Well, when you put it that way it does seems kind of big period of time.

It's amazing to think 12 years have passed since then. I still remember playing my C64 with dedication when I was 3.

I should have said 11 years...yes, I get the year wrong sometimes. Thanks for pointing it out, you unfeeling monsters. Revelling in my mental deficiencies!

But according to the age thing in the Member's List, we do have a member that old.

I stopped playing Deus Ex because the gameplay wasn't good. The game felt like it was a bit too much ahead of it's time. I didn't feel immersed and pretty quickly the game became "I just want to see the ending" kind of a thing. DEHR has it's own set of issues, I find the whole augmentation thing kind of overhyped, as it didn't feel like the choices came with a cost. I ended up not using the augmentations as tactical options (well, you do only have like 4 of them which you access through hotkeys, the rest are passive mods), rather than AI-s inadequacies and level layouts (playing through the game unimmersed, treating it as a puzzle). It got better by the end of the press copy, but it didn't feel as complete. Kind of like Alpha Protocol, in a way.

And then I played FEAR 3 and got a headache.

When people talk about the graphics of deus ex hr, you do know you can use the HD mod or HD render on the unreal engine to have it in HD quality right? I am dissapoint.

Graphics are almost always secondary or tertiary. Half Life is still the best game ever made.

Can't argue with Half-Life being an exceptional game, it really is.

I do think that TF2 is the best multiplayer first-person shooter though.

Oh yes, let's look at the engine with the pretty overwhelming bloom that is constantly, CONSTANTLY broken by the company with updates (usually tends to happen when CSS, TF2 get's an update which then in turn breaks another component of the engine or tools for it and that proceeds to break other things that require it such as Garry's Mod).

Half-Life 2 can't even really be considered better as it's not even actually complete yet. We're still waiting on Episode 3, whereas Half-Life is completed game.

Not only that but graphics go with the time period, and if you hadn't noticed but a lot of companies are trying to go back to the roots of old various bit graphics or lower polygons to avoid strain.

The whole "realistic" graphic view is just a fuckton of uncanny valley constantly and it can actually interrupt multiple elements of a game itself - awkward expressions, movements disrupt the scene, or don't fit with the musical styling for it's soundtrack, it's story driven so even a simplistic approach can drive a message through without every single thing needing to be shiny in terms of graphics.

Not only that, but have you even SEEN some of the stuff that people have been able to do within the Half-Life original engine? (For example, the Dragon Ball/Dragon Ball Z "Earth's Special Forces" mod that is in progress).

The graphics don't make a game, it's a combination of elements that add to it.

Graphics is only icing on the cake, the cake of which is made from a mixture of various ingredients and ONE MAIN ONE IS A FUCKING PLOT.

Seriously, it's no wonder why people that are usually graphics whores tend to support whatever looks the most shiny, is it any wonder why we get the same brown or green washed out, "realistic" shit over and over again?

                        *Bangs head on wall*

I know I'm going to get an infraction, but seriously - after looking over the past couple of pages on the topic and then this post, I just have to say this is some of the dumbest stuff I've read in terms of actual video game quality.

I mean, if games are to be known as a masterpiece or hell, even films it isn't due to one single aspect of it and that's all you're focused on. Graphics.

I mean, FFS... REALLY? So, if there was a game that had an amazing script and a fucking amazing soundtrack, voice acting and the like but it had more "artistic" graphics in that it wasn't the normal "current trend" in the industry, it'd be SHIT?

What is wrong with you mate?

I mean, you could be walking along the street and you stop and look in the window and see this amazing bit of food, it looks like it'd be delicious but when you actually try it, it tastes like UTTER SHIT. This is why you can't focus on a single element and/or aspect when putting something together, whether it be cooking to developing and designing a video game.

gameplay new characters better grapichs is what did it for me
trust me i never said half life 1 was shit i just prefer half life 2 more because it looks better of course the black mesa mod that comes ( if it comes XD they are so slow) but if it should come of course i got no doubt in my mind that it will supass half life 2 but for now half life 1 vs half life 2 i have to go with half life 2.

Half-Life 1 is a lot better IMO. So HL2 had that great E3 preview with awesome physics which even Robin Williams showed up for but the game itself never really made me keep playing. The flow of the first game is perfect as they essentially made the game and then went back and made it again, you can see the effort put into the design.

When I think of HL2 I just think of the different sections, the boring talking section at the start, the boat section, the annoying flying robot sections, the helicopter sections.. Zzzz.. The ravenholm section was good though.

the point is its getting old it was good back then because the grapichs wasent invented like it is today. So of course it was insane good at its time, thats why im saying black mesa can beat half life 2 because it will have our grapichs today
but for now as i said half life 1 vs half life 2 my vote still stands on hl 2

but black mesa has great potential.
