  • Sony's new controllers

    Sony is on the Move.
During an event at the Game Developer's Conference in San Francisco, the company officially unveiled the name of their upcoming Playstation 3 motion control device: Playstation Move. The controller will hit shelves this fall.
"It's fast, precise and accurate," said Peter Dille, Sony's senior VP of marketing. "We like to think this is the next generation of motion-gaming...we're really approaching this as a platform launch."
Sony's response to the Nintendo Wii remote, the Playstation Move system requires both the new wand controller and the Playstation Eye camera to work. Though exact pricing has not been set, Sony confirmed that a "starter kit" of one controller, one Playstation Eye and one game will be sold for under $100. The Move will also be sold as a standalone product or bundled with the Playstation 3 system itself.
The Move packs a ton of tech into its slim controller. A three-axis gyroscope, a three-axis accelerometer and a magnetic field sensor work in tandem with the camera to purportedly provide more accurate spatial recognition than the Wii remote.
That weird little colored sphere stuck to the top? It's not just a fashion statement -- the camera uses that sphere to pinpoint the location of the controller by first detecting the dominant color of the room's background, then setting the sphere to a different color. That helps distinguish it from the environment...and puts on a nice light show to boot.
The company also showed off a "sub-controller" accessory that functions much like the Wii nunchuk device, a small, handheld joystick that lets players control games in a more traditional way.
Sony demonstrated several Move games, including new titles Sports Champions, Move Party and Motion Fighters (working title) alongside integration in current releases like LittleBigPlanet and upcoming shooter SOCOM 4.
According to Dille, Sony sees the Move as the next step for Wii users who are looking to move on to a high-def experience. He's hoping the Move's increased accuracy will work with "core gamers" in addition to the casual fans.
"Virtually every third-party publisher is on board with Playstation Move," Dille noted, although that might be overstating it a bit. Over 35 major publishers have officially signed on to work on Move games, including industry leader EA, who has already revealed that the upcoming Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11 will work with the Move.
Initial reaction has been mixed. Gizmodo was impressed by the SOCOM demo, calling it "much smoother" than similar experiences on the Wii, but considered the swordfighting game from Sports Champions to be only a slight improvement over the Wii Motion Plus.
MTV Multiplayer calls the controller's rounded form factor "much more natural to hold" than its Nintendo counterpart, but also takes issue with its newness -- or lack thereof.
"It's definitely neat, and fun to play, but it hasn't differentiated itself from the competition enough to make it feel "new." Wii Motion Plus with better graphics is a hard comparison to escape from," said editor Russ Frushtick.
Ars Technica agrees, pointing out that "the technology is mature, but it seems like a reaction to the success of the Wii, and not a brand-new experience."
With months to go before it releases, Sony has plenty of time to dial in the tech and announce more games. So what do you think? Are you excited by the Move, or is it just a Wii remote knock-off? Sound off in the comments.

I know it's a rip off of Nintendo, but who knows? Maybe this will actually be a good thing if Sony could actually do this correctly. I just have to wonder whether there will actually be more games made just for the controlller or if it will be compatible with the older games that are already made.

Besides the mysterious "magnetic field sensor", that thing is nothing but a reversed Wii Remote w/motion+ in every possible way. They just swapped the placement of the camera and sensor bar. (The wii is an IR camera w/motion detectors that does stuff in relation to the placement of the sensor bar, while the Move is a web cam that tracks a moving object w/motion detectors)

The GDC presentation was pretty awkward. It was as if Sony tried to copy the Wii reveal in every possible way. The most funny stuff from the live stream on G4 most certainly was the stupid marketing speech. Both the part about "migrating Wii owners", the stuff about the mighty bluray's capacity (such as being able to hold two copies of each game! One for DualShock and one for Move! Man! Controller configs sure takea whole lot of space these days!), Jack Tretton, after the presentation, saying the PS3 had bluray, built in Wifi and "over 50 gigs of technology" and other golden gems.

I'm a 360 owner and one who even withought trying it, fell in love with Natal. I don't like the wii because... i just don't, I find it boring as hell after two days... or one. But this, I actually hated the idea of sony copying nintendo, but after seing videos of GDC I am looking forward to what they'll be able to do, it looks soooo precise and everything, the designe is HORRIBLE, but that's just me. The onlly problem I see here is: what NEW type of game can they actually achieve? i mean, wii has almost all posible types of games using those types of controllers, can precision actually make new experiences in games??
And that is why I believe Microsoft will have the lead with project natal (hahahaha), I know bothe microsoft and sony copyed nintendo on the motion gaming things, but still, natal seems to be a totally new way to experience a game, i can't wait for t!!

Sony likes to steal from Nintendo a lot... Rumble, memory cards, motion controls (funny how they soon announced the Sixaxis would have motion control soon after the Wiimote was unveiled...) some other stuff I can't remember (someone on Gaia showed me all of this, btw, I'll have to ask him for the links and stuff), and now this. Anything that became popular.

                      Hardcore PS3 fanboys: "LOLWIIHAHANINTENDO motion controls r 4 n00bs"
                      *Move is announced*
"Oh my god look at how intuitive and new these motion controls are! They're revolutionary!"

I have all three (systems), and I think I'll be just fine with the Wii's motion controls. The PS Move is just a cheap imitation of the Wiimote/WM+, Sony can't help but steal popular stuff from Nintendo. So fuck that.

Did anyone actually watch them demo some of the games? I have a Wii also, and the Move looks like an improvement on the Wiimote in almost every way. There's no denying that this is a 'Wii HD' situation, and that the whole motion control, 'family gaming' sensation is bullshit. Nintendo has monopolized the 'casual gaming' market with shovelware cutesy bullshit, so I don't see why Sony(and eventually, Microsoft too) can't try and get a piece of it.

The whole "OMG THEY'RE COPYING NINTENDO" argument is really old and stupid. There really is no such thing as 'originality' anymore. Games and companies borrow from other games and companies constantly. I'm not defending what Sony and Microsoft are doing, but everyone is guilty of 'copying' someone/something else these days.

I'll pass on the motion controls as well at least for now but I better get used to it if I want to play the new Zelda game or No More Heroes:Hero's Paradise.

That's a weird way of putting it, I don't see why the concept of a memory card is owned by Nintendo. It's a storage device first and last, and they had been used with computers for years.

Rumble and motion controls are a little more in the realm of "stealing," though rumble isn't exactly a transcendent idea. In retrospect the hype over rumble packs and dual shocks didn't really lead to much, and the feature itself nowadays only seems like a habit.

I'll wait and see with the PSM. SOCOM doesn't look bad with the use of it but I don't really see the point of switching.
