  • Shadows of the DAMNED // EA + Mikami + Suda + Yamaoka

This much anticipated horror title was first announced back in 2008 and finally publisher EA has hinted that the game will be revealed at this year's Tokyo Game Show.
EA has promised gamers No More Heroes creator Goichi Suda has been granted the freedom to make his upcoming untitled ho…

The game is produced by the legendary Shinji Mikami, directed by Suda51 and composed by Akira Yamoka.

There are going my strange rumors about what'll be shown at EA's pre-TGS show.

EA says they'll show "new" stuff (by new, they mean previously unseen, I suppose. So not necessarily unannounced stuff.)

Wishful thinking and rumors leans on stuff like:

Rock Band Japan (MIA since its announcement w/AQ Interactive)
Multiplatform Horror Title (The Mikami/Suda51 + now also Yamaoka title)
Mirror's Edge sequel (If they relaunch this, they better be clever about their marketing.)
    *other unannounced stuff*

I stand by my comment that this will either be so awesome it'll burn everyone who touches it, or fall so far into failure that picking it up will give you frostbite. So either way, we're gonna need gloves.

I hope EA's flash license has expired if that happens.

Loved the first game and i've been hoping for a sequel ever since the first game. I would like to see some improvements though such as a variety in game play perhaps, more interesting enviroments to free run over etc.
Also the sequel needs another kick ass theme like the first game

Check out the music video for Mirror's Edge! The song, "Still Alive" is sung by Swedish pop star Lisa Miskovsky, who is a major gaming aficionado herself.

            Such a brilliant song.

If they made Mirrors Edge 2 i'd like them to do a little bit more play testing and tweaking so it doesn't make me sick every time i play it. Never have i felt sick playing a game before, i guess that says something for the realism factor of it, but it's not so good if it prevents me from actually enjoying the game.

Anyway, i had no idea Yamaoka was attached to this game, that just makes me more excited for it! I'm hoping it'll be the one shown.

As long as EA lets them to their magic, this should end well.

I hope they give them a big budget. I want to see what Suda 51 can do working with almost unlimited resources.

Glad to hear something is actually coming of this, I'd begun to believe that the game had become a casualty of Suda's other efforts not selling well, but EA seems to see the clear potential of sales if the game is marketed well and correctly. Here's hoping.

I don't think that was the reason for the lack of info on that game. None of Suda 51's previous efforts were as big as a hit as his NMH series (unless you include Super Smash Bros. Brawl). The fact that he's a "niche developer" that makes arthouse games explains why Suda 51's games have never sold by the bucketloads. Basically, he makes critically acclaimed games that don't sell like crazy. And I believe EA knew this well.

The lack of info on this game was probably due to it being kept secret. Suda 51 always mentioned that whenever he was asked about it.

^ Normally thats what I would have understood, and you don't need to explain Suda's appeal to me... I've been following his work since he was at Human.

It's more that the thing has been listed as a development title for quite a while and no more official comments had been made about the potential of it's release since Akira joined the staff... which was before NMH2 released and imploded sales wise, and EA is very very fickle over spending money on something they don't think will sell.

The fact they're releasing a statement blaming his sales more on mismarketing and the fact they're committed shows exactly my point, they are reassuring the people they think they have a product to sell here.

Nope, haven't played the first one either. Does it have the same motion sickness effect? I've heard a few people mention the same kind of effect with the new 3D things they're trialing. I'm all for involving the player, but when its a nauseating experience i'd rather be left out

I dunno about that.... I still think that EA knew very well that Suda 51 games don't sell too well with mainstream gamers. I mean, what exactly was there to even make them think otherwise?

Anyway, NMH games are "slow burn" titles that take their time to sell on the Wii. Heck, the port of NMH1 on the PS3 and 360 didn't exactly sell a lot. NMH2 sold better in it's first week than the port did (even if you combined the sales numbers of the PS3,360 versions of NMH1).

If EA didn't know that Suda 51's games don't sell like crazy right out of the gate, then they're more clueless than I thought.

However, I still don't believe any of that had any influence on why this new game was kept under the radar for so long. I think it was more because Mikami and Suda himself were quite busy during all that time. Not only with their individual projects, but also with this game (at some capacity).

You've got me wrong here... my comment about EA has nothing to do with them knowing or not knowing, it's more to do with how EA has reacted about burning cash with development in the past. If they took him on board knowing he makes different and interesting games but they don't sell, that's one thing. And they want to address it by marketing it differently. But I think it's more about perception here.

They know that people know Suda's titles don't sell so well, so they expected that a lot of people will be wondering at this stage if their planned game was still going ahead in the public's eye still. So here they are making this statement to say "We know that everyone knows Suda's titles don't sell well, but we're committed to not only making this game but making it sell." For me, that's a lot of reassurance that had been missing up until this point.

I don't doubt other projects have been keeping all of the developers busy and away from this and that's contributed to mostly of this quiet period as you say, but to me it was reassurance in the project. At the end of the day EA is the one funding the whole thing and they could have easily pulled the plug without any public acknowledgment - it's happened many times before.
