What's so puzzling about it? Honest curiosity here.

Outside of Mass Effect 2, I have to disagree. God of War III was a major disappointment for me, Heavy Rain wasn't worth much more than a single playthrough, Alan Wake was decent at best, Splinter Cell Conviction was irritatingly short, Red Dead Redemption was pretty much Grand Theft Horse as Yahtzee put it, and Bioshock 2 was irrelevant compared to the original.

I don't disagree that a lot of potentially good titles came out this year compared to others, but I didn't find most of them to be all that great themselves, making this IMO not a very good gaming year...at least for me.

Very well said, I agree totally.

And yes Mass Effect 2 was the only game that made me happy wow I thought it was last year? time flys.

      • So what's the word on the 4th Capcom title at TGS?

        • It was Capcom's announcement of a 360 Steel Battalion Kinect title.

          • While I for one wasn't expecting Capcom to reveal RE6 (just look at all the DMC5 rumours that turned out to be just that - rumours), I was at least expecting more news on revelations.

not 1 good game was announced so fare at TGS from any company.
Actually, there're quite a handful of titles that are interesting, but only to the Japanese. This is a Jpn game event, not E3.

              • And it's for that reason, xfactor, that many would say that Japanese gaming is on the decline. They refuse to do anything but cater to niche audiences and as such limit their potential revenue and call into question the future of the industry in their country.

Sure, we'll probably still see Pokemon in the years to come because it's still pretty successful over here, but that's about it.

                  Was hoping you'd ask.

Basically, you complain about quantity over quality (despite multiple titles being made by multiple developers and not all in the same kitchen), then say you prefer what's pretty much factually proven to be the prime sample of a genre that's grown stale thanks to "quantity over quality."

Going by the titles you mention, you've only really mentioned the "big" stuff. Not gonna say it's the only stuff you've tried amongst this year spectacular releases, but it makes me wonder if you pretty much only go where the publishers have invested their marketing money. 1:0 to marketing, I suppose.

So far this year, as a gamer, after quite some time of really only so-so-ish purchases, I feel like I'm finally hitting the peak of the generation or something (not to mention how excited I am for some of the stuff that's set to come out in the future, both near and distant).

If you don't try to expand the niche market, you will end up with the "quantity over quality" issue. Where everyone's making the very same game for "everyone." But, yes, it's true that Japanese developers are living in some weirdo past and that a lot of developers are moaning about weird declines in the market... no clue what they're onto. They're probably just too busy "expanding" to please their investors, but forgetting to actually make games while they're at it. (Nothing's better than a company that makes itself a huge office of paper pushers, when they really don't need it and can't really afford it either.)

Nintendo is not part of TGS, they'll show it on the 29th of this month in a Nintendo event.

Yeah, I realized what you meant shortly after I posted that. Felt like a dope after I reread it. Still, what I basically meant was that even the West's fascination with FPS is a better path than the East's with turn-based RPGs and Beat 'Em Ups. I've never played a bad FPS, even the most formulaic ones, while I can't stand most of the aforementioned JRPGs and beat 'em ups (usually featuring some sort of perversion in the form of school girl attired fighters, it seems).

You're absolutely right: I do tend to stick to the "big" stuff because of either how they're marketed or because of their review scores. There is solid reasoning in this: attempts to pick outlandish choices usually result in getting burned. There is a reason games like The Grudge and Vampire Rain don't do so well and I had the misfortune to find out just how bad they could be. Other games in this category of suckage (at least in my opinion): Fatal Frame, Siren, Call of Juarez and Call of Juarez: BiB, Red Steel, etc.

Typically for me, if a game doesn't have an average review score of 80%, it's probably not worth playing and spending money on. There are a few exceptions to this rule: I enjoyed Obscure: The Aftermath despite its terrible story and wonky controls. Similarly, I feel Bully is the best Rockstar game because it feels like it has a heart and isn't just going through the motions.

It's just my way of deciding what to play.

                        That's rather ignorant.

                          So's that comment.

But go on, tell me some spectacular games with less than an 80% average.
