Ever had an original idea for a video game? Story/plot/gameplay mechanics? Talk about it!
Here's an idea that I just got out of nowhere. It's inspired by this song:
"Ghosts N Stuff" by deadmau5:
It is PIVOTAL that you listen to this song while you read my pitch. I think (hope) you'll understand where I'm coming from.
This song just blows my mind, and all I can think about right now is how I wanna take 15 years to develop a masterpiece known as "Ghosts N Stuff."
I have a bunch of ideas flowing through my veins right now, I'm bugging out. Okay, here's the premise:
The main character is a paranormal detective and a complete, raging drug addict. You can control everything he does EXCEPT when he decides to take drugs, because the idea is that it's a disease that he has no control over. The whole game will be heavily drug-influenced. You won't know what's real or what's fake. Hallucinations. Mind-blowing visions. Sounds and noises coming from everywhere. Ghosts and stuff.
He'll be equipped lightly with a flashlight and maybe a handgun that he can pick up later(think Alan Wake, but not as straightforward) to use against what he 'thinks' or what maybe truly is an invasive/evil force/person. It's up to YOU to decide, and live with the consequences. And that's the key sticking point in the gameplay mechanics. Maybe I can get David Cage to produce this game with me.
Think Heavy Rain/Indigo Prophecy on drugs. Literally.
As you go on investigations(think sort of like Michael J. Fox in the movie "The Frighteners" but not as comedic), you have to decide what is real(ghosts and stuff) and what is fake(hallucinations and drugs and stuff). It'll be sort of like a detective mystery game. He'll have a girlfriend who he's on-again off-again with and is a huge factor in his hallucinations(sort of like from the movie Inception, but not as annoying). I also have INCREDIBLE ideas for the ending/climax of the game, but I can't tell you all because it will spoil everything.
Maybe he'll be hallucinating on an investigation, tripping REALLY hard, he'll be seeing all kinds of bright colors and a dark, angry figure will appear and come towards him. You'll have to choose quickly whether or not to engage them(think Resident Evil 3's decision sequences when facing Nemesis, only a lot faster and edgier). It could be a malevolent force, or it could be a homeless guy. You just can't tell because the drugs have ruined his brain to a point that he can't decipher reality from everything else.
Paranoia will play a key part in this as well. Since he's a paranormal investigator who's also on drugs, every single noise he hears will heighten his senses and alertness. Maybe a car will drive by in the distance and his eyes will widen and he'll turn around to see what it was, only to realize it's nothing, then turn around quickly to be faced with something horrifying. Survival horror with the 'survival' part being all mental.
There will obviously be multiple endings. I also know that this is flawed, so if you have any suggestions/comments, let me know.
The point is, games are becoming as acceptable a piece of media as movies...so why cant games push the envelope more? There are movies all about drugs, why not a game about them? It's such an interesting topic because it's amazing to expand your mind on them, but dangerous for what they can do to your body/brain/well-being. It's a topic that should be expanded upon more.
So? What are your thoughts?
