    • I don't think I've seen anything lower than a 9 out of 10 yet.

EDIT: Another 10/10, this one from Destructoid.

Without question, God of War III sets the new gold standard for action games, clearing and then raising the near-impossible bar that was set by its previous installments. For many years to come, this will be the game by which all others in the genre are compared, and I suspect we won't see anything like it for quite some time. If God of War III was the reason you bought a PS3, your purchase has been justified and then some. If you're looking to show off the power of your console, this is your new showcase -- it's an experience that simply can't be missed.

      • I'll probably pick it up used after the price drops. The first two were okay, but not great.

          I have.

          8.5

Lowest review I've seen. Kotaku's taken reviews from GP before, so I wont be surprised if this review ends up on their Frankenreview for the game.

Hmm, interesting article. Thanks for posting it. It's good to see a different perspective.

Yeah, after I made my initial post I also read a review that was a 5 out of 10...but it was on a website with an Xbox 360 banner that had a weekly poll asking whether or not you thought Mass Effect 2 would beat Uncharted 2's Metacritic score...

indeed, especally sincel CB: Warped received a 9.1 and and 8.9 respectively, only .2 less and .1 less than this game.

but IGN' is so full of shit on there scoring. according to their UK review for FFXIII, FFXIII has scored equal in graphics, equal in representation, .5 better in sound, .5 less in lasting appeal, and 1 less in gameplay, yet it receives an 8.3 compared to an the 9.4 for GoW3's UK review.

the funny thing is, is that the overall sum of the score for FFXIII's UK review, is .5 more than the U.S. review for God of War 3. BUT, IGN doesn't base their scores on the 5 categories, but yet on the overall itself. so funny i think. it doesn't mater if 2 games get all 8s in the same categories, one is gonna score higher than the other because that's how great IGN is.

              • A couple of 8's have popped up on Metacritic, mostly from Euro outlets.

At first this made me think for some reason the PAL product was faulty given comments in the Gameplanet one, but then again there are places like CVG, Eurogamer and various Italian, German, and Spanish reviews that are in the 9's so I doubt that.

Heck even the OUKPSM gave it only 9/10, which says something.

The controversy over these reviews is matched only by the infighting by reviewers wanting to justify their comments on FF13's linearity and non-town communities. :p

                • So it's pretty special when the 8's and 8.5's are outliers of the group. Generally speaking, this game is reviewing fantastically across the board -- and why should we be surprised? The first two games were equally critically acclaimed, and this is one of Sony's big trump cards. Rumors floating around the internet that the game's budget was somewhere around $40 million.

                  EDIT: Here's the link -- $44 million.

The simile of GOW to CB or Spyro was moot to begin with, and comparing scores of two different reviewers for games that are released nearly 12 years apart hardly does anything. CB and Spyro's IP's were and still are owned by Universal, so they were divorced from their original developers (little studios by the names of Naughty Dog and Insomniac), and the quality has gone down the drain for more than a decade now. They were handed off to any willing studio.

GOW is one of Sony's flagship IP's, with nearly 10 million units shipped across merely 3 SKUs so far (GOW 1&2 and Chain of Olympus). Overall, and per SKU, it's actually the most successful action series out there surpassing the likes of DMC or NG (both preferred as far as action alone goes). If the franchise goes away, it would be Sony's or Santa Monica Studio's choice down the road.

EDIT: $44 million seems to be in line with most titles out there, assuming it includes various marketing costs.

The video goes over things like framerate and the pics show off lighting and textures. Pretty stark differences.

EDIT: And here's a sneak peek of two commercials for the game that will start airing next week!
Hi everyone, It's been fun to watch all the speculation on whether or not God of War III would get its own spot with Kevin Butler. The answer? Of course, how could it not? We've been looking forward to the launch of God of War III for some time now (as you all have) as [...]

The Kevin Butler one is pretty brilliant, if you ask me.

Even though I don't like hack n slash games I really enjoyed this, especially the boss battles. Fans of the series will definetely appreciate it more than me.
