It's a video game machine, for Christ sake. Sony will have to fix the issue in some form, or risk profits; thus it'll be remedied soon enough. You may lose data or you may not. There are worse things in life to cry over.

Yet some people are acting like this catastrophic event makes for a horrible 2010 already. I bet the people in Haiti and Chile would disagree with you.

It's not the of the world by any stretch, but it is damned annoying. With the ammount of cash I've poured into the console, games and accessories I feel I have a certain right to be pissed off that for now I have the worlds most expensive pile of paperweights. Hopefully it'll be fixed, because I can't easily afford one of the brand new ones I"d have to buy.

Wow this totally sucks, not too long ago I had a fat PS3 though it fucked up on me but now I have slim thank god too. I would throw a fit if this happened to me.

Not to knock your taste in paperweights, but I can sell you a much much much much much more expensive one if you like!
Mine still plays videos and things.

Seriously, this isn't the end of the world folks. Go outside of something...?

Official PlayStation Blog for news and video updates on PlayStation, PS5, PS4, PS VR, PlayStation Plus and more.

We’re aware that many of you are having difficulty connecting to the PlayStation Network this evening. Those of you with “slim” PS3s (the 120/250 GB models) appear to be unaffected.

Know that we have narrowed down the issue and have engineers working to restore service even as you read this. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you, and genuinely appreciate your patience while we work to resolve this.

In the meantime, you may want to follow our Twitter account for the latest updates.

This is some seriously intriguing stuff. The internet on my PS3 still works...if I go to the Internet Browser on my 60GB, I have full functionality. I can also use System Update(which tells me I'm updated to the current version, of course), so the problem is not with the internet and it is most definitely a hardware-related issue. I'd expect a firmware update of some kind some time today...

LOL for only a few days since desparate escape is to be released and not to mention GoW3 and my anticipated wait on FF13.

Though I hope this issue won't last long despite me having slim ps3 so I'm just gonna play it safe.

I've been seeing it everywhere on the internet when I got back (had a nice little trip seeing friends). And "Holy sweet Jesus", what the fuck is going on?! Glad I've not used my PS3 in a while so at least I can avoid applying the update.

Damn Jon, that's bad news about your Heavy Rain stuff. I am going to play mine later today when Emma gets back from work. Hopefully I can still play this without requiring for the OS to update in order to play this. Trust in Sony's magnificant work when it comes to OS updates. God bless them!

Haha, this situation is anything but tidy. I began last night thinking the servers were messed up and they'd have a fix in a few hours, to finding out that they had somehow screwed up millions upon millions of PS3's. I wasn't surprised to wake up today and see no fix yet. This is not just a quick-fix kind of issue...but it does seem like something that can be fixed via a firmware update. I hope.

Yeah, I haven't tried playing any games. If you try to play a game, odds are the trophy/save data for that game will be affected.

From my understanding slim's aren't effected, so you should be safe.

Personally I'm not at all interested in DE, GoW3 or FF13, but I can't see this being a massive issue. I don't have any doubt that it's all hands on deck at Sony, and everyone's doing overtime. It's midnight in Japan now, and I bet alot of people will be pulling all nighters to get this shit sorted.

It costs them money, bad press, and devs and publishers won't be happy if it effects their customer's games and DLC. Publishers would be livid if they had to delay big titles (like GoW3 or FF13) because of this.

If you have a 120GB/250GB Slim, you shouldn't have any issues. And to be clear, even if you have a 'phat' PS3, you can turn on you system and not have any data-loss issues. It shouldn't blow up if you turn it on. If you're affected, you simply won't be able to sign into PSN -- take this as a warning to NOT try playing any games.

If I were you, I'd test it to see if I could get online. Slims seem to be immune from this issue.

Here's the interesting question, would the operating system on the console allow for the update to install and work correctly once done? Because seeing this being a calender coding problem, I am concerned if how the updates are applied internally that it could cause fucks on the syetem. This shit is no good.

It seems to be the interal clock invalidating the online data.

I can boot uncharted 2. Can't run AvP (and I only got it a few hours ago ) - because it can't sync trophies.
I can't boot flower because it can't verify the user data.

So I'm really curious as to why these games work when the PS3 isn't connected online? Hypothetically, if I was playing last week and my PS3 wasn't online and I put AVP in, it would see that it can't sync trophies, ignore it and then boot just fine. So the PS3 must have a way to know that being offline isn't an issue. There's probably a check against the internal date system or something which is where it's crashing.

It's not an update that's crashing the consoles. There's no update to avoid installing. It seems to be when the consoles hit 28th Feb 2010 that they crash. And this is all from the internal clock. However, as Rombie said last time, with he and I being in NZ and Australia respectively, ours should have crashed first. Mine hasn't been on in about a week, but he confirmed that his was working fine, and worldwide they crashed at the same time. So it's probably a check that the PS3 does with the Sony internal clock.

All that people can really do is wait for a patch.

That's the thing. Sorry I haven't said this earlier...but if you adjust the system clock manually(since it wont let you update it via the internet), you might be able to play singleplayer games(have read conflicting reports of this), but you still won't be able to connect to the PSN.

Alright, I gotta go to class. I'll be back in a few hours when hopefully all this stuff has blown over...

Cheers. I'll have to test it in the morning. It's 2:10am here, so I'm off to bed. But hopefully before the time I wake up there is a fix.
