  • Rumor: Sony to bring entire PS2 catalog to PlayStation Network

Two days before TGS and another 'leak' involving Sony. Could this be true?

"Sony is planning on bringing the entire PS2 back-catalogue to its digital content platform PSN, MCV can reveal.

The move adds credibility to the many cynics who questioned Sony’s insistence that its decision to remove PS2 backwards compatibility from PS3 was a cost-cutting move and not a strategic one."

Could this be one of the bombs Kaz Hirai will deliver during his TGS 2009 keynote?

The last few 'leaks' to come out of Sony's camp before a big gaming industry event(the PSPgo before E3, and the PS3 Slim before gamescom) turned out to be very, very true...so I'd say there's a bit of good reason to get your hopes up, especially for the people who don't own PS3's with PS2-backwards-compatability.

      Another 'leak.'

As Ray told you earlier, Sony appears to be bringing its entire PlayStation 2 back-catalogue to PSN sometime soon. And while this is hardly surprising, the latest news is that Sony is currently in negotiations to bring a number of Dreamcast games to PSN as well.

Whoah, the first "leak" was already awesome enough, but if that is true---Sony has once again set a NEW precident in Backwards Compatiblity. Hope this is so true, and if so, WAY TO GO SONY! This is how it should be.

Yes Sony, you're ENTIRE PS2 catalogue.

Give over, it's taking you long enough to fulfil that promise on the PS1 front. Cross that bridge first.

            Lolol.
I don't see how this is even possible with how PS2 games aren't even supported.

Yeah don't forget that they copyrighted all Emotion Engine emulation a while ago or something like that so changes are they've cracked the software emulation side of it now. Would imagine it's a patch which will make every game work and then there'll be selected content on the PSN Store.

There's also talk of Sega and Sony collaborating to bring selected Dreamcast titles to the PSN. A Shenmue revival perhaps?!

Yet we still don't have Parasite Eve on the PSN.

Hurry the fuck up and churn out those PS1 games before even bothering to try and get the entire PS2 library up in that shit, Sony.

The emotion engine emulation has been done for a long, long time. That is what powered the original Euro units, along with the subsequent 80gb units and such. Its the GPU that was included in those units, which is not the emotion engine.

Eh, if this is true, I'd like to see Okami, Ico, and Shadow of the Colossus on the PSN. Stat.

And there are some Dreamcast gems as well, but right now I REALLY want the three just mentioned.

Why do I have the feeling that if they do this you'll only be able to do it with downloads of the games, not the discs?

^ That's what the guys at my GameStop said. They figured that if it was true, it'd be download-only. They also said a 250GB HDD was going to be in the works for the PS3 Slim, too... HMMM, put two and two together?

IGN has picked up on the rumor train, giving it more and more steam:

Here are some of the highlights from the document:

                              * Sony's motion controller is set for a March 2010 release date in Japan. SEGA is working with Sony on possible games to integrate motion controls, including Virta Tennis.

                              * SEGA is looking to bring a collection of Dreamcast titles to PlayStation Network, saying they'll provide a list of games that Sony can then pick and choose to have exclusively first before, presumably, being released on Xbox Live.

                              * Marked "confidential," Sony apparently wants to sell "all PS2 titles on PSN (GTA Vice City/Sonic/etc),"

                              * A Bayonetta collector's edition is also in the works, which is to include an action figure. A demo for game is also discussed for around the December holiday, with the game's ship date currently planned for January 5 2010.

                              * SEGA is considering releasing full Japanese games in a special import store on PlayStation Network, including the Yakuza series. These titles would be priced between $10 to $40, and could receive localized menus.

                              * A new "Best of Sonic" Blu-ray disc, with all the old sonic games on one disc is mention. Possibly priced at $99. SCEA is interested in PSN exclusive modes and power ups.
