I gotta agree with everything Jill's Boob just said there. Except, I also think Dead Space had much more fun gameplay than RE4 too.

I think Dead Space trumps RE4 and certainly RE5 in every category imaginable.

I don't think Dead Space was scary, although it had some unnerving moments. But RE4 and RE5 weren't scarier. RE4's regenerators did scare me more than anything in Dead Space though, but I've never liked them. They shit me up. RE5 just.. wasn't scary. Not at all. As a general game, Dead Space is scarier than RE4 and RE5. For me, personally though, the regenerators scared me the most out of anything in all three games, but the invincible monster in Dead Space comes quite close.

Looking back at my previous post - I don't mean for it to sound so matter of fact. I know opinions vary, but I can't emphasize enough, from my vantage point, that Dead Space (while not as fun as RE4/RE5), has a much scarier atmosphere and deeper game narrative.

Nope. RE4 heavily influenced Dead Space. RE4 has a quicker pacing full of more fun, though 100% mindless, action. And RE5 has the same style, only with an AI partner/co-op second player for shared fun.

I'll give Dead Space the edge in atmosphere and story, but fun factor/variety of weaponry/variety of enemies goes to RE4/5.

That's a better way to say the point I was trying to make. Unnerving. None of the games we're debating here are scary per se, but overall IMO Dead Space is far, far more unnerving. Plus, the level of trepidation is spread out over the course of the game.

Influenced yes. But I think Dead Space improved on every aspect. While I think RE4 would come close in fun factor. I found RE5 a chore to play. I just hated it, it was boring to play and it bothered me. Everything about it bothered me. I guess it's personnel preference, but there was nothing fun about RE5 for me. Except for that one part with the Lickers and the draw bridge. But that's one scene in the entire game.

I found Dead Space to be very very fun and rewarding to play through however.

RE5 probably had more enemies, but I think that Dead Spaces enemy's were more imaginative and fun. RE4 had crappy enemy's to except for the Regenorators.

Weapon variety, there was certainly more in RE4/5. But every weapon felt the same in RE5. RE4 was better in the weapons department by a long shot. Dead Space had the least, but every weapon was completely different. And weapons numbers never bothered me, only how they worked, the the Pulse Rifles alternate fire was so awesome, and the other weapons like the Ripper were so imaginative and fun to use. Id give it to Dead Space again.

Actually it took a step back. RE 4 had better controls and better "over the shoulder" view while Dead Space had awkward controls, shitty character movements and did i mention that the game is BORING!!!! RE 4 is definetely the better game.

Dead Space is a perfect example of a game that does everything right and has people puring their hearts and souls into it to deliver the most coherent and realistic (in that particular games terms) experience of horror and science fiction, yet somehow (and I have no clue why), its extremely difficult for a lot of people to start playing it and finish it, because theres something off gameplay wise. It is a brilliant game, and it really is a true horror title (I have no clue how people can say they werent scared "at all"), but that little something between the gears, it screws it up. Which is why complete and utter garbage, which main goal is to shoot shit up as fast and as much as possible, prevail... Gears, new RE, a lot of SP mainstream FPS titles (whether or not MP segment is good)...

Well, I know for one that few sit alone, in the dark, with the volume cranked up to the limit on their home theater, difficulty settings to challenge play skills and so on while playing...

A lot of people sit around doing the whole "bro power" thing as they play on the easiest difficulties available (or with some sort of infinity lives activated and/or with two fingers/nerves glued directly to the save/load hotkeys) in a lot of games.

Two guys (or more), sitting around with 50 cent blasting through the boomblaster in the background, drinking beer, high fiving eachother, shouting "SHOOT THAT MOTHER FUCKING STARVING MARVIN ALIEN! YEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAH!", while playing on easy = frightening... but only for those who're not part of it

I sold dead space not too long ago because right after I finished beating it when everyone on THIA was doing the playthrough, I accidently saved over the entire game with a new save...*head slap*. It also pisses me off that it erased the special black suit that was free for a limited time through the PS store . Oh well, I'm going to buy it again soon but I'll be buying one of those badass suits first for this round, anyone tried out the flame thrower and such? Anyways I'm excited about the wii prequel coming up and I just picked up the Isaac figure (the bloody varient) today so I'll post a few pics later.

I didn't do either of those things for any RE or SH game and they still managed to scare me...why should I make a special case for Dead Space?

If a game needs tangible, real-world atmosphere to truly emphasize its horror qualities, then the game itself isn't doing a very good job, is it?

EDIT: Note that I'm not trying to come off as rude (please don't take it as such); I'm just curious as to why so many exceptions seem to be made for Dead Space's validity as a horror game.

^ Question: Do you have "bro" parties while playing dead space? lol I don't think he was saying YOU MUST play Dead Space in the dark and alone, just that many people do sit around with a group of people which really has an effect on the mood of the game. It's like a movie ya know? It's not the same unless you watch it in theaters with your full attention as to when you decide to pop it in with some friends.

I tend to play all of my games alone or, at max, one other person. I understand what he meant by "bro" parties; I'm just saying that alot of people believe if you don't try to up the real-world atmosphere when playing a horror game, that you're not really playing it "correctly".

My problem with that statement is that I don't play most of my horror games like that (sometimes I do; it just depends on when I got the game) and yet every RE game minus 5, as well as elements of the Silent Hill series and some portions of Condemned and Dino Crisis all manage to actually scare me without any sort of mood enhancement.

But maybe I'm just being picky; it is a horror game, even if I felt little to no tension or dread at all. It does a reasonable job of setting itself up regardless of my feelings towards its total lack of danger/scares. It just feels so basic, so uninventively unscary, that I can't understand how anyone could consider Dead Space "truly epic".

To each his own, I suppose.

Thats a good point. On the topic of "bro parties", I watched as my friend played RE3 and it was almost as scary as playing it myself later on. And my "bro party" with "Cold Fear" was the most terrifying videogame experience, with no game coming as close.

We managed to create somesort of odd tea-coffee extract by overboiling it with water in 2:1 ratio (1 for green tea, some expensive, high calibre shit + coffee and 2 for water) and along with it, coupled with cold sweat and 120+ heartbeats a minute, and what really is a really good horror game, we got scared shitless.

Yeah I have the Obsidian suit its really good,I was gonna get the Scorpion suit but got the obsidian instead.

The flamethrower sucks cause it doesnt dismember limbs,The Ripper was fucking awesome lol,Pulse Rifle was meh it was good for when the long tentical arm grabs you and trys to suck you into the hole in the wall.Force gun isnt the best but comes in handy as a side arm,Contact beam sucks I think and the plasma cutter is good if you fully upgrade it.

now the Steam Punk Force Gun (DLC gun) thats a bad son of a gun lol I went through the whole game using that gun, ammo is cheap, and once you use it,your unstoppable,it kicks a brutes ass in 3 shots.
