  • SOCOM IV: US Navy SEALs

Zipper Interactive is BACK! The creators of the first three SOCOM games and MAG are back with the franchise that made them famous. SOCOM IV: US Navy SEALs is slated for a fall 2010 release exclusively on the PS3.

Trying REALLY HARD to keep my expectations in check after the disappointments of SOCOM 3(Zipper) and SOCOM: Confrontation(Slant 6)...but I feel happy that this game is back in Zipper's hands. SOCOM II is still, to this day, the best multiplayer game I ever played, and the thought of the countless hours I played with my best friends is what makes me want to shake and cry like a fangirl. That little glimmer of hope is what keeps me excited. Maybe, just maybe, this game will feel like SOCOM II HD Remix, something that the series' diehard fans have been longing for ever since SOCOM 3's whackness.

I just really hope Zipper has been paying attention to what we want. The general consensus from SOCOM fans is that SOCOM II was the pinnacle of the series. The maps, the hit detection, the game types, everything...it just didn't get any better than that. The hit detection, maps and addition of vehicles in SOCOM 3 really friggin' sucked, in my opinion. My friends and I went back to SOCOM II about a month after 3's release. It just wasn't the same.

Any other SOCOM fans in the building?!

Well, it's kinda funny, but I stopped playing the series after III. I played Confrontation a couple of times and there really wasn't anything...well ANYTHING about it. The only thing I enjoyed was Desert Glory. This is great news because my friend has tried to get me to buy Confrontation countless times. I never saw the point.

I would actually say that I'm more of a fanboy for the first SOCOM in its online prime. Before the I-dub was everyone's nerf complaint in II. Will we ever see a daytime Abandoned again?

Daytime Abandoned was pretty awesome. I always hated the dark as hell maps in SOCOM II...Abandoned, Rat's Nest and Shadow Falls come to mind. Still...those maps were better-designed than anything that comes out these days. Just looking at the list of maps from SOCOM II makes me wanna play it right now. I think the servers are still up?

      1. Frost Fire- Suppression- Alaska (Classic suppression)
      2. Blizzard- Demolition- Alaska (A favorite map of my clan for a long time)
      3. Night Stalker- Demolition- Turkmenistan (Another classic. Sniper's paradise)
      4. Desert Glory- Extraction- Turkmenistan (Huge favorite for clan wars)
      5. Rats Nest- Suppression- Turkmenistan (Cult favorite suppression map. Too dark...still fun)
      6. Abandoned- Suppression- Thailand (Too dark...great layout)
      7. The Ruins- Demolition- Thailand (Awesome map. Another fav for clan wars)
      8. Blood Lake- Extraction- Congo (A personal favorite of mine)
      9. Bitter Jungle- Demolition- Congo (Lag-fest, but still a great map)
      10. Death Trap- Extraction- Congo (Camp-fest for Terrorists, still fun to play)
      11. Sandstorm- Breach- Algeria (Best breach map there was)
      12. Fish Hook- Extraction- Algeria (Probably the most popular SOCOM map ever)
      13. Crossroads- Demolition- Algeria (If not Fish Hook, then this was the most popular)
      14. Fox Hunt- Escort- Albania (Escort! HUGE map, lots of trekking, great setting)
      15. The Mixer- Escort- Albania (I loved Escort...but this map was a pain sometimes)
      16. Vigilance- Suppression- Albania (Another huge favorite of the fans. Rooftop warfare)
      17. Requiem- Demolition- Russia (A bit dark but the battles in the basement were epic)
      18. Guidance- Escort- Russia (Top 5 fav of mine, everyone else seemed to hate it though)
      19. Chain Reaction- Suppression- Russia (HATE HATE HATED when people sniped through the roof)
      20. Sujo- Breach- Brazil (Lol, big-time campers map. Too dark. Still awesome)
      21. Enowapi- Breach- Brazil (Biggest camping map of them all...but the environment was awesome)
      22. Shadow Falls- Suppression- Brazil (Probably my least fav map ever. Too dark to see anything)

I just want there to be no vehicles, custom taunts, victory dances, etc. The stuff that made SOCOM so much fun.

Frost Fire, Vigilance, Fish Hook, The Mixer, Night Stalker, Foxhunt and many others sound delicious, you're right.

Damn those games were good in their prime.

Just saw the trailer, it was pretty weak. Lots of pre-rendered stuff, nothing in-game. Definitely a plain old teaser. It should be up on gametrailers.com pretty soon. We've got a long time 'til this game comes out...we'll definitely be seeing a lot of it at E3, but I'm wondering, what about GDC next week? So far, they're focusing solely on the singleplayer campaign, which is fine with me for now -- but I don't play SOCOM for the singleplayer.

EDIT: Here's the trailer: http://www.gametrailers.com/video/ex...-socom-4/62664 Can anyone tell if the voice of the Commander is Paul Mercier, aka the voice of Leon? He was the voice of Specter in SOCOM II, 3 and Combined Assault, and I really want him to come back.

EDIT 2: Also, can a mod make the title say SOCOM 4 instead of SOCOM IV? I thought it would be roman numerals...but it isn't.
If I constantly see the IV, it's gonna bother me. >_> Thanks.

Gotta say...i never thought Confrontation was all that bad really! I loved the first two on PS2, barely played them online to be honest, just thought they were great single player titles.

I do worry for the series though if little has changed since those days.

So during tonight's Sony press conference at GDC where they unveiled their motion controller, 'PlayStation Move,'(the precision of the device puts the Wii's motion controls to shame), they showed a bit of someone playing SOCOM 4 with the wands. It looks great graphically...but it looks like there's been a cover system implemented for the game, which is something SOCOM has never had. Not sure how I feel about it yet.

Game looks beatiful. I'd imagine they brought in a cover system just for the game to catch up with the times. They might remove it then for the online.

Movement looks super fluid for Move...if we're going to get RE4 Wii Edition-esque controls for more games then i certainly won't be complaining!

                      Sorry to disappoint ya, Carnie-Boy.

                      Here's an...interesting in-depth interview with the game's lead designer:

I can't wait til they stop focusing on singleplayer and Move and start focusing on multiplayer.

                        I really want Recoil 2
"Move" could even work perfect with it too (as it'd more or less allow for a direct copy of the original's controller scheme)

It looks like it'll be alright when played with a DualShock 3. I have no interest in playing it with the motion controls, but since this is a big product for Sony and SOCOM is a big series, they're gonna be marrying the two for the next few months. I can't wait 'til Zipper starts showing some online footage...

It's been a while...but here's an interview with the creative director of the game. Sounds like they're really putting a lot into the singleplayer experience this time around. Still no word on co-op or competitive multiplayer.
