Plot outline from *gulp* Wikipedia(didn't know where else to find something semi-comprehensive). If you find a better synopsis, please let me know and I'll take this one out:

The plot of Final Fantasy XIII revolves around the fal'Cie (pronounced /ˈfælsiː/), beings created from crystals residing inside them. People who are marked by the fal'Cie for greater purposes are called l'Cie. Each l'Cie has a Focus, a goal the fal'Cie wants him or her to fulfill within a certain amount of time; however, the fal'Cie do not explicitly say what the goal is. l'Cie gain the ability to summon Eidolons (monsters who fight with the l'Cie), but this ability comes with a price: if an l'Cie runs out of time or dies before completing his or her Focus, he or she becomes a monster known as a "Cie Corpse."

Some thirteen centuries ago, a fal'Cie constructed a paradise for humanity: the shell-like city of Cocoon, which floats high above the surface of the world known as Pulse. Both Pulse and Cocoon are maintained by their own fal'Cie. Cocoon's fal'Cie created life forms and machines for its inhabitants to use, and humanity flourished. Over time, the people of Cocoon began to fear for the safety of their world, and they worried that it would be cast down from the sky into the hell that they saw Pulse to be.

In the present day, the wilderness of Pulse has strange effects on people, and the theocratic government of Cocoon, known as Sanctum, quarantines and exiles anyone who has been influenced by Pulse from Cocoon with the help of its mighty army, PSICOM. However, as Snow leads Team Nora in a vain attempt to stop the purging of civilians, the mysterious Lightning fights her way past PSICOM soldiers to find Pulse's fal'Cie with the aid of Sazh. Through a chain of events, these three, along with two exiles, Vanille and Hope, are chosen by the fal'Cie of Pulse against their will to become l'Cie, and with that become enemies of humanity who are tasked with bringing about the downfall of Cocoon.
Cocoon, fal'Cie, l'Cie, Sanctum, PSICOM. Got it? Yeah, me neither. All of it seems to be recycled, though. New universe, new characters, same 'save the world' plot with an evil agency, blah, blah, blah...something different this time, is how the 'main character' duties being split between Lightning and Snow.

    Characters:

    Lightning

    Snow Villiers

    Oerba de Vanille

    Sazh Katzroy

    Hope Estheim

    Serrah Farron(NPC)

So...yeah, aside from an unusually extra-ridiculous-sounding plot and characters with really stupid names, I didn't play FFXI and I quit playing FFXII after about 20 hours(incredibly boring characters, a plot that seemed destined for nowhere)...so I really don't know where to have my expectations for this game. The last FF game I truly enjoyed was X, and the last FF game that I could say was great was FFVIII(different opinions, I know, but these are mine). In short, I just really don't know how to feel about FFXIII.

It's due out in December in Japan for PS3 only, and sometime in 2010 for PS3 and 360 in the west.

Looks decent, the US Dub of the trailer isn't bad, not sure I like Vanilles voice though, sounds flat and dull in every trailer so far.

Either way, the game looks pretty decent, but im sure they'll always be the 360/PS3 war and the what was cut because of the 360 version come launch *probably the option for Japanese dub*

The really sad this is; I absolutely hate their world and character art direction for this installment (Lack of Sakaguchi, Matsuno and/or Naora, maybe? Oddly enough, Versus seems to "look" mostly fine... Agito's got Naora onboard, at least... so that one's probably gonna turn out fine too)

Story seems to be a typical cliché-filled bag of rag-tag pop music rejects (w/their own personal designers) running around, saving the world. With the twist this time being...? That the world doesn't need to be saved, and these guys are the problem... or something...? I dunno... Don't exactly have high hopes. JRPGs rarely are the place to go for new, interesting and original takes on the concept of storytelling.

Will probably be picking it up at some point close to international launch, but I have to say... things like this really never should leave the "Saturday Morning" 8 AM time-slot.

Umm, yeah. It was a really poor choice to turn all Summons into Transformers.

Come on! If they were "just" Transformers, they'd actually have a chance to be pretty cool... Like, giant Battle suits or something (Think "Alexander", basically)

If the fighting system had been "open world"-ish (like Final Fantasy XII, Infinite Undiscovery, various MMOs, etc...), I could see them work a bit better in their "vehicle" form as a double solution (think vehicles, like in most types of games w/optional vehicles, where they can both act as your GTFO-mobile and your mobile combat fortress)

Unfortunately, I don't have high hopes for seeing the Sheva twins being used for something like the bike scenes in Advent Children or the mini-game in FFVII. But, yeah, Mr. Afro turning Ifrit into "The Final and The Fantasy - fal'Cie Drift", Snow summoning Sheva to ride the twins and do "dolphin jumps" on the enemy, and Lightning summoning Odin...to become Odin or something...is just plain stupid and entirely the type of stuff I'd only really expect to see in really bad fan-fiction :/

(By the way, not to further sound like a total hate monger, but am I the only one who finds the character names hilariously stupid?)

if you can go past level 100, this game could be the best final fantasy in years. i'm so sick of the 99/100 cap. its fuckin' 2009, even star ocean: till the end of time, which came out in 2004-2005 had a cap of 255.

To me, the concept of turn based/time based with fixed positions in the battlefield seems like a step back from the semi-real time system in FFXII. I wouldn't have minded them bringing in the gambits again.

I have been really really looking forwed to this game for years I caint wait to see how it turns out im very intrested the whole Eidolon Transformer thing. The Eidolon look awsome the whole idea of haveing them been digital is a new fresh idea for the series doint get me wrong I like the old classic beast but it's get's tireing after a while.

I hope the main Antagonist of the game is better than Vayne that guy was a joke to the series and that's saying alot god and I thought The Emperor and Seymour were bad but at least they had a real plot unlike Vayne but fingers crossed we get a better Antagonist this time around.

I'm actually really looking forward to XIII, mainly because XII was a huge disappointment and also because the entire game looks awesome. I actually quite like the Gestalt Mode (transformer summons) and I'm just really looking forward to it.

And the flame car isn't Ifrit, it's a new summon from what I've heard.

I'll problably play it and quit it after 5 hours, never to boot it again. Been like that with every FF game after Tactics. This series is burying itself in deeper shit with every single new release. It comes as no surprise tho, as they simply pay no atention to competition: I remember reading on Kotaku that they hadn't played Fallout 3 or Mass Effect. Oh Square, you're hillarious.

(By the way, not to further sound like a total hate monger, but am I the only one who finds the character names hilariously stupid?)
SE thinks it's a waste of precious money to actually hire writers, thus the stupid names and no-sense story. Not to mention the character designs. Oh, the character designs. The stupid, overdone, character designs. They should've kicked Tetsuya Nomura out after FFX.
