All-new 2D Sonic the Hedgehog in 2010

The new game, code-named Project Needlemouse, will debut sometime next year on as-yet unidentified consoles. So far, the only glimpse of the game has come via a mysterious teaser trailer, which only shows the outline of the new look of the hero at the end.

"Speed returns in an all new 2D adventure built from the ground up" declares the teaser trailer, before showing a blue blur zipping across the screen scooping up golden rings. Accompanying it is a litany of sound effects and visual cues from the first Sonic the Hedgehog, who launched worldwide in the summer of 1991 on the Sega Genesis system.




My gaming fantasy is coming true. Sonic the Hedgehog popped my hardcore-gaming cherry back in the early 90's, and I owned and completed every 'classic' Sonic game ever since -- Sonic 1, Sonic 2, Sonic 3, Sonic & Knuckles, and even Sonic CD. Sonic 3D Blast came out one year, and thus ended the classic 2D Sonic video games. If there's one thing I can say about this announcement: it's about time. With the trash that Sonic has become lately with games like Sonic Unleashed, this is absolutely fantastic news.

Any other 'old school' Sonic fans out there?

That's exactly how I feel about Sonic Stu.
I remember how everyone was so excited for Unleashed, before they showed any of that werehog shit.

I played SA1 on a friends dreamcast - haven't wasted money a Sonic game since.
I've played a little SA2, as well as Heroes and Shadow, because my brother bought them all. Convinced me that I've been right all these years.

To be honest, I haven't paid attention to Sonic in a long time. But I saw 2D, and this caught my attention...quickly.

My son loves Sonic with a passion, so I've played and beaten them all bar heroes (there is an upper limit to the crap even I can wade through) and Unleashed (just beat the secret rings, haven't started yet) but I did actually enjoy most of them, oddly. Maybe I'm just too used to awful controls but Sonic '06 didn't give me too muvh grief and I found it fun.

Still...2-D Sonic would be nice, or even more of the speed bits from unleashed.

Played and beaten them all, but I only *of the next gen games* Enjoyed Sonic Adventure.

2-D Sonic is asking too much when you consider Sega's response to criticism following the werehog in Unleashed *Something about saying they only cater towards their Kids demographic, and 2-D stages taking 10 times longer to program then a 3D battleground stage*

I see they decided to use the first Sonic's project working title "needlemouse" for this coming game. Let's hope that they know what they are doing but I'm sticking to the Sonic Cycle just in case. Sonic Team has always been crushing my dreams with Sonic post Adventure 2

Yes yes yes Sonic is finaly going back to 2D thank god I have waited for this day I loved the old 2D Sonic games they were the best until they made into 3D and the series went down hill.

I don't even care if Tails isn't in this game. I mean, Tails holds a special place in my heart(because when my brother and I would play Sonic 3, he would always be Sonic by way of him being 7 years older and a lot bigger than me , and I would always get stuck with Tails. I soon began to love him), but if this game was just Sonic...that would be totally fine by me.
