  • Game Sales of '09

The verdict is in: while Nintendo dominated the video game market in 2009, it missed out on the top spot.

Instead, it was the Xbox 360 version of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare 2 that sold the most, according to retail tracking firm NPD Group. Figures from the game's publisher indicate the blockbuster war shooter sold nearly 6 million copies in 2009, a feat that's all the more remarkable considering the game didn't release until well into November. Modern Warfare 2 was also the eighth best-selling game of the year, although on the PlayStation 3 rather than the Xbox.

Beyond that, the year belonged to Nintendo. Seven of the year's best sellers were Nintendo games -- six on the Wii, and one (Pokemon Platinum) on the DS. Aside from Modern Warfare 2, Halo 3: ODST was the only other non-Nintendo entry, charting at 9th place.

And I'm sure Nintendo also leads the pack on amount of stock collecting dust or in the discount bin. I don't hate the Wii, but I only own 3 titles for it. Whenever I look out amongst the titles for sale, I see a plethora of titles preceded by the words "family," "imaginz," or "we." It makes me feel bad for the consumer who more-or-less doesn't know better about shovelware.

Nintendo needs to institute some serious quality control - or not, since they still keep raking in the cash - as most of their third party software is utter rubbish.

In fact, recently there is a rumor that Target and Best Buy are planning to refuse shipments of the Wii minigame compilations.

The Wii is marketed toward the typical "family with little kids" demographic, so of course it's going to have the most shovelware.

Wow, the PC games list is sad :/

The Sims, WoW, The Sims, WoW, some_other_game, WoW, The Sims...

It's not that I diss those games (I've used to spent lots of hours with The Sims franchise) but c'mon; an expansion pack and even a five-years-old game with two add-ons packed together sells more than a great brand new RPG like Dragon Age?

I guess it's because The Sims and WoW are two established franchises that already have quite a large fanbase.

Additionally stuff like Dragon Age is available, like most games these days, on multiplatform - which, regarless of tradition of this type of game being a PC staple, still lowers the chances of selling higher numbers on PC when people have more than one platform to pick from.

and the sad thing is, is that a majority of the people only buy Nintendo 1st party titles. i mean, there's more to 1st party when it comes to a console.

this is why i like the gamecube so much better, because the 3d party support had actual quality games.
