  • PS3 repair

im tihnking of getting my PS3 repaired or getting a PS2 and replacing my PS3 later. but my biggest problem is that they'll fix my PS3 and it won't play PS2 games anymore.

has anyone had a system that played PS2 games get repaired and no longer plays PS2 games

I had a 60GB fail on me twice and it still played PS2 games after repair. I don't see why the backwards compatibility wouldn't work.

Do you know what is wrong with the console Riderkid? I've always went about repairing my own consoles unless it was CPU/GPU related and needed to be replaced. I find that the laser and motor usually always go first.

Perhaps this is the Sony version of the RROD? From what I have read the light turning green, then yellow and then red may indicate an overheating issue. One article claimed it could be the hard drive, I'm not sure if a PS3 will boot without a hard drive installed but it is worth a check to see if this is the issue. Anyway, with any luck Sony may be able to fix the issue and you won't lose your PS2 compatibility.

Naw, the PS3's RROD is the Yellow Light of Death. That's more common.

So it was the hard drive? If so the PS3 takes a standard laptop hard drive and they don't cost that much. I'm pretty sure almost any drive will work and can be bought much cheaper than $150.

Get a larger hard drive. A 200 gig beastie. Then if it does turn out to be that fault, well, at least you've juiced up your hard drive and won't need to upgrade at a later date.

I don't think you understand what I'm asking you to try.

Remove the hard drive and boot your PS3, if it works then all you have to do is replace the hard drive, which is much cheaper to replace. If the console still doesn't work and PS2 compatibility is so important to you then you are going to have to fix it yourself or send it to someone that can. In your case if Sony can't guarantee a console with PS2 compatibility then Google a repair shop that can help you. Sorry I can't help you any further but this is something your going to have to look into yourself unless someone here on THIA knows what is going on with your PS3. You could also try and ask on Assembler forums but be prepared to give more detail. I've repaired so many console and they always end up being the simplest of things sometimes.

Anyway to help one last time I found this on a Yahoo answers page

The problem could be two things. I work at a store and me and my buddy do 360 and PS3 repairs cheaper then Sony's $150 dollar repair. First once you turn on the console from standby the front should have a solid green light. (take all discs out). If the light keeps blinking and u cant get to your main menu (the one with options like games movies etc.) Then that indicates that your system is experiencing a hardware failure.

Turn the console off by holding the front for 10 seconds. Once the console is on standby by turn it off from the back. Disconnect all cords from the PS3. On the end with stickers there should be a little rectangle box to open and get your hard drive (read the manual and remove the HDD). Once the HDD is out reconnect all wires. Turn the PS3 back on manually and hold the on button (in front) until you here two beeps. If you still can't see your dashboard or menu then the PS3 console itself has a system failure. If u can see the dashboard then the HDD has a failure in it. If it is the HDD just replace it with a computer (laptop HDD) HDD. If it is the system then you have to fix it.
