  • PS3 Hard Drive Space.

Ok well I have one of those 40 Gig PS3's and I just completely run out of space!

I don't know how so much space has been taken up I only have 2 DLC's saved on there, and a bunch of saved games, and I usually delete installs after I'm done with a game. Yet I still have no space at all and it's a huge problem. My brother just bought Oblivion and he can't even install it cause there isn't enough space.

So I wanted to know if there is a way to increase the size of the PS3 hard drive, or how I can get and external hard drive. Is there anything I can do or do I have to buy a whole new PS3? I really don't want to resort to that.

The 40 gigs really got used up fast.

You know that booklet they throw in with the console? That's the manual and that tells you a few things to do on how to expand your HDD. Amazing, isn't it?

I happen to think that if you tried really hard, trained every day, and if you really wanted to, then you could be upgrading your PS3 hard drive to the level you've always wanted.

Whoa, alright lets not start a fight here alright.

I asked a guy at EB games about the PS3 HD and he said it's impossible to remove, so I made this topic, I didn't think to check my manual since i have no idea where it is since I got my PS3 years ago. So don't act as if I'm stupid.

There was no need for your post Stu, but lets not start a fight.

It wasn't meant to be taken so seriously to be fair.

But if that's what the guy in Gamestop told you, it's further evidence to support the theory that most people that work in videogame stores are complete and utter fucking morons. As stated, the PS3 MANUAL even tells you how to do it.

If you search google you'll find a ton of tutorials with pictures and videos on the subject. I hooked my PS3 up with a 250gb hard drive a few months ago for £60/$95 and it was a pretty painless procedure.

Also, worth remembering that you might have a 40gb hard drive, but you never have access to the full 40gb because of things like the hard drive's file system.

Hopefully this reply will go some of the way to appease some of the pain this may have left you or the other one replying haha

Well thanks for that, I didn't know.

I just had a bad day, and was pissed of by the responses I got, that's all.

you can upgrade it in a simple of easy steps. just don't strip the bolts as you unscrew. i didn't upgrade mine, i just took it out of the console to see if HDD was the cause of the YLOD (and sadly it wasn't).

you can go on newegg, and find cheap HDDs, like 500GB drives that run for like $100, but they have to be SATA 2.5", otherwise, they won't work, they also don't have to be the same RPM. PS3 HDDs are equipped with 5400 RPM drives, but you can upgrade to a 7200 for a little increase in speed (but its barely noticeable).

if you are mediaholic, then a 500GB will suit you just fine (they have 1TB drives but, but not sure if they can be compatible yet, but i read that 750GBs are).

if you use your PS3 like i do, then you wouldn't even need anything higher than 120GB, which would take me over a decade to fill up.

To save room on my 60GB, I just delete game installs when I'm done playing said game. It's quick and painless.

Everyone, chill out with this arguing business. It was an off hand comment and I think it's become a little bit personal. It seems we've all made friends now anyway .

Wow, thanks man I really appreciate it.

Ill get one of those 500 Gigs ones I think Ill need it since my brother wants a lot of Fallout 3 DLC and stuff and that game take up a LOT of space just on it's own.

Yeah I do that, but my space continues to be eaten away.

We don't have GameStop here. And I'm not a complete and utter fucking moron, thank you very much.

I'm in the process of upgrading mine.
It's taken me a few weeks haha.
I bought a 500gb hard disk for my lap top, and formatted the 80gb that was in it to put in my PS3.
I've opened the PS3 hard disk cradle up and had a look at it all. It looks really simple. But I want to back up all the media and installs I've got on my 40gb. I need to find someone with an external hard drive that's FAT32 formatted, because I don't think the front USB ports will recognize other formats.
And I'm pretty sure the internal hard disk has to be NTFS formatted. When I get up to that bit I can confirm.

get a thumb drive and just back up all your saves (unless its copyright prohibited), any music you have, pictures, and video files.

everything else you can lose: game installs, updates, downloads from the PSN store - since you can re-install and re-download them.

don't go through the hassle thinking that you should back up everything. just back up what's small and important.
