  • Dead Space, truly epic

I just recently began playing this after a friend let me borrow it. It brings John Carpenter's The Thing (the necromorphs), Event Horizon (the ship designs and atmosphere), and Aliens (various references) all rolled into one truly epic science fiction horror game. Tomorrow I will be starting my forth play through on Impossible mode using only the Plasma Cutter, the last 2 trophies I need to get 100%. Saved the best experience/challenge for last.

After playing RE5 and its predecessors and being utterly disappointed by the modern RE franchise in general, I have gained more hope and anticipation in Dead Space 2.

This is one game that truly made me "jump" at times.

    Anyone else feel the same?

I had a blast playing Dead Space.

I've yet to clean out all the achievements in it, but damn did I have a blast playing through it on Hard on my first run. I had moments where I'd just run. I had moments where the enemy count just totally exceeded my ammo count. I had moments where I realized that having only ammo left on the saw blade thingy was a stupid idea when tentacles tries to pull you into rape holes! I had moments where the audio was killing me (Not to mention the lack of audio once you hit the no-atmosphere zones!) Only thing that really annoyed me in Dead Space was actually near the end when I realized I'd almost never used stasis(sp?) for anything involving enemies. I think I used it like... 4 times on enemies through out the game.

Having a solid hometheater setup felt so good when playing this game too.

I'm looking forward to part 2 as well. That game, I must admit, was pretty scary.

What I liked about it is that it made me tense as suspenseful in dangerous situations and I'd literally be standing up when trying to run out a door for survival.

The lighting was used surprisingly well, too. And let's not forget the graphics. The monsters were beautifully animated.

I think we absolutely should not forget the parts that involved cutting off limbs. Something that's just missing in most games these days. Even more awesome how it was totally incorporated into the gameplay.

Are the controls as bad as the demo made them out to be?

I played the demo and decided then and there that I didn't wanna buy the game.

Visceral Games – use to be known as red shore studios – crafted a magnificent IP to go well with other top survival horror games. I remember when I first played it at the preview event with the press at London, me and my friend met some of team (sadly Glen was not at the event) and to hear about their own work on the game, and also watching the animated film in the theatre room which was shown for the very first time, I was confident to see EA taking a broad direction on allowing these guys to create a new product, when they have been solely a license studio from the past. It’s still one of the better games to date I have played this generation, and I would recommend it to anyone who is looking to play a tense survival/action horror game there was so much polish and the whole monsters and weapons, then the story and atmosphere, was so good.

They're pretty much RE controls. I think you can adjust them but, honestly,it felt pretty simple to get into the swing of things for me.

I do love Dead Space, and I think it was pretty good all the way through. I know some folk feel the environment was too samey, but they felt different enough to me to indicate where you were in the ship. Each section had a certain flavour, I felt. There similarities between them, of course, but I think that was deliberate...the Ishimura was a sixty year old mining ship, not a luxury vessel, so using the same parts isn't surprising.

There were a few bits I would have liked to have seen done a little differently. Since you could control Isaac in the cutscenes it would have been nice to have some controls over his reaction to events, having him show grief, disinterest, whatever you wanted. Maybe even having it impact on the ending. And I did feel the scenes set on the second ship were slightly wasted, in that they could have done something quite different and instead it was a bit too close to what had come before, despite the grav plates and such.

Overall, though, a superior horror game. The Necromorphs, despite there silly name, are an intimidating enemy that does require some skill to defeat and, more importantly, are something a little different. The scare tactics, at least for me, were pretty damned scary in places. I never felt safe, and that was a good thing. The backstory was probably a bit ambitious but through the game and the various resources (comics and movie) you get most of it.

It would have been nice if Stasis was more important. I think I mostly used it on brutes so I could get behind them, but it was a nice little extra in the gameplay.

Playing it at the moment. I only really get a chance to play games on weekends - so I'm going pretty slowly. After about 3 weeks this weekend I just passed the asteroid shooting mission... Pretty shit that bit. Hopefully there's no more of that. The atmosphere is great. The controls are servicable - no complaints from me there. So far, the whole plot seems to be one string of fetch quests after the other, but there are some hints of something more going on, so I'm looking forward to continue playing.

In a few parts it can be a little confusing where to go or what to do, but you can just look at the objectives in the menu to find out what to do or where to go, but probably could have been a bit clearer in game but I feel.

Yea I also found the asteroid part pretty difficult. Awesome game, great story/atmosphere 10/10. For me there wasn't too much replay value though, than again I loved SH2 and I don't ever want to play it again because it creeps me out, which is a good thing
I'm really looking forward to the Wii Prequel, but even more excited about the sequel that will have to come out sooner or later.

I think Dead Space is easily one of the best games to come out this generation. I thought the game was brilliant in every aspect. I loved the lighting, and the use of sound and atmosphere was terrific.

The only part I didn't like was that one mini game where you shot the asteroids with a mass driver canon. But other than that two minute segment it was perfect.

The stalker Necromorph was really cool as well.

I agree with this a lot. I hate how games are getting more and more realistic in terms of graphics but then you shoot someone with a rocket Launcher and it does nothing to them. Gore and at least dismemberment should be a mandatory things now.

I hate how RE has no gore anymore, it's sicking and disgraceful to show a person being killed but have no physical damage appear on their body.

The controls are RE except you can walk while you aim. No difference at all.

If you can't play Dead Space cause of the controls, well better stop playing RE then as well.

Buy the game it's one of the best Ive ever played.

I remember a part in Dead Space where I was going down this dimly lit corridor, and I saw the shadow of something behind me on the wall, and then the lights went out.

Hated the stalker necromorph. God, what an annoying prick.

its the greatest survival horror game of the seventh generation (BioShock isn't survival horror, it just adapts elements to it) to me, and its made be EA, another thing to give a sarcastic look at.

it lacks replay value, there's not enough to do in it after you've complete it except go back through it again on a higher difficulty - which isn't that hard. i played Impossible mode with only the default gun (Plasma Cutter).

I thnk it is the onlly survival horror game of this generation that trully scared me (though I played the demo of FEAR 2 and it seem reaaaally scary), it feel like there was a lot of efort put into it, like every detaile is carfully done, it is really great and everyone should give it a try

One of my favourite games of this generation for sure, totally awesome game. EA did a sweet job in sticking it to those who're quick to put the boot into the company.
