I don't mind it so much when it's the intro for a game or something but when it's got no part in the game i just don't see the point, i'd rather see one new in-game screenshot than a CGI trailer that won't be part of the game.
It looks like a good game but it just isn't a Tomb Raider game, so unnecessary to do this. Still with a Fall 2012 release date they could always scrap it or just make it it's own IP, and fire that shitty voice actress too. I can hope can't i?
Gritty video game reboots are the worst thing for franchises, name one that was successful. They just rebooted the series a few years ago and every review said that the series was finally back on track so why the hell are they completely derailing it again? It's too dark, too gritty, it's not Lara, it's not Tomb Raider, it's a grittier Uncharted with a female lead and it should have been it's own IP because this would have been a rather promising start. For Tomb Raider it's the death of the series and after 15 years of building a solid fan-base suddenly saying "Oh screw what you knew and grew up with, we're totally changing it and going in a random direction just cause we can" It's RE4 all over again.
I love it when people say it's not Lara or Tomb Raider like there is some kinda check list the developers have to abide by. I would think fans of the series would excited for some creativity, the only thing that has kept this series going is it's "icon status" and tits and ass. The only great game in the last decade involving Lara Croft wasn't even a Tomb Raider.
If you want the same terrible controls, horrific combat, bland story, and bimbo protagonist then go play Underworld.
