If you want platformers in the vein of old-schoolness, definitely check out the Ratchet and Clank series. It's a magnificent blend of platforming, outright action and hilarious dialogue. Insomniac Games has been like the EA of the action platformer, chugging these things out almost annually since 2002. Except unlike EA, their games aren't just more of the same with a fresh coat of paint. They may follow the same general format, but they always add more to do, easter eggs to find, insane weapons to use and of course... the Insomniac Museum to peruse.

I can safely say that out of eight Ratchet and Clank entries, each one has been above average (yes, even Ratchet: Deadlocked ). However if you aren't willing to hunt them all down, the top three major ones to find are, in order of importance:

    With a PS3/PS2:
    1. Ratchet and Clank: Up Your Arsenal (MUST HAVE.)
    2. Ratchet and Clank Future: A Crack in Time (I loved the new solar system hub world, and the little platforming moons were loads of fun)
    3. Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando (this takes place chronologically before Up Your Arsenal, in both storyline and release date. Amazing fun though.)

    Without a PS3/Just PS2:
    1. Ratchet and Clank: Up Your Arsenal
    2. Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando
    3. Ratchet and Clank: Size Matters (ported from the PSP. Haven't played the PS2 version, but if it's as good as the PSP version then it should be great fun).

A warning; as a rule we don't allow talk of downloading of ROM's here. Capcom legal loves us and keeps an eye on us.

On the other hand, there is a freeware version of Doom out there...

Those make you feel oldschool? Really? They "just" came out.

Now, if you would have mentioned the original GTA...

Well if you like in some way Final Fantasy, Silent Hill and Resident Evil then I recommend Koudelka. Its like those three's perverted offspring.

Fear Effect 1 is pretty awesome as well. Not to mention Parasite Eve (only played the first area of it as my brother had it on import) and Parasite Eve 2.

And don't forget about poor old Regina. Dino Crisis 1 and 2 are a must.

I think the US Dino Crisis came with a RE3 demo. The UK version did not.

Its not a walk in the (jurassic) park. But its a fun game once the puzzles start to make sense. Its pretty much what RE1 (with hunters) or RE2 (with Lickers) would have been if there were no zombies and the selected bow on a constant respawn rate, well there always seemed to be plenty of Dino's around.
