Its easy to judge a game if you know what to look for. Im not saying GOW3 will suck, however its not impossible to get a valid opinion of the game based purely on vids and some research, without playing the game.

I really would not think much of THIAs community not raving about other games than RE. Battlefield Bad Company 2 is coming out soon and I havent seen a single thread about it yet. Starcraft 2 Beta is going on full speed, no thread whatsoever. The list goes on.

    • I agree with that to an extent. You can judge it loosely, but not enough to place the game above others. I'm a believer that if you're going to have an opinion, back it up. If someone said to me "Uncharted 2 is better" based on what they've seen in videos, then their opinion holds no water as far as i'm concerned.

You'd barely be in a position to judge the game on it's own merits, so i don't think it's fair that people would then compare it against other games.

But i defnitely agree not to read too much into THIA's lack of love for the game. There'll inevitably be games that people here really cannot wait for, but it's a really busy period for games right now so people are just playing through what's in front of them currently.

There hasnt been a game which gameplay I havent been able to judge during the past couple of years. I firmly believe that an experienced gamer can easily "feel" the gameplay once he sees the footage. You can judge AI, scripting, weapons power, motion speed, abilities, even immersion (to an extent). The "play before you judge" only appears logical. For everything else (bugs, story, technicalities) theres internet.

Recent example, I predicted AVP3 to be a disaster a long time ago based on a few vids. The only thing which struck me as a surprise was mouse acceleration, only because I wasnt expecting it, at all. Negative opinion was based on lightning, level design, departure from original content and elements taken from AVP movies (last two showed lack of respect for source material and thus an obvious half-assed, hype-driven design).

Im sure most people can form a very close image to the real thing.

        • Awesome video interview with God of War III Director Stig Asmussen:

EDIT: Oh my COD, more gameplay is being uploaded by the day on YouTube and other spots on the internet. Watched the first minute or so of gameplay before I saw the start of a boss fight with Spoiler:
so I quickly x'd it out. As for what I saw, though...I don't think this game is going to disappoint. It could be even bigger than any of us thought. Absolutely incredible stuff on the way.

          • Here's a partial list of the Trophies for the game:

            Spoiler:

The game has a total of 36 trophies, and only 18 are listed as the remaining 18 are hidden for being story-related, spoiler-ish.

              • Interesting comparison pic here:

Ignoring that the second pic is off screen, quite a bit of difference from the E3 demo to the final build, no?

                • Wow... yeah, heaps. Kratos looks more.... human... in the second image. Amazing what just about 10 or so months can do.

                  • Yeah, he really does look a lot better. And I played the GoW3 demo tonight(like I do pretty much every day nowadays ) and was like "wow, Kratos looks REALLY good here." And he's gonna look even better on launch day. What Sony Santa Monica has achieved visually here is pretty special.

                      • I've had a PS2 for years, and I've never really been interested in these games, or even action genre. I tried DMC and didn't like it so I sold it off pretty quick. My brother spent hours playing Ninja Gaiden on his Xbox. I tried it and it just didn't click with me. Different strokes for different folks.

I must be the only PS3 user with absolutely zero interest in GOW3, GT5, FF13 and MGS4.

And Master of Stars is right - there's heaps of huge titles/series that there suprisingly aren't threads for. I guess if someone cares enough they'll make them.

                        • I don't really care anymore about who on this site is excited about the game or not. It seems like the rest of the gaming world is excited for it, so I was just a little bit surprised to see that not many people here had interest. At the end of it all, this will end up being one of the most epic gaming trilogies of all-time, no matter who plays it -- although I also get the feeling that this will sell a lot of copies. Bottom line is, there's eight days left until it comes out and I really can't wait anymore.

                              9.3 from IGN

God of War III is a great end to Kratos' console trilogy. It's not perfect, with some uneven storytelling and progression here and there, but it's still a fantastic overall package. The combat is stellar once again, it's bloodier than ever, and it is at times the best looking game ever released.

Whether you're in a cramped cave or riding on the back of a furious Titan, the visuals in God of War III are stunning. The ease with which the camera zooms in and out during epic battles is jaw dropping, but it's the attention to detail that puts this game over the top. Kratos is animated with such painstaking care that it is striking at times. While riding atop a lassoed Cerberus, you can see Kratos' legs and arms flex with each step as he desperately tries to corral the wild beast, hanging on for dear life. The same care is given when you're swimming underwater, taking flight with Icarus wings, or ascending a flight of stairs, and it's a marvel to see how lifelike Kratos' movements are. This care is transferred to the creatures and gods you fight as well, making the battles feel more personal and the impact more painful. The lighting effects are equally stunning. Torches flicker realistically on surfaces and characters, creating an eerie effect. And these technical wonders are further enhanced by an artistic touch that gives every section of this game a unique look that is a joy to stare at. God of War III is simply gorgeous.

It risks being a game you'd play once and then move on. But it is a game, more so than any I've played in a long time, that feels unforgettable — unforgettable minute after minute. This is a game that is so mighty in its expression, so loudly in your face, so boldly an advertisement of the power of the PlayStation 3, that it leaves its mark, punches its impression in your memory and seems too good to chuck. This game shows off and gets it right. It is an Olympic achievement, worthy of Kratos' burning energy.

                              10/10 from VideoGamer

This is a video game developed at the very highest level and takes what I thought was possible to new heights.

                              5/5 from G4TV

It's a fun feeling when a game causes the player's mouth to involuntarily open in a slack-jawed expression -- hopefully hidden from any outside observer -- as one is caught up in the creativity on display. God of War III is an achievement on all levels. It immediately becomes the standard-bearer for the genre and a monumental conclusion to the series.

                              10/10 from GamesRadar

While not a huge leap forward for the franchise, God of War III refines its already-fun gameplay to near-perfection while delivering the clever puzzles, high production values and pure, rage-fueled brutality fans expect. Add a memorable cast of characters and buckets of gore, and Kratos’s last adventure is also his best yet.

GOW III is an achievement on all levels. It immediately becomes the standard-bearer for the genre and a monumental conclusion to the series.

What it does do, however, is to provide some of the most engrossing combat and visceral action the PS3 has to offer - presented expertly.
