And this right here is why they're doing it, to appeal to people who never liked the series in the first place. This is why every gritty reboot fails, it tries to appeal to the people who liked nothing about the series originally but what developers never realise is by doing this they're turning off the already existing fan-base and it just leads to a big mess and the only way to redeem it is by yet more reboots.

I've seen a few comments on the same mark as mine although whenever i go there now though i don't bother much trying to look at anything about the new game, too many comments in too many threads all saying pretty much nothing interesting. Maybe because i've been playing this series since the release day of the first one (before if you count demos) all those years ago i just don't/can't go with this, maybe it is very much a case of "new generation appeal only", but i have a feeling when gameplay starts coming up and when the game finally hits everyone will wonder what the point is. Then a few years after when they're forced to reboot again everyone will start losing interest on mass.

That is a good point, i thought the entire point of TR games was treasure hunting too, it's in the title and all, something else they seem to have forgotten this time. I compare it to UC because people call that a gritty more realistic TR, this game just seems to be saying "Oh yeah? Well now we're grittier!"

Uncharted gritty? Did those people even play it lol the old TR games and even AoD are grittier than any Uncharted game. Sure TR is a treasure hunting game but this is an origins story she wasn't hard as rock from the get-go and I'm looking forward to it Lara became so one dimensional the past few games"Admit it, you're going to miss this ass" - Chloe Frazer

I guess it was the male lead that made it seem grittier to most. You just brought up another major problem i have with this "reboot", they spent the last 3 games rebooting the origin of Lara story, that's all those Legend-Anniversary-Underworld was about, her beginnings. Now just as we might set into a future story they start all over again.
I will say this of the reboot though, Toby Gard being gone is a good thing in my opinion.Last edited by rewak; 06-04-2011, 08:01 AM.

Not really Underworld wrapped up what was always the major underlying story of the series which was pretty much trying to understand her father's work in a way the last three games set up their origin and ended it well with Underworld from a story standpoint there was nowhere to go"Admit it, you're going to miss this ass" - Chloe Frazer

That's what i'm saying, the last 3 games were the story arc explaining Lara's beginnings in why she chose the path she did and how she became who she is (being lost in the mountains at a young age and losing her mother and also detailing her first major exploration in Anniversary where she grew and changed as a person). From there it could have gone anywhere anyway, a future story, one that hasn't been told or hinted at, just making this reboot even more unnecessary. They had a free path, they could have made this story without it being a complete restart of the series with a few little tweaks.

Well the reboot itself to me isn't really for the story it's more for the character only Lara was like some invincible fembot before and no matter what new story they could have brought she'd just grow increasingly more bland. Humanizing Lara will bring out more facets to her character a more relatable person. That's just me though I like a change and felt Lara was getting too stale"Admit it, you're going to miss this ass" - Chloe Frazer

I love the fact that they are giving us a Lara who is inexperienced, but like she said in the trailer, she wants to make her mark through adventure, but she's kind of thrown into something she wasn't at all expecting, and now she has to adapt and survive. It actually feels like a real origin story, the beginning of something.
It seems the whole grittier reboot thing is becoming popular these days, and the Tomb Raider series is something I think will benefit from it. This game could do for the TR series that Batman Begins did for the Batman series.

This is new IP material, they are taking names and nothing else from what has existed so far.

They could have rebooted the gameplay and style without retconning the series, there are still story points not finished from the L/A/U trilogy and it seems we will now never see them. Likewise Lara has already had origin stories and this just craps over them.

This TR is like if after RECV they decided to screw the unanswered story points and retcon RE1,2,3 and CV out of existance.Last edited by Dracarys; 06-05-2011, 08:42 PM.Beanovsky Durst - "They are not pervs. They are japanese."
