  • Favorite Video Game Music/Songs/OST's

Searched and couldn't find anything for this, so I thought I'd make a thread.

Music is a huge part of gaming. Whether it was the midis back in the NES and SNES days, or the full-fledged orchestral soundtracks of big budget blockbusters today, there have always been songs we've heard time and time again that can fill us with nostalgia, tug on our heartstrings, or even fill us with rage. What are your favorite songs from video games, past and present?

For me, it starts and ends with the Metal Gear Solid series, hands down. Everything from "Mantis' Hymn" to "Father and Son" is absolutely incredible. It helps to have a big-time composer like Harry Gregson-Williams, but even before that, the series had amazing music...save for that whole plagiarism thing.

    Mantis' Hymn(MGS1): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eMasLUmBzkc
This is the one song from MGS1 that brings me back in time, 12 years. Feels like it was yesterday I fought Psycho Mantis for the first time, and had NO IDEA how to beat him. I was 9 years old and my brother refused to help me, so eventually I figured it out on my own. The song is so haunting. Couple it with the creepy green-ish hue of the Commander's room where the battle with Mantis took place, and it's truly one of the more iconic moments in gaming history.

"C'mon Mr. FOXHOUND, the Commander is waiting."

    Father and Son(MGS4): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=807lT04pdG4
This is one of the most, if not thee most emotional songs I've ever heard in a video game. Even today when I listen to it, I get choked up. It's so beautiful. It brings me back to the first time I watched MGS4's ending, but it also brings me back in time throughout the entire series. It envokes thoughts about my father, and his father...etc. It's serious stuff.

These are just two of my favorites. I have tons more, but I'll just use these two for now, so as to kick off the thread.

Nice two songs you picked there Chris, but this Mantis song is the better song, and the best single piece I've heard out of my experience with the whole series, outside the license songs and themes.

This is my personal beloved track on any music in a video game to date: Sonic The Hedgehog 2: Wing Fortress . Sky chase Zone is very close along with that. Sonic The Hedgehog's entire music from the first to knuckles is still damn good to even today.

Along with Metal Gear Solid and Sonic mentioned, I think Half Life will have to be the third franchise to deserve to be mentioned for its music. Its ambient music is nothing but perfect.

Military Precision , Eletric Gutair and Adrenaline horror. Some fine picks from the first game of so many excellent pieces (Half Life 2 and the following episodes are still the same quality).

Here's another truly great song from the MGS series, a lesser-known song from Portable Ops called "Gene":
As promised, the soundtrack to Portable Ops. Merry Christmas. :)

Gene was a very good character, and his speech before the final fight in MPO was legendary. Too bad the rest of the game didn't match.

This song is something I'd hear at a rave, not an eerie boss fight with an expert in psychokinesis and telepathy who wore a creepy gas mask.

Surprised no one has mentioned Donkey Kong Contries tracks:

          - DKC: Aquatic Ambience http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D65TT5Ieb4M
          - DKC2: Bramble Blast http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=73n7HTcmb5g

Then Silent Hill 1 and 2 have a lot of good tracks, especially 2 more so.

My list could really go on for ages.

I know, mine too. That's why I'm trying to pace myself in between posts. So many great songs out there.

I think Twin Snakes still does very well to the original game, outside a few odd parts (certain cut scenes), and delivered the feeling I had with the original game. It was a good job on a remake than what could of happened.

Let's add another good pick: Skies of arcadia!

EDIT: This thread is going to be a long one since I've got many memoriable musical tracks from great games in my head that should be on this list.

Theres nothing iconic about MGS soundtrack. It was before Gregson-Williams techno-orchestral epic mixes and to be honest MGS tracks are seriously bland. TTS soundtrack on the other hand offer a perfect mix between ambience and dynamic, with very good transition. Something which has since been topped only by newer MGS titles, aswell as SWAT4 and Splinter Cell: Double Agent (which is the best in actual transitions between ambient, stress and dynamic).

There are a number of topics like these, so I wont list my TOP 10, but I can do something else-

I love my videogame music. Most are ambient tracks, but theres a lot of dynamic ones aswell. My favourite is HL1 soundtrack, and amusingly, out of all RE tracks, I think "Serenity" (RE4 save room music) is one of the best in the series, and definitely the best save room track.

I listen to A LOT of video game music on my iPod, but most of it is either from various Final Fantasies or Resident Evils. I think out of the Final Fantasies, Final Fantasy VIII probably had the best soundtrack. I loved the various incarnations of the Fithos Lusec Wecos Vinosec they had throughout the game, and CODE: Veronica is probably the best out of the Resident Evils. Any song attached to an Ashford is automatically awesome in my book.

                  Some of my favorites:

                  Murderous Eyes
This is by far my favorite; I love the mix of the organ and the vocals. Plus, I've always found the Wesker/Alexia battle to be one of the best in the series.

                  The Extreme
I generally go for the Final Fantasy Boss Battle music; it's typically some of the best songs in the game. One-Winged Angel being my case and point here. Everyone seems to love that one. Anyway, I just like how again this mixes the Fithos Lusec Wecos Vinosec theme, but has a touch of creepiness to it.

                  Street
This one is from one of Squaresoft's lesser known games, Einhander. I've always liked this one because it fit the game perfectly, and it just sounds like something out of Blade Runner or one of those other futuristic type movies.

                  Monster Party Level 3
I've always just enjoyed the simplicity of some NES games, and always loved the tune in this level. I hate this game, mind you, but this song was always one of my favorites.

Those have always been two of my favorites from the Silent Hill series too.

I'd be remiss if I didn't mention this gem from MGS2:
                        Fortune's Theme - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5hkqqZx2rTE

The solo saxophone is beautiful. The sad overtone of the whole song really matches well with Fortune's character.

That track brings back so many memories. The orchestral version is really nice too.

Some other OST's that caught my attention:

                          Mirror's Edge - Still Alive

                          Heavy Rain - Intro

                          Tekken 3 - Julia Chang

                            YouTube video:
The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask - Opening (Clocktown theme).

                            YouTube video:
The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask - Astral observatory.

Both of the above are orchestations of the original songs, and sound absolutely fantastic.

                            YouTube video:

                            Starcraft - Terran 1.
The only rule my friends and I obey when we play starcraft is that if you're terran, you MUST turn the music up as loud as you can.

                            YouTube video:

                            Dr Mario - Fever
