Searched and couldn't find anything for this, so I thought I'd make a thread.
Music is a huge part of gaming. Whether it was the midis back in the NES and SNES days, or the full-fledged orchestral soundtracks of big budget blockbusters today, there have always been songs we've heard time and time again that can fill us with nostalgia, tug on our heartstrings, or even fill us with rage. What are your favorite songs from video games, past and present?
For me, it starts and ends with the Metal Gear Solid series, hands down. Everything from "Mantis' Hymn" to "Father and Son" is absolutely incredible. It helps to have a big-time composer like Harry Gregson-Williams, but even before that, the series had amazing music...save for that whole plagiarism thing.
Mantis' Hymn(MGS1): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eMasLUmBzkc
This is the one song from MGS1 that brings me back in time, 12 years. Feels like it was yesterday I fought Psycho Mantis for the first time, and had NO IDEA how to beat him. I was 9 years old and my brother refused to help me, so eventually I figured it out on my own. The song is so haunting. Couple it with the creepy green-ish hue of the Commander's room where the battle with Mantis took place, and it's truly one of the more iconic moments in gaming history.
"C'mon Mr. FOXHOUND, the Commander is waiting."
Father and Son(MGS4): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=807lT04pdG4
This is one of the most, if not thee most emotional songs I've ever heard in a video game. Even today when I listen to it, I get choked up. It's so beautiful. It brings me back to the first time I watched MGS4's ending, but it also brings me back in time throughout the entire series. It envokes thoughts about my father, and his father...etc. It's serious stuff.
These are just two of my favorites. I have tons more, but I'll just use these two for now, so as to kick off the thread.
