there better be a damn good reason as to why this game is anything over $40 when the original Portal launched for $20 on retail and less for digital distribution.
*sighs* Yes Valve, you made a co-op game, very good Valve, but you did remember the co-op was supposed to be an additional feature to a solid single player experience right? RIGHT!?

Well at least you've kept up on the content in the game.

The game's main segment is still the single player segment (it even has JK Simmons!) but also has a strong coop campaign (with heavy mod support and probably DLC for further missions) so when it comes to marketing this game, you'd rather focus on broadening the audience (people who are more interested in the single play segment would know of Portal 2 already) rather than just spooling the main story of the game.
This marketing makes it seem like its a 2-player only game, even the cover gives that impression! At best it makes it seem like its a 2-player game with a single player mode tacked on as an afterthought. They need to start weaving the two modes together in promotion rather than focusing so hard on the co-op mode.

I think Valve likes to assume their hardcore consumers are smarter then this and would rather just research their games then rely solely on advertisements. Chell is a silent protagonist and not a popular one either. These two bots are the only characters that have enough unique aesthetics and personality to actually be the faces of Portal beyond relying on iconography.
It does make sense since it's "Portal 2" to emphasise the 2-player lets not forget that all the significant videos have shown the singleplayer with Stephen Merchant and the new physics from the rubberised liquid etc I've only seen one video with actual gameplay in coop and it was short too the rest has been full of CG showing us the quirky robots and really re-iterating the portal basics so lets have some faith eh?
It's Valve they may be late but they get it done . . .
They're releasing one of these each week until release. More stupid pushing of the robots and no sign whatsoever of Chell. Picked up a pre-order box in store today, all the screen shots on the back were of the robots too. I know i keep complaining about this but it's a legitimate complaint, if they wanted to make a purely 2-player co-op game they could have done and this would be the perfect marketing for it. For a game that just has it as a secondary option this is wrong, people who don't already know the game will just think all it has is a 2-player mode because they aren't showcasing the single player anywhere near as much as they have the 2-player mode. Marketing is so rarely about capturing current fans interest, it's about peaking their interest and gaining other peoples.
I agree with Rewak, I dislike how they were like "HURR DURRR, CO-OP DUN WORK."
Then when they DO include Co-Op, they have pretty much BASED the game around it.
Like they're pro-campaigning the multiplayer and not single player story.
I had this conversation with my boyfriend yesterday, it kind of annoyed me how the boxart is just the robots, same for the screenshots and trailers.
:/ just my input.
I want to see more Chell, but honestly I can see why valve is doing this because:
A) She cannot talk or interact with anyone besides inanimate objects
B) Spoilers
C) Showcasing the robots helps to separate Portal 2 from Portal 1.
Hell, Chell wasn't even on the box art the first time around. Portal has always tried to be immersive, and by keeping the protagonist subtle, they make it easier to insert yourself into the science.
A) So is Gordan and it doesn't stop him
B) CGI trailers and covers aren't really spoilers
C) In what way? That there's 2 of them?
The cover for the first game featured no character which was fine, putting the robots on the front (and back) gives the impression they are the main focus of the game. If they hadn't put them or Chell on the cover and just had it like the first one it would be a lot better IMO.
Anyway, final 2 Investment Opportunity trailers and finally they show Chell in one, much better than the robots.
She's been warming the neurotoxins but now she's finally here!! I've got it pre loaded on steam to play when I get home in about 5 hours. Is no one else crazy excited about this game?
