Sonic The Hedgehog CD

Sonic CD is what IHMO call the quintessential CD-based 2D Sonic game, and the only one of it's type. If that sounds too high-phrased to anyone, its because there really is no other Sonic game of its kind. If I had never played or heard of Sonic CD before during the GEN/MD era, and if I was a Saturn owner waiting for a true Sonic game back in the day, I would have expected the time concept to have shown up in a Sonic 4. I have no idea if that makes any sense, so don't argue with me. So yeah, basically I would have expected such a concept to arise later in time.

For anyone's enjoyment, or if you've absolutely nothing better to do, which was sort of the case with me. I'd like to show my You Tube PEMNAS playthough in order of how I played it. I personally love this game.

The playthrough consists of individual videos, each containing a Zone and a Special Stage between each of them. Also, PEMNAS stands for "PLEASE EXCUSE MY NOOB ASS SKILLS". I invented the term myself. Its created to separate my videos from being called a Speed-Run (its not meant to be one) or a walkthrough. Its really just to show others my average-level game skillz in da game. I know, its probably a stupid little gimmick but I just felt like being creative. Whatever.

I still think Sonic CD is terribly overrated.

I was actually playing through Sonic 1-3 recently (XBLA) and it struck me how poorly designed Sonic 1-2 are too. (Sonic 3 is pretty good)

What bothers me the most about Sonic CD are the terrible bonus stages and the annoying time travel system. It just isn't seamless enough and the game in general just doesn't float too well in my boat.

Love S3&K, though. And, no matter how much I dislike Sonic 1-2 + CD, I can't help but hope that the dude doing the Retro Engine thing gets a deal with Sega for his Sonic CD iPhone app (as that could evt. lead to some hot ass Sonic1-3+CD&Knuckles hybrid, I suppose)

Don't get me wrong, there are games far worse than Sonic 1-2+CD, but... geeze... there is just so much annoying stuff to pick on. From level design, to Tales' annoyingly shitty AI in Sonic 2, etc...

Been watching Speed Runs of Sonic 1 through 3 and Knuckles, im actually amazed how many glitches, shortcuts and sneaky tactics can be exploited to clock faster times.

Although I'd say Sonic 2 was my favorite of the series, nothing beats Icecap Zone 1 in Sonic 3 with the Snowboard, totally blew my mind the first section when I first played it.

To be honest, Sonic CD was the one game I could never either get ahold of, or get around to play, didn't have a Sega CD growing up, and heard the emulation for Sonic CD ISOs on PC's weren't very good so didn't give it a try.

So its actually pretty good to see your playthrough, so thanks :p.

Sonic CD was a breath of fresh air at the time of release the dark,bright,future,present, past choices of the stages was mind blowing at the time and gave more replay value to the formula. Sonic 3 and knuckles is still my favorite sonic and who can forget the outstanding sonic drift 2 on the game gear.

Watching a few of those vids I got confused, for the most part it was the decent original Japanese score but some of the music wasn't right (the title menu, special stage and speed shoes). I looked at the comments for the first vid and the author said "Its from the 520 prototype of Sonic CD. A beta version." so I'll take their word for it.

Anyway, I love Sonic CD, it and Sonic 2 are among my favourite Sonic games of the 2D era. I never had a Mega CD back in the day (couldn't afford one, they were really expensive in the UK) but I was lucky enough to have a friend who did have one so I used to play Sonic CD on his.

Well if you're still interested in playing just look up the ISO, emulation these days for Sonic CD is damn near perfect, hell my Xbox can even play Sonic CD fine. The only trouble is setting up the music but you should be able to find a pack with the music included and already setup to go with a little help from google.
