So at E3 Sony announced Playstation Plus which is a membership on PSN which cost money ($50 full year, $17 3 months). Standard PSN is still free but PSN+ cost money but you get early access to demo's, beta's and what not.

If you have been paying attention to all of the news coming out of E3, you probably heard that we introduced a new subscription service called PlayStation Plus, which will be available on June 29.
PlayStation Plus is a service that lives on top of the current PlayStation Network. So, while users will continue to have free access to PlayStation Network’s unmatched and ever-growing suite of new and exclusive content, services, and community focused tools – just as they do today – PlayStation Plus subscribers will gain access to an exclusive set of features and content designed specifically for gamers.
When you subscribe to PlayStation Plus, you’ll get free games and DLC (pretty sweet), frequent discounts on PlayStation Store, early invitations to select betas of popular games, and free monthly episodes of Qore – our high-definition, interactive gaming lifestyle show. You’ll also enjoy new functionality such as Full Game Trial where you can “try before you buy” – play a Blu-ray or PSN game for up to one hour and then you can buy the game, download it and keep your progress and trophies. Another cool feature is Automatic Downloads that will push select demos, game related videos, patches and firmware updates to your PS3 so you don’t have to think about it. Total it up and you’ll get hundreds of dollars of value through the year with exclusive digital content from both our World Wide Studios Group and our publishing partners. And every month we’ll be adding new content and continually adding new features, making PlayStation Plus an incredible value, time saver and ticket to front-of-the-line access.
At launch, PlayStation Plus will offer subscribers the full PlayStation Network game, WipEout HD, full game trial of inFAMOUS, PSP minis and PS One Classics such as Fieldrunners, Age of Zombies and Rally Cross, as well as premium avatars, themes and DLC levels and map packs. Additionally, subscribers will always have access to their virtual library of free games for as long as they keep their PlayStation Plus subscription. In all, subscribers will get an unprecedented amount of value, access and convenience and, in the first month alone, will receive more than $50 worth of content.
PlayStation Plus will be available for a yearly fee of $49.99. We are also running a “limited time offer” giving subscribers 3 free bonus months for signing up for a yearly subscription – so those who
sign up now will get 15-months of PlayStation Plus. Consumers also have the option to subscribe for 3 months for $17.99.
You can sign up on the PlayStation Store or learn more about the exclusive features at us.playstation.com.
Unfortunetly there STILL isn't cross game chat like what the 360 has but we'll have it someday. Anyways anyone here that has a PS3 gonna get Playstation +? Give your opinions on it here.

I think it's a good deal and all and I'll be getting it on the 29th when it comes out but I wish it had party chat .

For starters, funny to see Sony actually even dare to step into the circle of charging money for their "services" and stuff...

The part about getting "free" stuff sounds nice (Though, technically; free = you paid for something you didn't pick yourself. Though, I must say, some of the Deals of the Week on LIVE have been amazingly great offers. So cross your fingers, you might be in for some good "members only" treats, I suppose.)

Anyway, I better not be seeing anyone of the guys who've been nagging about Xbox LIVE costing money coming in here to praise this

Additionally, subscribers will always have access to their virtual library of free games for as long as they keep their PlayStation Plus subscription.
That sounds pretty... cruel. So there's gonna be a PLUS ONLY library of content? (Which I assume will be "free" for PLUS users, but unavailable or pay-per-item for regulars?)

It's a ridiculously good deal, and it pisses all over X-Box Live.

When everything is considered, it is a pretty good deal, but I'm already paying $50 a year for Xbox Live. I'll probably not be getting this right away, but if there are some sweet 'free' PSN+ games coming out in the future, I guess I'll consider it. It all depends on how I'm doing financially.

Especially funny because in 2006 they laughed at the idea that Nintendo could offer it's service for free and even published a chart where they claimed that it would not last for more than 6 months:

It wasn't until this year that Miyamoto (not Nintendo) mentioned the issue of charging users for extra content. However, none of that is actually happening since Miyamoto said "With these core business strategies, I think we are less active than we should be".

Anyway, Sony is now in the position where they charge their user base for extra content. Problem is, that this business model (charging users for online services) might be employed with their next console from the very beginning.
Stuff to remember: Avoid forums if you're having a bad day.

no thanks. i don't really feel the need to pay just to have early access to demos or free games. hell, you take account all the costs of the free games they listed for you, it would come out less than the actual yearly fee. hell, i don't even know why i still pay for xbox live, when games for windows live is free anyways, despite its less amount of features.

Think before you type. Of course one month's free bunch of games would be cheaper seperately. But what about the second month? Then the third month? Etc etc. That's when it works out cheaper to subscribe yearly.

No chance, as I don't multiplayer, there is no way im paying for it, as I also don't pay for xbox live. But for ppl that do use it im sure its great.

I hate the idea of playing to play.

                    ^Ditto, DONNIemo.
I don't usually play online either and it appears to be aimed towards that. Especially if you loose things you previously could play, once your subscription expires. Sounds like you will have to be signed into the PSN network to use the stuff.
                    F**K THAT!!!

I presume they will eventually introduce this into PAL territories too.

It'll need some serious incentives to make me part with my cash. I don't play mutliplayer on any console and only very rarely on the PC.

But it doesn't have anything to do with multiplayer other than (inevitably) the odd beta every few months?

True. I always assume these things have added multiplayer stuffs. Still, unless it has some exclusives I really want...

I think Sony have been pretty clever in that respect. They know they'd have lost a lot of browny points if they'd have started charging for online, but at the same they would've felt they were losing revenue somewhere.
