Mini-review:
Someone described Metroid: Other M as "Samus Aran, this is your life" and I agree. You get to know more about the famous bounty hunter. A heck lot more than the previous games. And I bet a lot of fanfiction writers are going to have a lot of new writing material with this game.
The story or plotline has a very Japanese flavor to it, though. The way Samus and the other characters act and behave. It's like something straight out of a manga or anime. For example, giving a thumbs up/down is something so damn relevant in the story that it needed to be explained by Samus herself. I guess Roger Ebert would be proud.
The way Samus acts in this Japanese inspired scenario also affects the gameplay. At the beginning, Samus refuses to use the full capacity of her equipment/weaponry for a reason that many of us westerners would probably fail to understand: she's being loyal to her commander in chief. The guy didn't authorize their use and like an obedient puppy, Samus does as she's told. And that type of over the top honor just seems out of place for most westerners. We think it's stupid... or even sexist. But apparently not to the Japanese. And so we have to deal with it, I guess. To me it was another take on the same plot device of losing your weapons early on and them earning them back later. Just like in Metroid Prime. But whatever. The way it was done here seems a bit silly and cheesy.
More about the gameplay: IMO it's a perfect fit for those of us that started playing using a D-pad and nothing much else. Those that started out with analog controls will probably bitch about not being able to use the nunchuk. I must say that analog is really is not needed the way this game was designed. In any case, I believe most experience gamers will get used to the controls after 30 minutes of gameplay.
The puzzles in Metroid: Other M are not that hard considering that they're mostly based on the local environment. So you just have to keep a sharp eye of your surroundings and you'll be able to move forward with no probs. The generic enemies looked to me like remakes of the NES game. IMO the best thing here are the bosses. This game reminded me of Mischief Makers in that sense. I only played that game for the bosses. And Other M has some very memorable battles in it.
I don't usually like games filled with FMV's but fortunately you mostly get that at the beginning and at the end of the game. With a lot of in-game cut scenes here and there. We're talking about 2 hours of scenes here. But I sort of expected that from Team Ninja.
In short, the game is awesome. Not as good as Super Metroid or even the first Metroid Prime were in terms of gameplay. But it sure is up there among the best overall.
Metroid: Other M Professional Reviews:
IGN: "Metroid: Other M is a huge step forward for Nintendo, a company that’s been reluctant to push story over gameplay. It’s certainly possible that what the Other M team did for Metroid could potentially shape the direction of other Nintendo franchises, but for now this is a great first step" Score: 8.5
(Infamously hard to please) EDGE: "It offers an uncluttered slice of sci-fi action, a singular take on the thirdperson adventure, and a combat system of pared-down beauty. Team Ninja had good material to work with, but the studio’s own contribution is a fine complement indeed" Score: 8.0
GamePro: "(Other M) is not just an attempt to take an established formula to new places: it's an intimate glimpse into the mind of a character that is almost universally beloved but whose personality has, up to this point, been encased in an impenetrable layer of mystery. Other M slices right through the armor and lays out Samus' soul for us to dissect, and while I didn't always like what I saw, it was both refreshing and educational to be reminded that there's an actual human being underneath all that shiny power armor.
This, along with the solid action the game has to offer, makes Other M a worthy addition to the Metroid canon. While it isn't the "instant classic" we're all clamoring for, it is a solid title that deserves to stand on its own merits; in other words, don't unfairly judge it against your expectations because even though it doesn't live up to the high bar that we've set for the franchise, that doesn't mean it isn't a worthwhile experience in its own right." SCORE: 4 stars out of 5GameSpot: "People expecting Other M to conform to the elements that made Super Metroid and Metroid Prime classics may be disappointed at first, but stick with it. This is another great entry in the series, and a refreshing change of pace for the well-traveled bounty hunter" SCORE: 8.5Joystiq: "At first, I wasn't sure that Metroid: Other M would be a proper Metroid game or even a fun one, but as its action intensified over the course of the adventure, it didn't take me long to dismiss the second concern. As for whether or not it's Metroid ... I finished the game with a 45-percent completion rate, and I'm currently going back through the map looking for hidden Energy and Missile Tanks. You tell me" SCORE: 4 1/2 stars out of 51up: "But that's Other M: occasionally nonsensical (and always extraneous) story elements wrapped around generally excellent action and fun abilities. When you introduce more plot, you introduce more room for plot holes" SCORE: 6.7Kotaku: "I was skeptical of Other M. I thought it would not just be inferior to the wonderful Metroid Prime games but to earlier Metroid side-scrollers. I still can't say that it is better than most of them, but it is nonetheless a very good game. It is exciting to play and terrific to look at. It is a master-class in mixing gameplay genres, even though it is hobbled by a bad decision regarding its controls. Anyone with an appetite for classic Metroid combat and exploration will be satisfied with Other M. Those who wish to think of Samus as a grown-up without daddy issues may not be. Still, this is a fabulous Wii game that shows how thrilling it can be when sequel creators choose not to design it safe. This is a brave game, one that players would benefit from experiencing" SCORE: Positive reviewX-play: "It's sexist" said Abbie and "FUCK you, Nintendo" said Morgan. SCORE: 2 out of 5Stuff to remember: Avoid forums if you're having a bad day.

I'm a good bit into it, and so far, I like it but it's not amazing. The first person gameplay feels uncomfortable to me, and the combat gets pretty boring pretty quickly, but I like how they've attempted to bring the classic style into 3D without making it a 2.5D game like Shadow Complex.
I really don't know what else to say. Everyone's going to buy it anyway. Oddly enough, this one feels a lot like Fusion to me, and it's not because of the story ties. I can't put my finger on why, but it's there.

...and yeah, the combat seems pretty repetitive. Almost to the point where this game really isn't much of a challenge (beside the wonky control scheme).
Oddly enough, this one feels a lot like Fusion to me, and it's not because of the story ties.
To me, it's Samus' personal connection to the Metroid race [via storytelling] that make me reminiscent of Fusion. I dunno, like you, I can't exactly 'put my finger' on it, either.
Still, a great game, especially for Samus's first dive into a RPG(?). I wouldn't even know how to classify this game, in terms of overall presentation.I'm a blackstar.

Just completed it... SPOILERS.
The story was okay - I didn't like how all of Samus' triumphs within Super Metroid were essentially cancelled out here by simply bringing them all back in one form or another. And I felt we were robbed the epic Ridley final fight we were promised, nice to see the Queen Metroid from Metroid 2 realised well though.
But all in all - it's the Ridley sequence that sky rockets this. It's one of the most incredible moments i've experienced in gaming for quite some time. I love Ridley - I love his theme, and I was anxious for the moment. People have been complaining like fuck about how Samus reacts in that scene but it was personally perfect for me. She's beat him so many times, even killed him on Zebes and now he's back - again. Her reaction was amazing - and I love they've finally fleshes her out and given her a personality, she's earned it.
But damn - the Ridley theme in this game was absolutely incredible.http://www.projectumbrella.net The BIOHAZARD/RESIDENT EVIL Compendium
