You won't discredit it...but you won't give Wolfenstein it's proper title either? Ok then.

You saying "Without Mario 64 blah blah blah" is just akin to saing "Without the first racing game we wouldn't have Gran Turismo".

no, i said without Mario's take on the the full notion of a 3D engine, we wouldn't even see something like GTAIII. genre has nothing to do with it.

Well that's just as ridiculous hahaha

Back on the subject of GTA anyway, cause it would crash the forum if i went through every other piece of shit that's been spoken in this thread....

What do you think you're achieving by always recycling the opinion line? I never said i spoke for everyone else either.

Er... yes, back on topic (if anyone still cares).

GTA3 is a great game, although I much preferred Vice City, San Andreas and Vice City Stories (probably the most underrated game in the series).

But a lot of people seem to forget about Driver 2. This was the first game (that I played) that played like a 3D version of GTA. Driver 2 was GTA in 3D, before GTA went 3D, with GTA3...
You can get out of the car and run around on foot and carjack any other car on the road. I especially enjoyed the 'Free Roam' mode: just mucking around and getting chased by cops. And it played and looked great... and was a PS1 game!

I also have to agree with Carnivol, about Saints Row 2. I bought the game because I wanted more GTA and I felt kinda betrayed by Rockstar for going exclusive with Microsoft, with the extra content (GTA has always had it's roots at Playstation and I've been a passionate fan since the first game). I was expecting an inferior GTA clone. It is inferior to GTA4 in many ways and 90% of the game does rip off GTA but it also does many things better.
Niko, Tony, CJ and company are pretty cool but they simply can't compete with my very own character. Being able to customize everything about my character, including the gender and voice, and then see MY character in all the cutscenes, was brilliant.
Unless Rockstar introduce a similar amount of customization in the next GTA, I think I'm gonna be more excited about SR3 than GTA5.
San Andreas and Vice City Stories introduced a lot of fun customization but sadly, those ideas were dropped for the latest game. They took back the control and forced you to do it their way. Their way was great and I loved GTA4 but SR2 took more risks and let the player create and control a lot more and IMO it payed off.
I've always wanted a kind of GTA/SimCity hybrid game and Saint's Row appears to be heading more in that direction than GTA currently is.

Saint's Row 2 is an unashamed GTA clone. That said, it's immeasurably more fun than the garbage that was GTA IV. The GTA IV DLC is coming to PS3 and PC soon, but I got so sick of GTA IV that I didn't finish it, and have no interest in the extra episodes.

GTA III has won it's place in history. I played it after Vice City, so I missed the inital impact, but I could certainly see the appeal.

Driver 2 is indeed a great game but apart from hijacking cars your character can't do anything else.

Even if I want to I can't play the game because of the shitty controls. I guess I should give it a shot on PC.

Speaking of shitty controls... I know cars behave absolutely terrible in a strange way in Saints Row 2, but Jesus do they behave terrible in GTAIV too. I dunno what happened there. I understand that they wanted to create "realistic" vehicle handling or something, but there's nothing realistic about how the game always feels like you're Sunday Driving with your grandmother, but sometimes have the physics of driving five times as fast as your actual speed.

I'm just hoping Volition will incorporate GeoMod 2.0 (or 3.0?) in any evt. Saints Row 3
('cause Red Faction: Guerrilla totally changed my mind on how to follow "the rules" in games.)

Yeah but the problem with Driver 2 is that it was a crappy sequel to the first Driver title, which was exceptionally awesome in it's time. And that's why no one remembers it (added probably by the fact it came out in the end of the PS1's life and the 2 other terrible sequels that came after it).

The original just had great controls and was fun to play in both story and free roam. I loved doing jumps down the San Fran hills, and pulling donuts in the car park, and going on awesome Cop car chases that felt straight out of a 70's Hollywood film.

The sequel lost that feeling for an attempt at going to serious with a over the top drug plot IIRC and those poorly integrated on foot sections (where the main character walked around like he had a carrot up his ass - something Rockstar made fun of in GTA3's "Two Faced Tanner" mission). For a game called "Driver" it wasn't really that good for it unlike the original. So much so that they tried to refocus back to the driving after it and Driv3r failed when they made Parallel Lines.

GTA III was a great game and reminds me of my high school days as does Resident Evil. I remember I was the first to have GTA III and everyone wanted to come over to my house to play it. I thought Vice City was better and made just enough improvements. San Andreas was ok and thought there was just to much going on in the game for it to be fun. Maybe I just got bored with it after a while. I have yet to play GTA IV and really don't have the desire to.

But that dosn't change the fact (?) that it was the first game to let you drive and run around a large, open world city, in 3D... Running around like you've got a carrot up your ass, is still 'running around'.

I agree the original Driver was a fantastic game. I'll always remember the final mission. I tried it so many times before giving up and considering it ridiculous and impossible. Then a year or so later, I loaded it up one day and beat it on one of my first attempts (not sure if I just got lucky or if my skills had improved).
I think you're being a bit harsh on old Driver 2. I thought it was pretty good and had a lot of fun with it. But we all have different opinions.
Driver 3 and Parallel Lines were disappointing. I don't think many people would argue about that.

I probably am being harsh, but the general reason why is Driver 2 clearly didn't have that walking around thing planned at the beggining which is why it's so poorly put in there.

Well to be fair I can't be 100% on that, but I would not be surprised if it was added in half way into development given how it works/is implimented.

I'll give it's credit where credit is due, it did what the top down GTA's did into 3D, but it still was limited and I'd still have rather played GTA 1 or 2 than the on foot stuff in Driver 2.
