enjoy, yet I have their next gen console sitting disconnected next to it.

Same here. Lucky I still have me PS2 slim and it doesn't take up much room. I still have a few games on the PS2 that I haven't finished and play them since I'm don't have that many PS3 games. With my Wii I think I have played more Gamecube games with it than Wii games.

PS3 Slim bitsreams Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD MA audio, at last.

Slowly, ever so slowly we're beginning to learn about the internal differences between Sony's new PS3 Slim and its chubby ancestry. We already knew that it supported BraviaLink while talk of "faster gaming" was introduced (suspiciously) yesterday; something that remains very much in doubt until we can confirm. Now we hear that the fatboy gone slim supports Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio bitstream output to your receiver. Hear that audio nerds? Bitstream.

So the slim has PS1 BC??? Perfect excuse to get my hands on all of the Resident Evil games from PS1.

                            All PS3 models have PS1 backwards-compatability.

Well I don't have a PS3 so I didn't know... So the real trouble is PS2 BC then.

I hate buying component cables separately...

But oh well. We'll see about this new PS3. I might get it...
